The other words. Especially the top and what appears to be state initials I am unable to read. This piece is very heavy. The wood appears to be walnut. It has been refinished- that I can tell. Southern Chest Drawers Knox County Tennessee c 1810 Furniture Antique Hand Made
Selling a real piece of Southern folk art furniture from Knox County. Tennessee, c around 1800/ 1820. This is an example of the early rural cabinet maker's art. There are two small drawers side by side across the top above three larger single wide drawers. There is a handsome Chippendale style tall bracket base. The hand carved trim up and down the two sides is very Sheraton looking and executed by a man without a lathe in his cabinet shop. It has such PRESENCE! The drawer pulls appear to be replacements, although the pull for the compartment, plus lock and escutcheon appear to be original. This old map chest was left to me by a man I took care of for awhile before he passed away. I am scaling down and am selling some of my older pieces. The chest is wood- not sure what kind- maybe oak. It has six drawers. I do NOT know its age. But I do know many people can tell age of older furniture by looking at how it is constructed. I tried to use pictures that will show this. It is well made, I do know that. It has round feet that are flat on top and bottom- see picture. It is in super condition for its age and could be re-stained or varnished. I used it as it is because I don't mind the older look. Measures 24" wide by 17.5" deep and about 27" tall. This piece is in Excellent Original Condition with minimal wear to the wood. There are surface scratches, you can refer to the pictures. Being handmade there are a few slight gaps in the wood so the drawers are slightly loose, there is a slight gap between the top drawer and the top of the chest. The drawer measures 8 5/8" tall x 11 1/4" wide at the top x 10 7/8" wide at the bottom x 5 3/8" deep, each knob measures 1/2" and the chest weighs approximately 2lb 3oz. It is old. It is dusty, it is rustic, it is huge, it is heavy, it is stained, it has been used and used& used some more, it is FLAWESOME! What is not to love about this amazing barn find? This is a handmade carpenters tool chest. It would be an amazing coffee table, porch item, foot of the bed chest, side table etc. Oh the possibilities are as big as it is huge! Unfortunately I don't have an exact age on this chest. However I can tell you it was found in a peg& beam barn in Knox County Ohio that was on its last leg. It had antique/vintage wood working tools in it galore as well(not included in sale) Of the tools, one is a very rare antique 1800's John S. Fray rosewood hand drill, as well as a few antique wood planers, carpenter squares, hammers, saws etc. Truly an amazing find! Now about the age, I'm guessing, and I know just enough to be totally wrong. The size makes me think it was made in the days when there were no closets. The heft makes me think of Empire or Gothic furniture, and the look and the knobs seem American to me. So my guess would be mid 1800s, maybe 1840-1870-but what do I know? You decide for yourself, and ignore my misleading guesses. All the drawer pulls match and there is a key for the biggest drawer. Condition: You will see normal wear and tear-light scratches and stains-and there is a small crack on the top. I see nothing major or unexpected for a piece this size and age. You'll love it! This nicely made 1860s-80s ash wood chest of drawers measures 12 ¼” tall x 13 1/8” x 7 ¼” deep and appears to have original. Untouched varnished surface overall. The top and each drawer are framed by red striping with sprays of flowers hand painted in the middle. Each drawer has sweet turned walnut knobs and all appear to be original. The sides have extra nice cuts and the back is of thin sawn pine. Construction overall is butt wire nail with glue and there are scattered old nail and glue repairs. The top deck has two small concave front drawers over a case of three long drawers the top drawer is a serpentine front. Has scrolled front legs and little turned back legs. It is 9 1/4 inches high. This is an original blanket chest from the Amish country of Berks County Pennsylvania. I got it from an old man who was breaking up his home and down sizing. He said it belonged to his grandmother and he was in his 70's. It is in great condition with crackle paint. Quarter round around the lid. The lid hinges are perfect, the drawers tight and clean. It is 41 inches tall. 20 inches wide, 43 inches long. The drawers are 6 3/4" tall and 8" tall by 17" wide by 39" long. The blanket space is 15" deep, 17" wide and 39" long.

The surface of this fine commode is a vivid display of flowers and foliage on intermingling vines over a parquetry background. The mounts on either corner are heavily acanthus in nature, rather bold and conforming appropriately with the Rococo naturalism of the pulls and central apron motif. The sabots are typical for the style, very nicely cast and of appropriate substance for the size of the case. The castings are of medium fine detail, ranking above most peers of it's period in terms of chasing and filing of details.
