But I am having a really hard time deciphering it, it appears to be someone's name and then a place in New York. The trunk does have railroad transportation labels on both sides of the trunk. The trunk does have some wear as you can see, original front lock hardware is missing and it does have surface loss. Some of the paint has alligatored a bit on the sides as you can see from the photos. Trunk measures 35.25 inches wide by 17.25 inches deep by 17 inches tall. It has labels for New York Central Railroad and Westcott express one side and the other side has a very partial label and from what I can tell it is in French. The front of the trunk may read Hauve(France)New York. I think this is a really nice piece, I think it has a good folk art look to it and great to find it with original green paint. The metal detailing throughout is stunning. The footing I’ve never seen. The latches say“patd 79” and the middle plate says. Patd May 54 and April 73. Hence, this is pre-1880. The inside is rough but it still has all the Victorian inserts! The inserts are in really tough shape, ripped, water damaged but it’s all there. The entire drawer/insert comes out. A bit rough. Someone removed the lock portion of the main latch. It is an unusual double latch design. The compartment lid inside has broken and been repaired. Corner wear, some surface rust and oxidation. Leather handles broke off and were replaced with some very heavy duty brass handles a long time ago. The brass handles appear to be quite old. One of the cast strap clamps is broken yet all there. There is some damage to the tin clad skin. Original lining is cracked and torn in places. It appears to be all original with the exception of the handles and has not been painted(painting these trunks takes away from their value significantly) I'm sure I'm missing something so please look at the photos carefully and ask questions! Item is available for preview with appointment. I personally would leave it an unrestored original yet it could be restored bringing its value up. This would make a great display piece in your store, business or home. It has a covered hat/ glove compartment in the lid. Hardwood slats. Small Antique Dome Wood Trunk ~ B. C. Sweetser Label ~ Portsmouth, N.H. ~ 1875
Wonderful antique wooden storage trunk made by B. C. Sweetser& Sons of Portsmouth. N.H. in 1875. We were able to date the trunk as it originally was lined with old newspaper dated June 1875. The newspaper was removed as it was heavily water stained, torn, brittle and musty. We were able to save the original manufacturer label in the center of the interior of the lid. Interior is now clean and can be used to store items. The exterior is original(not refinished, only cleaned) with a warm dark wood patina; original lock(no key) and iron handles. Dome style lid. Original brass tacks on exterior. Solid original bottom. Great trunk for the collector! Measures 28 inches by 15 inches; 12 inches tall on the sides. There is a handle at one end only. There are 2 holes side by side and both ends of chest. possibly a location for securing it in place. Possibly the back of a carriage. This little trunk. 22" long, 11" high, 11" wide, is in remarkably good condition for its advanced age, sure its missing a couple straps and leather handles on ends but how many trunks of this age are this good. This trunk has not been repaired or altered from its original state. It has leather hinges and one is broken. original lock, might be handmade. Initials on top and tack holes beside them suggest more initials. The interior has very old newspapers in bottom and top, one is dated 1831. This beautifully authentic Dome Top(also known as hump back. Humpback or camel back) are circa 1840 to 1900 and many have literally travelled around the world many times over before coming to you! On the interior of the trunk are some original Chromolithographs or Victorian Lithographs which was a method for making multi– color prints. Depending on the number of colors present. A chromolithograph could take months to produce by very skilled workers that could be extremely expensive. Measurements: 32” long x 16 ½” wide x 19” tall and weighing approximately 27 lbs. Plentiful nails and amazing-fine hardware makes this a high-end piece, often known as a Saratoga Trunk. The reason for the curved top is to ensure that this trunk would go on the top of the stack. Rather than having trunks stacked on top of it, damaging the contents. I have not altered or refinished this trunk. I purchased it from a lady who stated it was in the stable area of her very old, victorian home. The home was built in the early 1900's. INSIDE: I believe it is constructed of Pine with a floral paper design. Which means this trunk belonged to a Woman. OUTSIDE: Has a dark metal/tin tone. 4) wooden, Elm? vertical slats on the dome top, 2) horizontal wooden slats ... moreon the front& back, 1) wooden slat on each side. There is a 16" wide Alligator Leather look design area on the top that extends down the front and back and along both sides that is divided by leather slats. I was told this design area is an ornate hammered tin. The metal work is very nice and when this trunk was new, must have been gorgeous. There are(8) metal shield type designs holding down the top wood slats. On the top side ends, there are large metal Crown like designs. There are(2) brown leather handles. 