Here are a pair of pottery/ceramic tiles purchased at an estate sale. Each measures about 5 1/2" square and 1/4" thick. One shows a man walking; the other a man playing a stringed instrument. Perhaps a mandolin. No manufacturing mark on back, While we live close to the Mexican border, these do not appear to be Mexican in origin to us. We are thinking Eurepean, perhaps Eastern Europe or Spain. Anyone help with origin or age? They have obviously been removed from something as there is grout along the edges and some kind of adhesive on the back. Some small chips along the edges. Original age unknown. All tiles are in very good shape for vintage tiles, but each has small blemishes. You will see from full picture of all tiles that together they look fantastic! All were attached to kitchen walls with mastic/mortar that remains on back- see picture of reverse tile side. This mortar/mastic has minimally changed depth of tile. Such that an experienced installer should be able to install flat without issue. Each tile is hand-painted- look at the details and uniquenesses of each photo! They are 16 inches long by 4 x 5 inches wide inside diameter. They have copper straps nailed to them. Which I removed. Can sell the copper straps if interested. Update from fellow Ebayer, These are a transite. Mineral fiber cement with an asbestos content. They were made by John Mansville originally. The copper straps you refer to are called storm anchors and were there to prevent wind uplift.

Up for bids is a set of four vintage geisha tiles. Framed in a brass colored metal with two links and a loop on top from which to hang. Not sure why the pictures loaded sideways, sorry. Each plaque measures 6.25x9.50 inches, including the metal frame(but not the links and loops, which are another 2.25 inches. Offered is a lot of 148 vintage butterscotch bakelite mah jong tiles and a bag of plastic game piece markers. Each tile measures 1.25 inches tall by three-quarters of an inch long by almost half an inch wide from front to back. The set is in great used condition.The plastic markers are fairly fragile.I also see that about 22 of the mah jong tiles show discolorations on their faces. While about 30 show discolorations on their back sides.In many cases, the discolored tiles show front and marks, so these tiles were counted twice.I also see that the edges of these tiles show crazing-discolorations.Please see the pictures provided.Otherwise, I see no additional discolorations, stains, fading, cracks, breaks, signs of excessive use or abuse or damages of any kind on any of the pieces in the collection. A simple gambling game which consists of rolling dice and making or collecting payments in the form of chips. Each player has a row of numbered tiles corresponding to the possible outcomes of the roll of dice, except 7. Vintage Decorative Ceramic Tiles, Civil War Generals SHERMAN and STUART
This is a unique pair of vintage framed decorative ceramic tiles featuring American Civil War Generals. These tiles are rendered in fine WHITE ceramic and measure approximately 5.75” tall by 2.5” wide and are framed with overall dimensions of approximately 8” tall by 5” wide. One tile depicts a standing image of General Sherman above the words“Major General William Tecumseh Sherman” and the other a standing image of General Stuart above the words“Brigadier General James Ewell Brown Stuart” The frames are fine hardwood in a medium brown finish. The backs have brown paper dust covers and metal handing tabs. There are no maker’s marks. These were obtained in an estate sale lot and they are in superb condition with no stains. The first board is made of dark wood with a tile decorated with a wine bottle. It measures about 6" X 8" with feet on the bottom. The next is a large board with a chain to hang on the wall. 3 VINTAGE TILES WITH SHOOTING/ HUNTING SCENES These lovely period tiles are in good condition. I believe they at some point in the past were in a fire place as they have a yellow nicotine like hard film over areas of their surface. The other thing this could be is varnish from when surrounding woodwork has been painted in the past. This seems to come off just by rubbing with your nail and the scene beneath is untouched. A bit of time spent cleaning them would make a big difference to their appearance. They measure approx. 6 inches square. Two tiles read' Minton Hollins& Co.
