Vintage Middletown Plate Co. Quadruple Silver Plate Sugar Bowl w/Flowers #1421
Up for bid is a sugar bowl made by the Middletown Plate Company. It is quadrupled silver plated. It is stamped on the bottom with"Middletown Plate Co. Quadrupleplate" with a balance scale in the middle. On the bottom is the number 1421 and states"Hard White Metal" and the letters"B.C. CILT" photos 10 and 11) My research shows that the Middletown Plate Company with this stamp was founded in 1864 in Middletown. CT. Also, I wanted to know what"quadrupleplate" was, and what I found out is quadruple silver plate hollowware was some of the highest quality made during the later part of the 19th century. Within the silversmith and silver manufacturing industry. Items marked"Standard" silver plate indictated that 2 troy ounces of pure silver were used to silver electroplate 144 spoons, but"Quadruple" ... moresilverplate used 8 troy ounces of silver to plate the same 144 spoons. Quadruple silver plate items are NOT plated four times, nor do they have four times as much silver as any other hollowware item. Abe Silverman's website) This sugar bowl does not come with a lid. I acquired it without one. It is not in perfect condition. It shows some wear on the bottom and some patina wear on the outside. It really makes for a beautiful vintage piece. The front and back is etched with daisy flowers and leaves. The handles have beautiful scroll markings. The measurements are as follows: The sugar bowl measures 6 1/2" handle to handle. And 4" without handles Opening is 2 3/4" across Stands 4" tall to the opening. Up for sale is the great silverplated sugar bowl by Middletown Plate Co. Middletown CT. Business started in 1884. Taken over in 1899 by International Silver Co. The sugar bowl is 7" high with a base of 3" and is 5 1/8" wide. It is in excellent shape. No dings or plate loss that I can see. It has a beaded rim and base. It has a nice design on front and back. Very good condition covered cream pitcher/syrup dispenser or display piece. It has a very nice swirl design on the bottom of the pitcher and around the edge of the saucer. It has the silver patina look but it would shine up if you desired. Comes with the bottom plate to sit the little pitcher on. On the bottom of the pitcher is Middletown Plate Quadruple Plate around some weigh scales. Also#581 Hard White Metal. The saucer is marked on the bottom#581. shabby. Charming large sugar bowl from the late 1800's by"Middletown Plate Co. Tripleplate" silverplate with the dark finish that isn't designed to be polished brightly- nice urn shape with decorative handles topped with scrolled leaves, grape leaf stems engraved front& back with a"C" monogram on the front- a dozen little brackets around the rim for spoons(five are broken off. The rest are quite bent) the brackets are softer metal like pewter- 6-5/8" tall to the rim. Opening is 3-3/4" overall diameter. Including handles is 7" bowl is approximately 4-1/2" in diameter- sits flat. No repairs, interior worn from use- perfect for a prim floral arrangement, implement organizer or display piece- no holes. Antique Middletown Plate Co. 2016 silverplate sugar bowl with lid. 9" tall. Marked"MIDDLETOWN PLATE CO QUADRUPLE PLATE HARD WHITE METAL 2016" on the bottom. Condition is good. The lid doesn't fit all that well; it looks like the sugar bowl could use just a tiny bit of tweaking to make the lid fit properly. The bottom of the interior of the sugar bowl shows some pitting to the metal. Other than that I don't see any obvious damage. But there is heavy tarnishing and normal wear, nicks, etc. from age, handling and use. this is a really old set of Middletown Plate company USA set of sugar and creamer. the silverplate is worn off in many areas- see scanned pics closely. Each measures 4" in height. Both are marked on reverse with Middletown Plate the logo of Middletown USA and LII and 3~ Beautiful. Delicate hobnail edge and sturdy still. The issue is the worn silverplate. The company manufactured silver plate hollowware out of Middletown Ct from 1864 until they merged with International Silver Plate Company in 1898 though some of the dies were used until 1912. The creamer stands 6 inches tall. The silver plate is in the traditional silver plate finish and the"Butler Finish" used to replicate years of polishing by a butler giving the cream pitcher a softer silver plate finish. There are no monograms or dents and the silver plate is in good condition. The inside is clean and usable. We also have the matching tea pot on auction this week and do combine shipping. Middletown Plate Co. Silverplate Creamer with Attached Lid
Antique silverplate lidded creamer- etched floral design with cute little birds on each side- lid is hinged and the hinge works freely and is tight/no wobble- made by Middletown Plate Co. marked Quadruple Plate- the number 0440 is on the bottom. Which I assume is a pattern number- marking also says Hard White Metal and what looks like B C below that- 5" wide from tip of spout to back of handle- 3 5/8" high/to top of lid decoration- approx. 3 1/2" wide- weighs 9.2 oz. I have not polished the creamer as I like silver-plate better when it shows it's age. There is pitting inside/see picture. There is also an area on the edge of the lid(see the last picture- upper left) where the lid edge is flattened a little- area is about 1/2" long. The little research I've done shows that the Middletown Plate Co. started in 1864 ... moreand was incorporated into the International Silver Co. in 1899. With some still being made until 1921. Therefore, I figure this piece is late 1800's to early 1900's. I am not an antiques dealer- I'm just a person who loves the old silverplate pieces and sometimes I have too many! I think they are beautiful pieces of history and I actually use many of them. I love the connection of using something that someone else used 100 years or more ago. That being said. Please understand that my description is made to the best of my limited knowledge of what I'm selling- and what I'm seeing in front of me. Selling a beautifully aged sugar bowl from Middletown Plate Co. The trademark on the bottom(see Photo) Middletown Plate Co. Quadruple Plate" circling scales places the date between 1864-1899. There is no Lid. It appears that one was originally with this piece. I found this in an estate sale awhile back and purchased it because it looks really different. There is some wear on the banded pattern which is slight considering its age. Very interesting research on this piece and it is very rare to find an exact match. They stand about 3 3/4 inches tall. The sugar piece has no lid. The surface is a dark gray color. Some plating loss is evident as you can see in the pics. So this artistic creamer& sugar bowl was made prior to 1899. They are made of Brittannia or"Hard White Metal" has the look of pewter. The design is very artistic with a curvy geometric flourish, Victorian in era but would blend well with Arts& Crafts. The creamer has a double-spout& would pour from either side, the sugar bowl is un-lidded& appears very slightly darker, could probably polish to a higher shine(I did not try) Creamer measures 3-3/4" high& about 2-1/2" in diameter. Sugar is 3-1/3" high& 3" in diameter, 5-1/4" handle to handle. The creamer ha s 2 very tiny dents but is not really visible when in ... moreuse. There are no other dings or dents, no loss of finish, a truly artistic set of antique metalware.
