It's a beautiful trunk with tons of character and that true folk art flavor. Many trunks that were highly decorated like this were wedding trunks but who can know? It has a hinged lid as you can see in the pictures. The trunk has red white and blue with some green accents. The paint appears to be painted over what appears to be a green trunk that has some Romanian name lettering on the front. It was probably a trunk that originally came over by ship then painted by the owner after getting to America. This is all original and has nicks. Chips and scrapes, and worm marks on it as you'd expect from an item of this age. The painting on the front and sides is very colorful and worn through several areas to base color. Wow! That's amazing! The trunk is wonderfully hand painted. Inside. The trunk is clean. There's a little tray on the left side inside, and it still has the original cover or lid to the tray. One of the hinges on the lid of the trunk was replaced at some point but is still old. The hardware on the sides is old and ornate. There are no square nails in this trunk that we can see and there are a number of worm holes at the bottom of the front and under the front lip. This is typical for old trunks like this as they've been around the block(and world) It's an nice size and is 39" wide(at the lid) L x 16" W x 14" H. It weighs about 50 lbs. we'd guess. This is a very nice trunk for those of you who love Primitives or folk art. It's one of a kind! It would certainly make for an interesting conversation piece. Thank you for looking at this item. Up for bid is this awesome vintage steamer trunk. This amazing wardrobe-style chest normally stands upright on rollers and is pulled by a single handle on the top. The trunk is intended to travel on its wheels. But it also sits nicely on its side if desired. Once opened. The trunk reveals four drawers of varying sizes on one side. On the other side, a drape hangs over a small closet. A covered small suitcase box holds wooden hangers to be used in the closet- it fits into place to make a storage space at the bottom of the closet area. The top of the closet opens up. See pics. The interior of the trunk is all nicely lined. Including the drawers. The interior hardware and hangers are intact. There is a lock on the top drawer, I do not see a key for it, although the exterior lock on the trunk comes with its key. Based on the information on the ... moreexterior lock hardware. It was made by the Eagle Lock Company, Terryville, Conn USA, no. 56K12. I could find no other manufacturer identifiers on the trunk. The leather handle on the trunk is stamped with the number 16. Italian Renaissance Cassone or Late 1700's Antique Dowry Chest or Trunk. An Italian"Cassone" is a traditional dowry chest or trunk in Renaissance design. Descending with the daughters of a prosperous family. This example from about 1775 is solid walnut with an excellent finish and warm antique patina. There are shrinkage separations and mars for antique character. A bride's dowry including linens and silver would have been kept in this prized heirloom possession. The top originally lifted. This furniture from northern Italy has been altered to allow the the locking front panel to open instead, so things could be set on top, useful as a wide screen TV console. You're bidding on a nice old well built trunk in unusual color of green and black. I really believe this is a salesman sample. It's 10" x 6" x 4" hgt. It's metal clad wood with interesting paper lining. The lock is made by Eaglelock co. Of Terryville conn. Lock and latches work and key locks it. One leather handle is missing the other is broke. This box is stunning! It is large at approximately 20" wide. 11 1/2" deep and 9 1/2" tall, plus the 3-D brass turtles on top of the lid. It has four drawers that are 9 3/4" deep. It has two brass hinges on the back and a hinged lock closure that would accommodate a traditional Chinese pin key. The front and top of the trunk are covered in brass decoration; rich engraved/etched calligraphy, symbols, and animals(bats for longevity) Two turtles are tiny 3D sculptures, one has a moving head! It all has a lovely old patina. The lower left hand drawer has some corrosion on it that could easily be cleaned. There are butterfly motifs on the sides where handles once were, they no longer exist. The interior has some tatty, old velvet lining in some drawers and someone in some past decade painted the interior lid with bronze paint( ... moreIt could probably be cleaned off, although I would myself probably put a beveled mirror or picture over the paint. Beautiful Antique Vanderman Strong Box This is an 1897 Vanderman Strong Box In great vintage condition. It was made by the Vanderman Mfg. Co. of Willimantic. Conn. and patented July 13, 1897. Vanderman manufactured these boxes in several different sizes This one is large HARD TO FIND with 6 Handles. 38"L x 19"W x 20'H It is made of steel which was formed into a rectangular shape and on the top& sides are solid oak wood staves/slats riveted to the steel. The corners have custom fit steel reinforcing at every outside edge point. There is a Vanderman brass plaque at the lower center of the front panel Would make a great coffee table. Antique 1850's Civil War Era Robert Burr Leather Stage Coach Chest Trunk
