Here's what I stated about it s condition: Metal overlay surfaces have been repainted and restored. Some scratches and scuffs marks on beautifully grained wood slats. Leather handle missing on left side. Flip up side locking latches both flip up into locking position. But only one catches to keep it lock closed and the other is missing its catch. Center locking latching closes in position but does not lock and there is no key. Interior lining shows foxing and staining and has some t ares due to great age. But smells clean with nice scent like cedar inside. Truly a rare beauty of extra large size that has great looks and craftsmanship on evident in these earlier era pieces of exceptional beauty. Ladies Saratoga Trunk" Otherwise known as a"Barrel Stave Top" or"Dome Top" ... moreThis style of trunk is quite often mistakenly referred to as a steamer trunk; steamer trunks are a maximum of 14" tall and flat. A bit rough. Someone removed the lock portion of the main latch. It is an unusual double latch design. The compartment lid inside has broken and been repaired. Corner wear, some surface rust and oxidation. Leather handles broke off and were replaced with some very heavy duty brass handles a long time ago. The brass handles appear to be quite old. One of the cast strap clamps is broken yet all there. There is some damage to the tin clad skin. Original lining is cracked and torn in places. It appears to be all original with the exception of the handles and has not been painted(painting these trunks takes away from their value significantly) I'm sure I'm missing something so please look at the photos carefully and ask questions! Item is available for preview with appointment. I personally would leave it an unrestored original yet it could be restored bringing its value up. This would make a great display piece in your store, business or home. It has a covered hat/ glove compartment in the lid. Hardwood slats. The inside of the lid has the 2 original color chromo-lithographs; one depicting a man pushing a wheelbarrow with a woman and 3 children inside and the other is a woman pushing her daughter on a swing with a smaller picture of what appears to be ice skaters. The information below gives you information about the company and vintage era about this ... morecedar chest. Cedar Chest by Ed. Roos Co. The Ed. Roos Co. manufactured quality cedar chests from about 1916 to 1951. Most of those years they were located in Forest Park. IL. They were very successful for a time and made a large quantity of cedar chests. Because of that they are not particularly scarce. They are, however, of very good quality and were manufactured in quite a few styles. The style and condition are the determining factors in value. The Art Deco"waterfall" style. It is. However, in better condition and would be worth about $200-$250. The"Roos Manufacturing Co. of Chicago was established in 1871 by Edward Roos(born in Germany in December 1848) Died in 1906. He had several children including Otto(born 1877) and Edward(born 1880) Otto took over the Roos Manufacturing Company when his father died in 1906. They did manufacture cedar chests, but it is unclear when they started. The business began making curtain rods and later wooden boxes. They used a rooster in several variations in some of their logos. The"Ed Roos Company of Forest Park" started in Chicago as the Roos Cedar Chest Company in 1916. And also manufactured cedar chests, but it is a different company. They used a tree(presumably a cedar tree) in a circle as their logo. There are also other logos without the tree, and one with a heart for their"Sweetheart" chests. They also used a variety of paper and cardboard labels. It was started by Otto's brother. Edward. The company moved to Forest Park, IL in 1918 and changed its name to the Ed Roos Company of Forest Park In the 1920 federal census. Otto Roos is listed as President of a wooden wares business. So it is clear that the original Roos Manufacturing Company was still at work in 1920, after Ed Roos opened up shop in 1918 in Forest Park. The hardware ... moreis gorgeous! The shape of the trunk is great! At first glance. It looks like a gold painted textured tin exterior with black hardware. Upon closer examination, it looks like the trunk is wood covered with textured tin. A magnet will attach to all the tin and all the hardware. The arch accents and straight accents on the sides appear to be wood(the magnet does not stick but slides to the metal areas) The bottom has seen better days. The tin shows wear at the corner and at the bottom edges of the sides. I tried to show this in the pictures. The bottom has been covered with felt. There is no tin used on the bottom-it appears to be antique wood covered by felt. The interior has been lined with a cream colored polyester lining fabric. The lining was applied with upholstery tacks and a glue gun. Along the two short side there is a ridge of wood inside the trunk which probably held a tray at one time. In one corner. I was able to pull back the fabric and take a photograph of what looks like the original lining paper. All the nails in the top and sides look like they are original except 3 philips head screws that are used in one of the back hinges. I was trying to figure out why there were air holes on the sides when I realized that the handles are missing. The beauty of the shape is the main attraction. Measures 28" wide x 17" deep x 18" tall that peaks to 20" Very pretty piece. Looks like with a little work the original splendor of this piece would be a delight to own. These trunks are also described as Dome Topped or Hump Back trunks. No returns on this item. Local Pick up is prefered in Raleigh. NC. Shipping will be calculated by actual weight.
