We might also have different editions as well(some paperback, some hardcover, oftentimes international editions) If you don’t see what you want, please contact us and ask. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover(256 pages) Princeton University Press(2002) Much of the literature on ancient Egypt centers on pharaohs or on elite conceptions of the afterlife. This scintillating book examines how ordinary ancient Egyptians lived their lives. Drawing on the remarkably rich and detailed archaeological. Iconographic, and textual evidence from some 450 years of the New Kingdom, as well as recent theoretical innovations from several fields, it reconstructs private and social life from birth to death. The result is a meaningful portrait composed of individual biographies, communities, and landscapes. Structured according to the cycles of life. The book relies on categories that the ancient Egyptians themselves used to make sense of their lives. Lynn Meskell gracefully sifts the evidence to reveal Egyptian domestic arrangements, social and family dynamics, sexuality, emotional experience, and attitudes toward the cadences of human life. She discusses how the Egyptians of the New Kingdom constituted and experienced self, kinship, life stages, reproduction, and social organization. And she examines their creation of communities and the material conditions in which they lived. Also included is neglected information on the formation of locality and the construction of gender and sexual identity and new evidence from the mortuary record. Including important new data on the burial

Earrings: From Antiquity to the Present by Daniela Mascetti and Amanda Triossi. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 224 pages. Publisher: Thames and ... moreHudson; 1990) ISBN: 0500014930. There is an inexplicable magic about earrings. Unmatched by any other kind of jewelry. Uniquely, they move with a life of their own, voluptuous yet pure, cold yet provocative. Earrings have been worn since prehistoric times; ancient civilizations offered earrings to their goddesses, and today they remain the most demanding and rewarding exercises of the jeweler's art. Daniela Mascetti and Amanda Triossi, both experts from Sotheby's, are themselves under the spell of earrings, and their erudition does not disguise that this book is as much a romance as a fine piece of art-historical research. The authors relate how the fashion of wearing precious earrings spread from ancient Egypt to the Classical Greek and Roman worlds to Byzantium. Techniques in the cutting of gemstones and diamonds. Perfected in the eighteenth century, allowed earring design to evolve towards its most stylish and glamorous. Extraordinary and imaginative revivals of Classical and Roman motifs are here. The opulence of exquisitely crafted creations of gold and precious stones, the bold lines of Art Deco, and a rich proliferation of modern designs, from the most traditional to the most innovative, created by leading European and American designers. The book covers every period and style up to the present. The great names among designers and international jewelry houses; Cartier. Boucheron, Mellerio, Van Cleef& Arpels, Verdura, Andrew Grima, Merina B. David Webb, Harry Winston, Graff and Bulgari, are all represented in dazzling displays of precious and semi-precious earrings. Illustrations range from Rococo flowers and long, heavy girondoles thick with diamonds and emeralds to chaste Neoclassical disks and the delicate nodding sprays of the late nineteenth century. A wide-ranging study that will be a rich source of inspiration and delight for collectors,

The Lost Civilizations Of The Stone Age by Richard Rudgley. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 310 pages. Publisher: The Free Press; 1999) ISBN: ... more0684855801. This title challenges the notion that modern history is far superior to the events and accomplishments of early civilization. The author. A scholar of prehistoric art, religion, and technology, argues that the occurrences and characteristics of later human history have their origins in prehistory. He argues that the system of constellations in the night sky, the use of calculating instruments, and artistic representations all prove that the people of the Stone Age were anything but primitive. Perhaps after reading this insightful book, the reader will come away with an entirely different take on prehistory and its legacy. CONDITION: New hardcover w/dustjacket. Free Press(1998) 320 pages. Unblemished except VERY slight edge and corner shelf wear to dustjacket and covers. Dustjacket also exhibits very mild rubbing(dustjacket is high-gloss black and so shows rub marks very easily. Even merely from being shelved between other books) Very minimal shelf wear consistent with new stock from an open-shelf book store(such as Barnes& Noble, etc. Pages are pristine; clean, crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, unambiguously unread. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: Award-winning British scholar takes a provocative and engaging look at the Stone Age. Challenging some of the most basic assumptions about the beginnings of civilization, and offering a fascinating and rich introduction to a lost world. Line drawings and photo illustrations. Richard Rudgley is an Oxford-trained scholar of Stone Age art, religion and technology. PROFESSIONAL REVIEWS: REVIEW: Ever wonder what it was like to be a caveman? Whether you are a dentist. TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Peoples of the Past: Babylonians ... moreby H.W.F. Saggs. