The leather handles are gone and there isn't any key. The sad part is that while I was taking photos of the tin bottom, the trunk somehow locked itself and I don't have a key. I did check with the local Antique Mall and they had some that were close, but they didn't work. I'm so thankful that I took photos of the inside first! RARE ANTIQUE STUDDED STAGECOACH TRUNK MANSFIELD STEAMER CHEST NO KEY
This is a VERY RARE LEATHER TOP PADDED SEAT& studded MANSFIELD Stagecoach or Steamer Trunk. There is no key. I think it dates from the 1800's. It is made of iron studs and wood and has its original fittings and inside compartments and label. There is a compartment in the lid, It has a wood bottom. The label reads T. Mansfield Manufacture- also there is a steamboat detroit label on the one side.The lock is not marked that we can tell. It is approximately 27 1/2" wide, 17" deep at the deepest point and 14" tall to the crest. The leather straps are broken and a few brass studs are missing. This is a great ORIGINAL old locking trunk. From the mid 1800s it is all wood with hand forged steel straps. It comes with it's original lock and key. It has what is left of a red label from the WHITE STAR LINE Shipping Co. The front is painted with the original shipping address. The top is marked with the makers name C:ROSET and has it's original carrying handle. The condition is excellent for it's age and the lock works well. inside top left had 2 pieces of wood that are missing that would of made a small shelf) From a Doctors Estate this week. Measures 17 I/2 inches wide. Is 12 inches deep and about 12 1/2 inches tall with it's dome top. NR.
