Circa ... more1860s-1890s. It is a brown relief tile from a fireplace. It features a pretty pinecone-like design. This tile bears an impressed circular insignia on reverse: MINTON, HOLLINS& Co. Inside of the circle is the number 2I2 with EB beneath. There is a P outside the circle on the right bottom corner and a X sign in the lower left corner. In 1845. Herbert Minton took Michael Daintry Hollins into partnership. And the tile-making side of the business became known as Minton Hollins& Co. Herbert Minton's successful experiments in making encaustic tiles during the 1840s( Encaustic tiles are ceramic tiles with a decoration made of different colours of clay inlaid into the surface. Removed from furniture which unfortuantely did not have the complete set one apparently damaged and so replaced so perfectly clean and with minimal marks much of which is due to the variabilities of manufacture at such an early date. Antique Aetco Trent Victorian Ceramic Art Tile Ultra Relief ! Majolica Rosette
Antique Victorian era ceramic fireplace tile more than likely made by the American encaustic tile company of Zanesville Ohio. Unmarked but American encaustic was known for dramatically hi relief tiles and this tile is about 1 1/2 inches thick at the center. Cream and caramel glaze the tile measures 6" x 6" x 0.5" thick at the edge and 1 1/2 inches thick at the center. I've never seen an American our tile this thick. It is in fairly good condition for it's age and from the back you can see it was a used tile that was taken off something. It still has a nice gloss to the front. It does have a lot of crazing and a chip towards the back of the tile that does not show from the front. General edge roughness. It measures 6 1/8" square and is approximately 1/4" thick. The sale is for this Isaac Broome designed tile. Broome was the premiere tile modeler in the US in the late 1800's. It is unmarked but a Trent Co. tile. It is pictured In Normal Karlson's book about American Art Tiles(a bible of tile collecting) Overall it is in good condition with some abrasions to the high points. It has a very desirable color glaze. It has been equipped to hang at a later date(see picture of back) but would have been used on a fireplace. It measures app 6 by 18 inches. Fantastic Victorian era art tile more than likely made by the Trent tile company of Trenton New Jersey or the American encaustic tile company of Zanesville Ohio. Many of the tile makers of the time produced tiles that were no more than 6" x 6" in size.Aetco. In particular, was known to produce large plaques such as this. A truly marvelous piece of turn of the century pottery. A neo-classical tour de force with rams heads. Swags, ribbons and a central, ornate urn/planter. Red wine glaze that pools deeper around the devices, highlighting them. 17-3/4" x 8-7/8" x just under an inch thick. Some chips on the right side as seen in photos.But overall the tile shows very well as the edge is clean all around. Needs a final cleaning. Outside of exterior terra cotta pieces. Elaborate neo classical design. Rose and flower festoons. Ribbons and bows, palm and medallions. Mauve/wine and baby blue over subway white. This is a two tile, repeating pattern. The glaze on the tiles with the right side of the medallion is darker, more noticeable in the red glaze. There is some slight size variance, as is often the case with Victorian era tile. Vintage Minton's Stoke On Trent Aesop's Fables Tile "The Lion and The Rat" Black
This is the second of three Minton's tiles I have listed this week. This one is from their Aesop's Fables series entitled"The Lion and The Rat. The tile is done in black and is a 6" x 6" tile. The piece is marked on the back as seen in the listing photo. The tile's edges are rough to the feel and there are a few issues that must be pointed out. First there is a 1/8" x 1/4" shallow flake off the right. Upper, edge of the tile which is shown by the pointer in the listing photo. Secondly, there is a very, very tiny flake off the lower left edge which is also shown in the photos. The corners on the back side of the tile are rounded due to wear and there are a couple of flakes off the side of the tile shown in the last listing photo. No cracks or lines. Estate found Antique 19th century English porcelain tile with Sheep in a farmyard. Made by Mintons China Works, Stoke on Trent. This tile is contained in an old wire trivet stand that is removable.
