antique 1890's authentic horsehair lap blanket. this is made from an actual horse hide.this is a very high quality hide. it has been professional tanned. What do you think it is? This makes me think of Mayans or Aztecs. Indigenous peoples of the area now known as Mexico. The rug measures approx. 26.75" by 60" There is fringe at both ends. But it has gotten worn over the years and some of it is missing especially at the top. Antique/Vintage Mexican Latin American Loom Blanket
From what I can find. This is a wool blanket which was hand woven on a Mexican/ Latin American loom. I am guessing it is from the 19 4 0's or 5 0's. If you have information on the history please let me know. We found t his blanket in the back of my late mother-in-law's closet wrapped in a sheet. It is fresh with vibrant colors of reds. Yellow, black, blue, green and off- white. Looks as if it has never been used. Because I cannot say that for certain I am listing it as used. This Antique Wooven Coverlet has three colors and measures 75"x60" It was made in two pieces with the seam down the middle. It has fringes on three sides. The back side is shown in a couple of the pictures. It has one very small hole by the seam as shown in one of the pictures. There are a few other small worn spots as shown in pictures. Overall the coverlet is in very good shape for its age. I am 65yrs old and I was told it was made by my Great Grandmother. It was passed down to my father who would be 92yrs old. I am not familiar with the correct vernacular for the differences of the First Nations, Eskimo, Inuit and or Indian; so please excuse my ignornace. I just know that this is an incredible piece of original folk art. Completely HAND DONE, including I believe; the actual stitching of the individual larger patches of the solid colors that has the embroidery. The embroidery stitches vary in size and style; which makes me wonder was it done by the same person or did the community/family participate. The fabric overall feels like boiled wool and is most likely hand loomed/woven. The center red area reminds me of a few garments that I have seen and a man's jacket that I once owned dating 18th century- my jacket had British provenance. There is various fabric used as a backing, all which are also patched and hand stitched similar to basting- a long stitch but tighter; again it is patches that appear to be salvage pieces and the ones particularly along the border I believe are hand woven. This was loomed in two pieces, each measuring approx. 30" and hand sewn together down the center. I love the naturally occurring"slubs" in the weave. The two hems are rolled and hand sewn. Overall size is approx. 60" x 84" I did not see any holes. And it's a fantastic piece of old wool with no smells or stains. It is in exceptional condition for it's advanced age! Both the coverlet and the pillowslip have a fine and delicate floral net lace overlay with a small cutwork lace and embroidery insertion panel with pretty pink. Blue and green floral embroidery. The dainty pale ecru net lace is covering a deep carnation pink fabric, so very sweet and feminine. Both of these antique French linens have a lovely scalloped net lace ruffle all around and the coverlet also has an extra ruffle near the top. The coverlet also has a breathtaking floral insertion net lace panel with thickly ... moreembroidered cutwork flowers and circles. The lace ruffle has a few tiny brown spots and there is one break in one thread on the front lace panel near the top. There is also a 1/2" separation of the lace at the seam near the lower left corner. There is a 1/4" break in the edge of the ruffle at the top. The back is a pale icy blue fabric which is softly faded in areas ~ see photos. The coverlet measures 25" x 32" including the lace ruffle) and is the perfect size for a cradle or bassinette. The pillowslip is also in excellent condition! There are a couple of tiny brown spots on the lace ruffle and a couple on the net lace front panel- none of which detract from the beauty of these linens. There are no breaks in the front lace panel and only a bit of fraying where the ruffle seam was sewn together at one of the gathered corners. The back of the pillowslip is a net panel opening in the center ready to insert an 11.5" x 15.5" pillow insert. The net backing is sewn on 3& 1/2 sides. Exquisite Miao blanket from southern China. Sunset colors of pink. Purple, orange, and gold embroidery are in silk while the blue of the sky is cotton. The whole piece is also anchored to cotton, most probably home-spun and quite durable. Large with beautiful geometric shapes, the blanket consists of 3 panels sewn together as is the norm with these blankets. It has seen some use and is a bit worn in places. For some strange reason, it seems to be almost exclusively the purple silk that has suffered though for the life of me I can't understand why this should be. There are no major stains or holes. The blanket is not square as the panels are not all of the same length. This is evident in photo number 2. In one corner there is a section where the color scheme veers more toward the pink. Honestly, I cannot tell if this was done by the creator ... moreor if it has happened due to fading. It can be seen in the bottom right of photo 2. These blankets can be used as rugs as they are quite durable and lay quite flat. However. Three sides have a 5" long self fringe and the top is plain with a hand stitched hem. There are a couple of very early tiny repairs, nicely done. Please see last photo.
