ANTIQUE MERIDEN BRITANNIA B CO QUADRUPLE SILVERPLATE CUP WASTE BOWL SILVER PLATE
You are bidding on an antique Aesthetic Era Quadruple Silverplate Cup or Waste Bowl made by Meriden Brittania Company. At first I thought this was a cup. But after further research, I found that it could also be considered a waste bowl. The cup/waste bowl has a satin finish with a lovely bright-cut engraving of a vine bearing leaves and berries encircling the cup. The interior of the cup/waste bowl has a gold wash. Contrasting beautifully with the silver plate. The bottom bears a Scale within a Circle mark and reads. Meriden B Co. Another circle reads, Quadruple Plate" above the number"026. The Meriden Brittania Co. produced beautiful silverplate objects during the Aesthetic Era. Naturalistic themes were popular during this time which ran from the mid-1800's until early 1900. Antique silver plate from this era was most commonly ... moremarked"Quadruple Plate" denoting that 4 layers of silver plate were used on the piece. The term"Quadruple Plate" was rarely used after 1900. The cup/waste bowl bears normal and expected surface marks from age and use. Especially on the interior, along with a couple of small scratches. There is also some light loss of plating in spots. The bottom of the piece does bear some scratches and surface marks from use. The cup/waste bowl measures 2 3/4" in height and 3 1/2" across the mouth. This is a very nice antique Quadruple Silverplate Cup/Waste Bowl from the Meriden Brittania Co. The sugar bowl is done in the desirable Assyrian Head pattern which was first produced in 1887. The sugar bowl has a beautiful band of raised decoration around the middle depicting the heads of classical figures interspersed with fancy flowers. Scrolls and leaves. The sugar bowl is marked on the underside with Meriden B. Company. Quadruple Plate. I believe Rogers Brothers also made this exact pattern, although this piece is stamped by Meridian Britannia Company. These companies were interrelated. The sugar bowl is in great condition overall. CT, silver plated creamer with a figural bust of a woman on the handle and a bearded man or Viking bust on each of the four feet. Hallmarked Meriden B. Company on the bottom with the number 1887 and a patent date of Oct. 22. 1879. This wonderful old footed creamer is very ornate. It has a figural bust of a woman on the handle(perhaps Harriet Beecher Stowe) and a figural bust of a bearded man or Viking on each of the feet. Both sides of the creamer are incised with a floral cartouche. The creamer is tarnished. Has plate loss and the interior bottom has pitting. No dents or dings and no monogram. ANTIQUE CREAMER AND SUGAR BOWL SET BY MERIDEN BRITANNIA SILVERPLATE This very old set appears to be silverplate over copper. Produced in the mid 1800s. This was a technique used by the Meriden Company to utilize their early skills with metal alloys, and add silver coatings to those designs. The sugar bowl has the number V60103 scratched inside the lid, and the Meriden B hallmark on the bottom. The plating on the sugar bowl is in good condition. The creamer shows signs of much use. The plating is partially worn off around the upper lip, and on its handle showing the copper base. The plating on the bowl part shows what appears to be staining, but is probably the copper base showing through. The base of the creamer has the numbers 4261 and V60103, plus the Merioden B hallmark. There is some silverplate loss and one of the bird handles is missing a wing; however. There are no dents in either piece. Both pieces are in the shape of an acorn and have bird handles. The sugar bowl and lid is 5 3/8" in height. It has a bug finial on top of the lid. The creamer measures 4 3/4" to top of bird on handle. Antique Meriden Britannia Company Sugar Bowl Pattern#1881 Silver Plate engraved December 25. 1872 on one side and engraved with the initials"S.M. on the other side. The dimensions are approximately 7-1/4 inches tall by 7-1/4 inches wide. What an interesting piece, ready for restoration. The silverplating is shiny in some areas and still tarnished in spots. Most likely this sugar bowl would have been one piece of the tea set that also once included the tea server, creamer and waste bowl. I'm not certain if the bowl is mis-shaped at the rim or if it was made this way. The lid only fits on one way. If this piece could talk, oh. the stories it could tell!
