Exquisite Treasures Exquisite Treasures ANTIQUE RARE 100+ YEARS OLD MANNING BOWMAN& CO SILVERPLATED SUGAR BOWL E.B. Manning. Middletown, Connecticut was a britannia ware maker from 1850-1875. Robert Bowman was born in Liverpool, England in 1829 and came to this country as a boy. He learned his trade in Middletown, Connecticut and after working there a while entered the employ of Samuel Simpson(later of Simpson. Hall, Miller& Co. He also worked in Baltimore, Md. with Henry Bullard in the silverplating business. At the outbreak of the Civil War he went North again to Middletown and entered into partnership with E.B. Manning and Joseph H. Parsons. Thaddeus Manning and Manning. Bowman& Company were listed in the Connecticut Business Directory of 1866 as britannia ware manufacturers. The company founded in 1857 and incorporated in ... more1887. Company records do not show just when the manufacture of plated silver products began. But, they are listed in JC from 1896-1915 with trademarks for plated silver. One clue lies in the fact that they won an award at an exhibition of the American Institute of New York in 1869 for plated silverware. Their advertisement(Keystone August 1906) says. For over 40 years makers of the highest grade of wares in nickel and silverplate" Best known for their manufacture of electrical appliances. The Manning-Bowman Company is now a division of the McGraw-Edison Company, Boonville, Missouri. Meriden Britannia Co. was in control c. 1872 and after 1898 the International Silver Company owned more than 50% of the stock. Description This truly antique MANNING BOWMAN& CO SILVERPLATED SUGAR BOWL is a collectors dream. There are not many pieces of this company around and a sugar bowl like this one should definitely be part of any respectable private collection. The sugar bowl measures 4 1/4" in diameter(without handles) and has a total height of 3 1/2" The inside is gold plated. At the bottom it bears the following manufacturer's silvermark: MB MEANS BEST" in an oval.

This is a small creamer made by Manning and Bowman co that my Mother had. It needs to be cleaned. But I have done nothing to it. I do not know if my Mom ever used it I always saw it sitting in a glass cabinet in the kitchen. There are no dents and it looks to be in good condition. The bottom has the number 450 and N.S.W.M.MTS. along with the company name.

Here is a creamer manufactured by Manning. Bowman& Co. of Meriden, Connecticut, founded in 1857. This elegant creamer has rolled rims and bears an engraved heart shaped scroll design at its widest point. The handle bears an ornate leaf and floral design. The base of this piece is marked: MB Means B Best Trade Mark MANNING. BOWMAN& CO. MERIDEN, CONN. MADE IN USA. This creamer measures approximately 5" high. And has a rim diameter of about 3" At its widest point the creamer measures about 3 3/4" with a spout to handle length of about 5 3/4" In antique condition. Showing various degrees of tarnish, but with a lovely patina. It bears spots of wear and plate loss, especially on the creamer's spout. It is in good structural condition.
