This trunk belonged to an aunt of mine who passed away in 1988 at the age of 102 years old. She at the time told of this trunk being in the family when she was a child. This would date this trunk back to the late 1800's at a minimum. Now over the years someone put a hasp on the thing in order to keep it secure(locked) One of the clips that hold the thing shut has the metal clamp or"hook" part missing. I have been told by antique dealers that it is not too hard to find one. The flowers. And birds that are put on it(some form of inlay or type of paint) are quite pretty. Though, after examining the trunk very closely.front, back, sides, top and bottom.we could find not a thing that points to anything other than original paint. With regard to the trunk's origin: Years ago. When I purchased the trunk at auction, the auctioneer had described the trunk"as found in Berks Co. Pennsylvania. This hand painted old chest is 53" long. 21" wide, 21 1/2" tall and I'm not sure what type of wood it is. It is dated 1897 and there are some names and dates written on the inside of the lid. There is wear- the paint is mostly worn off of the top. The lock has been removed and the keyhole plugged, the screws in the hinges have been replaced, there is some wormwood and the candle box has been rebuilt. The bottom"feet" have some rot and someone cut the worst off so it would sit level. Even with the wear to the wood it is still very sturdy and strong. This is a very clean great looking pine blanket chest originally made in the mid to late 1800's on Cape Cod. This chest is grain painted and has a drawer that is stained a fairly darker cranberry color. Really nice contrast to the amber color of the rest of the case. The drawer has the original brass pulls. And the hinges are original as well. The top is fastened to a board along the back edge of the case top. The hinges are recessed into the wood. Very cool. There are great square nails throughout this chest. The back is 2 wide boards, unpainted. Over all the condition is great, just a few minor nicks and scratches as you would expect on chests of this vintage. No rot or damage on the feet. The dimensions are 18.5 W x 43L x 34.5H. This chest of drawers was purchased by my grandmother on a trip to China approximately 30 or so years ago. This piece is hand painted with musical and dancing figures on 6 of the 8 sides. The orange paint has an interesting patina type wear to its finish. It has a nicely decorated handle that can swing either to the front or back. The drawers easily slide open using the embellished metal hardware on each drawer pull. The top piece can be removed to store items inside. Antique Hand Painted Chinese Dragon Rooster Double Happiness Cedar Trunk Chest
A children's size red lacquer. Hand painted cedar trunk from circa 1920. It has the Chinese dragon as well as the rooster. According to Chinese astrology t he Dragon and the Rooster are highly compatible due to their complementary differences. They do seem quite opposite in nature: The Dragon is fiery and exciting while the Rooster is practical. Even conservative; the Dragon operates on instinct while the Rooster relies heavily on planning. The Dragon is able to show the Rooster a good time, however, and can rely on the Rooster to bring it back down to earth when the Dragon flies too high. WW I era primitive shipping chest or crate advertising a local tailor in Salisbury NC that made military clothing. Solid. Hardwood walls, lid and bottom, constructed with old nails, all of which show age appropriate oxidation. Sides and lid are reinforced with wooden upright bars. The piece retains its original old dry red paint. This alone is beautiful but the original. Graphic black and gold stenciled advertising on lid, front and back makes this truly special! Reads. Lift style heavy iron closure and thick, iron loop handles on either side, Paint is all original and shows the perfect amount of age appropriate wear in all the right places.on edges. Up for auction today and purchased from an old estate auction. Is this cute little still bank made of cast iron, and made by G.B. Fenstermaker from Lancaster, PA. Signed on the bottom. Painted with a milky cream white and hand painted with colors in the front medallions, and on the top. There is some paint wear to the top, sides, and feet, but nothing major. Still a great looking bank. It reminds me of the original dowry chests made of wood, that would have been given for a wedding dowry back in the early 1800's made of wood. Very nice example of this.
