Condition: Used Location: Cabin John, United States This is a Vintage Mahogany Dresser Mirror. Also referred to as a Shaving Mirror or Shaving Stand, hand made by Potthast Brothers in the 1930's. As ... moreis typical Potthast, the details on this piece are exquisitely done. The mahogany wood grain is wonderfully rich and the turnings are a masterpiece. There are 3 drawers, and the dovetails on the drawers are cut by hand. The knobs are delicately turned. The mirror is held in place by solid brass thumb pieces carefully inlaid into the posts. The top of the cabinet section is inset and the sides are framed by short turned columns which add an interesting touch and create balance. It measures 24 inches wide by 25 1/4 inches tall to the top of the spindle posts by 9 inches deep. The mirror itself in it's frame is 20 inches by 16 inches. This piece would make a handsome and functional addition sitting on top of a dresser. I took the photos outdoors so the lighting would show the condition of this piece and the beautiful wood grain. There are some small dings and scratches to the finish which. I believe add to the character of the piece. There is some color fading from sunlight on the surface behind the mirror. The Potthast Brothers Furniture Company was founded in 1892 by brothers Vincent. John, Theodore and William who came to Baltimore from Westphalia, Germany. A fifth brother remained in Germany and was also a furniture maker. The business and showroom was located in the prestigious building at 964 N Charles Street in Baltimore. We had the pleasure of spending time with Theodore and his wife who lived a shore distance from our home when we lived in Baltimore. In 1996. This is a beautiful and rare antique period American birdseye chest of drawers which is probably 1830s in age. The chest is unsigned but attributed to John Needles of Baltimore who was a famous cabinet maker back then. It measures 41 inches in height. The top is 49.5x19.5 inches. It is original finish and very clean. I believe the pulls are original as well. It is well made and a beautiful chest with the pronounced birds eye drawer fronts. It is well made which is how the old cabinet makers used to make them. Due to the size of this piece it either needs to be picked up here on Cape Cod or it must be shipped freight at the cost of the purchaser. We can recommend a couple of freight shippers on the east coast who do a very nice job for a reasonable price. However shipping west of the Mississippi can cause a jump in the freight price so please keep that in mind when bidding. They are dovetailed front and back corners and all bottoms are the original hand planed ones. Po plar secondary wood. I believe that the mirror being so clear is a replacement glass. It may have had a beveled one which I am sure would be wonderful if an other could be found. T he back of mirror has hand nailed thick paper so if it was rep laced then it looks to be early on 1900's. All the pierced carving i s in good shape and all there. I have set the TV on it, placed it in the foyer, bedroom, etc. There are great details, inset drawers, English style bun feet, gorgeous solid brass hardware and a very slight white wash to the finish. I took a picture of the dovetailed drawers. There is a mar on the inside of a drawer that does not affect the use. Drawers open and close well. Sorry about the shadows on the photos! The piece has the numbers#16911-350 on the back and says Oak. But I believe that is the stain color. I believe it was built in the 1980's as a document reproduction for this collection. Though it is in good condition. There are some drops of faint red(candle wax? and a few slight blemishes on the top and left top corner. There are surface scratches from use. Dimensions are 39" tall x 37" wide x 19" deep. On my home weight scale. It weighs between 95 and 100 pounds, but I cannot promise that it is accurate.