1 handle is torn but repairable. This trunk was definitely for a woman of importance. Approximate Dimensions: 22" High@ the highest-middle 32.5" Wide 17.5" Deep Condition: This trunk is in good antique condition. There is normal wear. Which is expected, due to it's age. The bottom inside does have a few minor cracking in the wood. There is not a lock on the trunk. All the nails& design hardware are there, as far as I can see. Antique Young Girls Trunk w/ Dome Top & Wood & Metal Frame Edwardian / Victorian
Hello! This is a very old trunk with a metal and wood black-painted frame. On the inside. The wood is lined with a decorative patterned paper and the image of a girl's face-perhaps the girl who owned the trunk. It has a convex/dome top. As well as an inside tray that can come out. Please refer to pictures for age imperfections and detail. The leather handles have since come off. The wheels work alright. There is some staining to the inside. The trunk will need a good cleaning and a spray to the inside. Unless you like the old book aroma. Leather handles are on the ends. It is designed to look very much like ... moresteamer trunks used by grown ups of the age. Overall size: 14" wide x 9" deep x 10" high On the exterior there is some loss and wear to the printed paper here and there. Both leather handles are broken but still there, and the paperboard trim that goes around the lid is detached at one corner. I see some light moisture stains to the paper as well. The wooden slats could use some polish. Overall the condition of the exterior is above average compared to the majority of unrestored trunks like this one. No key for the trunk. And the lid half of the latch doesn't have the part that would attach to the bottom part where you put the key. Inside. The ribbon like support string that holds the trunk upright when open is detached on one end, there is a panel type door missing from the lid, there is a tear to another lid panel, and there is a panel type door missing from the till and the one that is still attached to the lid is loose at the paper hinge. The paper condition inside is decent overall comparatively. Take a good look at the pictures to judge condition for yourself in case I missed something. As asset liquidators. Returned to New England in the 1920's where it was bought by us in the 70's, and brought back out west in 1992, then brought back east in 2010. Trunks of this size were first sold in the very late 1700's and early 1800's. But really didn't become popular until about 1810. Dome-top trunks became popular with travelers beause their shape required that they end up on top of the trunk pile. The domed surface made it all but impossible to stack another trunk on top, so these would usually go on top of the pile. This was very important- it meant your trunk be unloaded first upon reaching your desitination, so you could be on your was before the rest of the passengers. It's important ... moreto note that this trunk was originally covered in animal hide- most likely horse hide, with the hair still attached. Known as'hide trunks' these were popular with tavelers of the day and were made by small shops, saddlers, and blacksmiths throughout the eastern United States. The make. According to the label, was Robert Burr, who operated in Boston for several decades. Hide-covered trunks like yours were often made by saddlers in varous towns and places all up and down the eastern seaboard. a basic wooden box was constructed, and then a wet animal hide, usually horse hide, was stretched over the box and nailed in place with copper or brass tacks. As the hide dried it would shrink a little, which made the wood joinery come together tightly, adding strength to the trunk. The owner's initials were often set in into the top of the trunk with decorative tacks, and hand-forged handles were added for ease in lifting. ANTIQUE DOME TOP DOLLS TRUNK - 2 x VICTORIAN DOLLS DRESS - MINIATURE TRUNK SHOES
A collection of Victorian doll's accessories comprising an antique domed-lidded paper-covered trunk. A miniature antique dome-lidded paper-covered trunk, two pretty Victorian printed cotton dresses circa 1860 and a pair of Victorian doll shoes with leather soles, size 6. These items are in fairly good condition: The larger chest is good. Though the side of the tray is lost. The miniature chest is in good condition with minor scuffs. The sprigged print dress is in good condition, with one button lost. The pink dress has two small holes in the lower frill. The shoes are a bit creased and the patent finish a little cracked but they would straighten quite well when worn by a doll. The photos can be enlarged for more detail.