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 192 pages. Publisher: University of Oklahoma Press; 1995) ISBN: 0806127651. Babylon stands with Athens and Rome as a cultural ancestor of western civilization. It was founded by the people of ancient Mesopotamia. Who settled in the fertile crescent between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers before the fourth millennium B.C. Some of the earliest experiments in agriculture and irrigation, the invention of writing, the birth of mathematics and the development of urban life all began there. Biblical associations are also numerous, from Nineveh to the Tower of Babel and the Flood. In"Babylonians" H. W. F. Saggs describes the ebb and flow in the successive fortunes of the Sumerians, Akkadians, Amorites, and Babylonians who flourished in this region. Using evidence from pottery, cuneiform tablets, cylinder seals, early architecture and metallurgy, he illuminates the myths, religion, languages, trade, politics, and warfare, as well as the legacy, of the Babylonians and their predecessors. During the twentieth century. Collaboration by archaeologists from many nations has greatly increased the range of archaeological evidence, while work by linguists has gradually unlocked the secrets of the thousands of clay tablets recovered from the area. Today the historical record for some periods of ancient Mesopotamia is substantially better than for some centuries of Europe in the Christian era. Gaps and uncertainties remain, but Babylonians conveys a rich and fascinating picture of the development of this remarkable civilization from before the beginning of the third millennium B.C. CONDITION: Unblemished except VERY slight edge and corner shelfwear to dustjacket. Including a small(1/2 inch) closed, neatly mended edge tear to the front side of the dustjacket at the spine head. Catalogue of an Exhibition of American Paintings. Furniture, Silver, and other objects of art. The Hudson-Fulton Celebration-Volume II” By Henry Watson Kent& Florence Levy. Published in New York by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1909. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: An important early exhibition. This volume is devoted to American colonial paintings. Furniture and silver, as well as some ceramics and glass; the other volume was devoted to Dutch 17th century paintings, so if you don’t care about those, you’re in luck! The objects were drawn from a number of prominent private collections, including those of Palmer, Halsey, Bigelow, Barber, Lockwood, ... moreClearwater, Flagler, Bolles, and others. The text was written by H.W. Kent and Florence Levy, with contributions by Edwin Atlee Barber. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8"x11" 321 pages, many black& white illustrations. Catalog of Roycroft Furniture and other things” A facsimile reprint of the 1906 Roycroft Furniture catalog. Issued by Turn of the Century Editions in 1981. DISCUSSION: Roycroft furniture was not manufactured in large quantities. Nevertheless. It contributed significantly towards the growth of Arts and Crafts design in America. Furniture and other artifacts made by the Roycrofters at their community in East Aurora, New York, are easily identified by the incised orb and cross and/or“Roycroft” name. The 1906 catalog reprinted here depicts a substantial portion of the furniture designs produced under the forceful direction of Elbert Hubbard. Victorian Furniture” By R.W. Symonds& B.B. Whineray. Published in London by Country Life Ltd. in 1965. 2nd printing. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: It is not always appreciated that there were as many changes and trends in furniture design in the reign of Queen Victoria as there had been in those of the previous five sovereigns. Therefore. In the space of some 50,000 words, this book can attempt only a general survey of Victorian furniture and its use and place in the Victorian home. Discussion of any one aspect in great detail has not been possible; the Exhibitions, wood-working machinery, papier-mache and the Arts and Crafts Movement, to name but a few, are all subjects, closely connected with furniture, which have been or could have been expanded into works of their own. It is hoped, however, that enough has been ... moresaid on each subject to give a balanced picture of furniture throughout the Victorian era" Actually. B.B. Whineray protests too much. This is a well illustrated study of English Victorian era furniture which does a very good job exploring the development and influences of the styles, the methods and materials used, and the social context of the movement. Symonds, one of the leading authorities on English furniture, died during preparation of the book, and it was completed by Whineray, his assistant. Item Description This Ebay listing is for the sale of a CD ROM publication of a Victorian era trade catalogue of illustrated cabinet and upholstered furniture designs. CD ROM Title: Victorian Furniture Designs. Catalogs have always performed several roles in the trades and societies they have served and purveyed goods into. First of all. Catalogs educated us as to the current state of the art in commercially available goods. Second, they raise our expectations when we see new goods, ideas, designs, tools, and the methods or lifestyles that they imply or denote. Third, the stimulate us to look to create new methods, ideas, protocols, lifestyles, tools, and technologies or designs of our own. Fourth, they are both time capsules and travel ... moreguides to the past and the present in their respective régimes or areas of focus. They take us to exotic places and people and ideas we would never have encountered in our own lives or professional practices or work or schools and they show us the progression of others ideas from the old tools or products offered, to the newest and most progressive ones. Catalogs are the things dreams are made of, sometimes in plebian and profane ways as we covet what we see in them, and sometimes in the most elevated and profound and spiritually and intellectually inspiring ways as we see possibilities to evolve the future in most wondrous ways. Philadelphia Empire Furniture" By John William