Up for auction is an incredible attic found. Rare Robert Burr, signed leather stage coach truck in original condition. This was recently pulled from a family home attic crawlspacee and was FULL of family history documents from the 1850's-60's, some of the contents are included with the sale. This is a beautiful surviving example of Boston's Robert Burr Trunk Manufacturer. I am seeing this called an officer's Ditty Box. This trunk has hand tooled designs on the top and is decorated with brass tacks all over in wonderful primitive designs including the initials of the owner Gilbert Jillson of Woonsocket RI. There is a wonderful clean manufacturer label and a secret compartment. The leather is still in relatively good condition but the straps are partially missing. Photos show the condition. I don't see any repairs. This ... moretrunk measures 27" wide x 15" deep x 12" high. Under the lid there is a compartment that is opened by removing a wooden stick through cloth straps. This compartment opens and can fill the top possibly with clothing or documents. I don't know. The lock is brass and has a large leather protecting flap that would be strapped shut. No key but the lock appears to most likely work. This truck was full to the top with family history including Civil War tin types. Land deeds, love letters etc. Included with the trunk are a few interesting documents. There is a Woonsocket RI Patriot newspaper from 1865. Communication letter to a land buyer stamped and dated 1854, an advertizing postcard for Animal Veterinary Surgeon Levi Wilson, 1857 complete original land deed and original 1858 land survey. You are welcome to inquire after the sale about other contents but I am including only what I have just described. Large full-sized 20th century Chinese blanket chest or trunk made of solid Rosewood in an antique or traditional style. The chest is quite substantial and sturdy; it measures 40" long x 21" deep x 22 1/2" high. It is of quality construction. And in very good to excellent condition. The chest is made of solid rosewood. And not veneer, and is finished on all 4 sides plus top; with a cedar lined inside. The style is classic with subtle Asian touches evident in the brass latch hardware. And the feet of the chest. There are no carvings. The hardware is solid brass. It has a classic look. Never goes out of style, mixes well with modern or traditional decor. Could be used at the foot of a bed, for a coffee table, a TV stand, and many other uses. Condition: a few minor nicks and scuffs. But overall very good to excellent. No water ... morestains. There is some minor shrinkage to the floating panels(top and sides) that seems to self adjust with more humidity as the weather changes. Very old all wood 1942 vintage trunk. It has lost most of the paint and someone has put vintage superheroes stickers all over it many. Many years ago. All the hardware is metal including the latches, corners and all the ends. One corner piece is missing. The handles on the sides are wood. All the hinges and latches work. Inside lid reads Shwyder Bros Inc 1942. If you look closely at the pictures of the lid you can see there is also some stencil letter writing. Antique 1667 German Oak Hammered Iron Traveling Trunk Coffer Chest 17th Century
Antique 1667 German Oak Hammered Iron Traveling Trunk. Measures 44" wide by 25" high by 23" depth. NOT a reproduction. My parents bought this over from a trip to Europe in 1971. Extremely sturdy. Very little damage, just on some of the iron and I have the small the piece that is missing from the left bottom, it needs to be reattached. No key. There are two U-shaped pieces that would attach the trunk to a coach in the back. I have the shipping manifest with the shipping date of Feb. 1972 when my parents shipped it from Germany. This is obviously a very heavy piece(I guesstimate well more than 200 pounds) and would need to be shipped by a freight carrier. The inside of the Trunk is completely clean with a few nicks in the paper(see photo) The top of the trunk is all smooth. But you can see some cracks in the paint. If you are handy with refurbishing, this trunk is a great find. I must say, that the condition is not that bad, but I wanted to mention all from a critical point of view. I have used this trunk with all that is mentioned above and it looks great as is. But, with a little TLC, it can look brand new again! Local Pickup only
