ANTIQUE SOLID OAK CHEST TRUNK COFFER, EARLY 1700’s
This antique solid oak chest/trunk/coffer came into our family when it was purchased from an antique store in Summerland. California back in the mid 1980's. It was sold to us with the provenance that it is from the early 1700's and was a ship captain's chest/trunk/coffer and was from England. Condition as shown in the pictures is as we received it and it has been well cared for since it came into our hands. It has the original hand forged iron hardware and does have the original working lock and key. The construction is with wood pegs and the main box is made with one piece oak planks, with the front and side decorations placed over that. Overall dimensions of this piece are: approximately 48" long, by approximately 24" deep, by approximately 24" high. Considering that the planks used in this piece are all straight ... moregrain with no knots, it is quite possible the tree the wood came from was very old itself. FANCY ANTIQUE VINTAGE STEAMER CHEST DOME TOP TRUNK OAK FANCY TIN 1870'S
This is first of 2 real nice antique trunks just found this morning here on the Maine coast. This is a dome top(some call it a hump top) trunk which to me is great just the way it is(lots of character) or refinished would be a marvelous piece. It's big. It's heavy and solid, but I will ship it. Heavy duty solid brass latch and plate(with pat'd dates) cast iron locks(with pat'd dates) and the iron brackets where the leather handles attach(see pics) have the design of an anchor. The trunk has the original brass lock but sadly no key, it has metal carrying handles at each end and would make a fantastic coffee table, toy box or stage prop. GORGEOUS WHITE VICTORIAN ANTIQUE LADIES DOME TOP TRAVEL TRUNK The chest is covered with embossed tin which has a scrolling design. Wood slats reinforce the wood structure and add a beautiful design. Beautiful classic black Victorian paper lines the inside on all sides, the inside bottom and the inside top of the dome. The wood slats are in excellent condition. The wood finish still beautiful. The trunk closes with a lock(no key) in the middle and two latches. The hardware is antique brass and has an embossed fancy design which looks like a Celtic shamrock or design. 30" long x 18" tall x 17" deep. Weighs 24 pounds Great old trunk. Reasonable offers considered CONDITION: This is an old trunk and will show some signs of being old. It is in great condition for its age. The leather handles are missing. There is a lock although we have not snapped the lock shut because we do not have a key. The hinges and hardware are all present. A very nice piece of travel history. A 1925 Belber steamer trunk with original drawers and wood hangers. The stickers are original to the period Cunard and some have the Queen Mary on them with an original Queen Mary pennant included. The size is 41" high by 21 1/4"x 20 1/2" There are a few nicks and minor dings. There is no key. A rare and beautiful looking trunk. You'll have a hard time finding another one in this condition. 1800's Refinished Antique Dome Top Steamer Trunk Chest with Casters Nicely refinished primitive dome top steamer trunk or travel trunk from the mid to late 1800's Exterior dimensions: 28" W x 18" H x 15-3/4" D Constructed of pine base wood with oak or ash outer slat boards and side handles Wood finish has a reddish brown color There are older scrapes and dings in various places which are quite common markings considering the trunk's age Inscription on the lock reads"PAT'D March'69& Apr. 77" with a star shape on both ends of the inscription The lock does appear to be all there and intact. It is called a Saratoga trunk which became popular with the wealthier class for those traveling to spas and to the Saratoga Springs in New York during the Victorian Era. It was a large domed top s tylewith fancy trim. Covered in either leather or metal. Early trunk ads and catalogs describe the Saratoga as"large round trunk of the highest class. It is believed that dome tops where made for those who wanted to have their trunks packed on the top of the baggage so as to avoid damage at the bottom of the heap. The chest is covered with embossed metal which has an ornate scrolling design. Solid wood slats reinforce the wood structure and add a beautiful design. Vintage Antique Flat Top Steamer Chest Trunk Metal and Wood. I don't know the details on this trunk. Similar ones seem to be from the late 1800's but this is unique in the fact that it is covered in metal with wood trim. It has a flat top. Removable tray and wheels that I placed coasters over. NO RESERVE… This auction is for a very old Wood Chest. This piece came from a Hollywood Movie Prop Sale. I have no idea what movie it was used in. The Chest measures approx. 22 inches long. 12 inches wide and about 11 inches tall to the peak on the hump top. The chest is very old constructed with dove tail corners. Somewhere all the road someone lined it with old wall paper. That paper is also old as there are areas where it is coming off and very worn. It would make a nice project for someone to re line the inside with different vintage paper. There are many old age cracks and repairs. There is a center narrow piece of wood at the very center of the top that has been replaced. There is some old termite damage near the bottom. And lots of other old scars and scrapes from all the years. Please not the inside lip on the edge is missing on the ... moreright side, but that doesn't show when the lid id closed. Rochester, NY, Established 1844, Trade Mark This is a Flat Top trunk. Which makes it particularly good for use as a coffee table. This trunk originally came with Leather Straps. Fragments of which still remain. ... moreIf you restore this trunk, then I hope you get a leather worker to make new straps(which would look great) This trunk has Wooden(oak) Slats. Which now have a rich patina from years of use. I polished the exterior of the trunk and the slats look even better in my opinion. The lock is open and appears to be functional. But we don't have the key. This trunk includes the Till. It is covered in paper which is chipping and peeling. I would remove it if you restore the trunk. The edges of the trunk are leather. The exterior surface of the trunk is fabric over wooden construction. The fabric is well worn and frayed. With bits missing, especially along the edges. If you restore the trunk, one direction you can take would be to strip the exterior(and interior) of the covering and simply finish the wood underneath. The corners and some of the edges are metal bound. The metal has a nice dark patina. The leather handles on the ends are now gone. New leather is needed there. Inside. The fabric covering is badly stained and either should be removed and the wood underneath finished, or replaced. The interior smells musty and old, but not mildewed in my opinion. Antique Haskell Bros Leather Stagecoach-Auto Travel Trunk/Coffee Table Chest&Key
This is a rare find as you don't find sole tooled leather trunks made by the Haskell Brothers Trunk Makers of Chicago very often. The original wood strips and metal"feet" are in good working order. The lock was made by Excelcior Lock and has a patent date of 1864. There is a key which"almost" turns the lock and guessing some lubrication may fix it? I have done nothing to the leather except wipe the dust off. Straps are missing and one handle and strap retainer is inside the trunk. One end is stenceled'Rochester. Minn' Neat trunk which could be used to store bedding at the foot of your bed or even a coffee table(no inside odor) If refurbished it would make a nice travel chest on the back of your vintage automobile.