Boor. With Allison, Jonathan, Christopher, Peter Boor. Published by the University Press of New England in 2006. DISCUSSION: This volume looks closely for the first time at Philadelphia Empire furniture and the development of decorative arts in Philadelphia between 1800 and 1840. The authors explore Neo-Classicism. Contemporary history of Philadelphia, the emergence of Greek-Revival architecture, and the cabinetmakers of Philadelphia Empire furniture. At the beginning of the 19th century Greek-inspired architecture gained popularity in Philadelphia and the city became known for its classically-inspired monumental buildings. Newly designed structures of ancient inspiration were decorated with classical furniture that became the prevailing style in private homes as well as public buildings. ... moreThe arrival of immigrant craftsmen from Europe in the early 19th century and their subsequent collaboration with American furniture makers produced highly sophisticated Empire designs. Neither French nor English. The designs incorporated purely American elements and became known as American Empire. Nineteenth-century Philadelphia Empire craftsmen were particularly well-known for their extensive motif carving, which often has a fluid, three-dimensional character. Philadelphia Empire Furniture’ illustrates in color and describes in detail hundreds of Philadelphia decorative art forms from this period. Including wood types, dimensions, and maker(if known) Chapters are dedicated to each of the following forms: card tables, platform pedestal tables, pier tables, worktables, sofas, chairs, sideboards, secretaries, chests, bedsteads, looking glasses, clocks, and other decorative elements. A separate chapter is devoted to the previously unpublished sketchbook of accomplished craftsman Anthony G. Quervelle. Besides Quervelle, other talented and successful Philadelphia furniture makers included Michel Bouvier, Charles White, Cook& Parkin, and Joseph B. Barry, among several. This book

American Fancy. Exuberance in the Arts 1790-1840” By Sumter Priddy. Published by the Chipstone Foundation& the Milwaukee Art Museum in 2004. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Between 1790 and 1840. Millions of middle-class Americans throughout the nation encountered“Fancy” they rode in a Fancy sleigh, dressed up in Fancy clothes, blew their noses in Fancy handkerchiefs, bought goods at Fancy shops, ate at Fancy tables on Fancy dishes, and slept under Fancy coverlets. Not just fancy but Fancy: an early nineteenth-century cultural phenomenon born out of new and enlightened ways of seeing, understanding, and responding to the surrounding world. Fancy expressed itself in just about everything that pleased the senses; generally colorful and boldly patterned, it elicited delight, awe, surprise, whim, and caprice. Whether ... moreexperienced in the form of painted surfaces, kaleidoscopic quilts, or imaginary landscapes, Fancy engaged the emotions and expanded the imagination, expressing the core of human fancy. American Fancy offers an appropriately fantastic experience of this uniquely American sensibility. Author Sumpter Priddy has assembled and produced an original oeuvre in the field of decorative arts, going beyond the traditional modes of furniture analysis, which concentrate on style, history, and construction, to consider the perceptual and emotional responses through which the original users and viewers would have interacted with these material things. To this end he employs the interpretive methods used in the fields of literature, fine arts, philosophy and even psychology. Rich, fully illustrated, wondrously researched, and bound in a cover that imitates a typical Fancy pattern, American Fancy does its marvelous subject true. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 9.5”x12.5” 267 pages, color and black& white illustrations. CONDITION NOTES: There is a long. Warm gift inscription on the title page from the author. Minor wear. Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 An auction catalogue for an auction which took place at Sotheby’s in New York. On 20 January, 2006. As the title says, the auction was for“Important Americana: Including Property from the Collection of Elisha Hanson to Benefit the National Gallery of Art. The catalog is full of beautiful antique items, of the sort you would expect to discover in an old American estate or mansion. Tons of furniture, decorative items, lots of rare silver, and much more. Naïve art, grandfather clocks, folk art, paintings, and much more. Items range from 1700s and 1800s– lots of colonial and early American items. The sale consisted of 608 separate lots, all of which have extensive descriptions, all with full colour photos, and some of them even being full-page photos. Each item has a description, giving details of the ... moreartist or workshop, the work itself, dates, material, and so on. Also details of provenance, and provides an estimated price. This is great for the collector, so you can compare the value of these works with others. Also a great reference, as these artworks were assembled here once, only to be dispersed to different private buyers, most not to be seen in public again for a generation. The colour illustrations are stunning, and it’s like having a gallery or museum on your shelf! A great addition for anyone interested in American history, U.S. art, colonial historical material, and so on. The book is large format, measuring about 8 x 11 inches. It has a glossy cover, and is 484 pages long. The book is used, but in good condition. With only minor shelf wear, the book is in good condition. The glossy pages make this extremely heavy(well over 3 pounds) so the top bidder should add $13.90 postage in Canada, 18.90 postage to the USA. I have other, similar catalogs up now, so check that out too, and save on postage. Please e-mail me if you have any questions, and thanks for bidding!
