7.75" Jug, White Stoneware, Gothic Details Relief, Charles Meigh, circa 1844
Size 7.75" hgih. White salt glaze, Here we have a very old stoneware jug with high relief gothic details made by Charles Meigh of Staffordshire England in the year 1844. The handle has a factory flaw on the bottom where it connects to the body. It looks like it has separated a little, other side is fine, see pictures of both sides) At the top of the handle there is a stress crack, the handle connects in a V only one side has the crack( see both pictures) Over all I would say the jug is in very good condition especially being that it is one hundred and seventy years old. This old Stoneware Hayner Whiskey Jug has been sitting in my father’s basement for at least the last 55+ years and was covered in dust and as you can see by the pictures it has not been cleaned. Other than the dirt the jug is in great condition with no cracks. Chips or repairs. It measures about 11 inches tall and is 6 5/8 inches in diameter at the base. The front reads HAYNER LOCKBOX 290 DAYTON OHIO and it has ES&B in raised letters on the bottom. 1920 brought in the beginning of Prohibition and the end of the Hayner Distilling Company and their Mail Order Whiskey business. This 2Gal. RI Merchant Jug is a real eye-catcher! I have always assumed that Horseshoes should face upward for Luck. And questioned why Edward Smith, a successful 19thC. Pawtucket Liquor Distributer, would use such a logo on his products. I then realized that the Horseshoe quickly orients itself in the proper manner when its contents are poured! A brilliant design, to say the least. In addition to the stenciled Cobalt Advertising, this Jug is also clearly impressed on the shoulder: F.T. WRIGHT& SON, STONE WARE, TAUNTON, MASS. with the 2Gal. capacity mark just below. I would date this to around 1870, based on the stamp. The front with an applied medallion containing the'WR' cypher for William III; the body with wonderful sgraffito stems with applied'Tudor Rose' flower heads hand painted with blackberry manganese under the glaze; Germany. Westerwald region, circa 1690- 1705. PRECIOUS AND FEW! Please scroll down for multiple photos) This is truly and exceptional and incredibly rare find for the serious Westerwald stoneware collector. It is very small. Rotund and extraordinarily cute, measuring just 5 ½ inches in height. The base diameter is 2 ½ inches. The great rarity of this beautiful jug is that it has the'WR' cypher on the front rather than a portrait medallion. I don't ever ... morerecall seeing a jug of this type before and I've seen a hell of a lot of good Westerwald pieces over the past 20 years or so. The medallion on the front of the jug is in the form of a laurel wreath with a crown at the top and the'WR' emblem underneath. The medallion is surrounded by the most beautiful sinuous sgraffito'stems' with'Tudor Rose' applied sprigs and tear-drop shaped'bulbs' We bought the jug originally in a damaged condition and had it restored by a professional restorer. The top ½ inch of the rim of the mouth. And the handle, have been rebuilt and there were one or two body cracks that have also been restored. It is now perfect to look at and an absolutely indispensable addition to any serious collection of Westerwald German stoneware. The two dark spots on the base are a soft substance which have been applied to protect furniture. Taking the restoration into account we are offering this wonderful jug of historical importance for a fraction of the price of an unrestored example. This is an extremely rare piece of art pottery made by the Martin Brothers- dating from around 1880-90.What makes this jug so exciting is that it has been personally signed by one of the brothers( usually pieces were marked using the all inclusive and various Martin Brothers logos) The jug is by Walter Fraser Martin.Of bulbous form with cylindrical neck and looped handle- made from their trademark saltglazed stoneware giving it a wonderful high gloss.Smooth exterior.Coloured in dark cobalt blues with lighter blues and browns.The central panel is decorated with birds among branches- two further patterned panels separate this from the top and bottom of the jug whilst the neck also has a patterned border. It dates to the early 19th century and measures roughly 9" high and 6" wide(7.5" with handle) It is in in overall good condition with and old hairline crack near the front. This is a good looking hardto find primative jug with the original wire and wood handle. The base is marked with the makers stamp and it says" MFG'D BY F.H.WEEKS Style xxx Patent Pending Akron. O. This looks to be a 2 piece with a tooled spout. nice designs. 8" tall. 7" wide. c.1860-1880 Fulper Pottery Jug This stoneware 2 gallon jug is attributed to the Fulper Pottery Works in Flemmington. N.J. and has a stylistic blue bird hand drawn in cobalt blue with fanned out tail feathers and berry twig below. Condition: the handle has three early breaks that were expertly reattached and one dimple/inclusion just above the tail feathers(appears to be as made? and there is no chips or cracks to lip or base or anywhere else and overall in very good condition and displays nicely. Presenting here for sale is a black mammy face jug. This mammy has a traditional Edgefield style face and is a functional whiskey jug. The scarf on her head is knotted just above her eyebrows. Her shawl is knotted between her breasts. Her skirt is tied with a bow in the back. The head scarf. Shawl and skirt are a very light grey-green. Her blouse, that has the sleeves rolled up, is a more vibrant green. She has her hunting knife and her gathering pouch hanging from her waist. She also wears a huge smile. She is 9.5" high and 9" across at the elbows. This jug is handmade of stoneware clay(no mold used) and glazed in a food safe glaze. It was fired in a high-fire reduction kiln to cone 10 bending. This jug is handmade of stoneware clay(no mold used) and glazed is a food safe glaze. It was fired in a gas reduction kiln to cone 10 bending. The jug was turned on the wheel and then the details if the devil were added. He has a frowning mouth. I am not sure if there is one out there that is even in the great condition this one is in. I can find very little information on one similar to this. The only other jug I was able to find was one that sold. I believe at an auction, that was missing its handle and a large chunk out of the base. This is a MUST HAVE for Bauer collectors! This beehive jug measures 17” tall x 11” in diameter. This jug would have been considered in MINT condition but recently the spout was chipped which measures about 1 1/8” in length. I do not believe the chip takes away from its value much.I am starting this auction at a low price because I want to make sure it finds a great home. Early 1900s Salt Glazed Stoneware Jug
This auction is for an early 1900's stoneware jug with a salt glazed. This jug was made around the first quarter of the twentieth century. I verified the date of this jug with Crocker Farmers via email. The jug stands approximately 9 1/2" high. This is a lovely piece for any stoneware collector and there are no dents or nicks on the jug. There are a couple of little chips on the bottom as shown in the picture. This probably indicates a 1 gallon size) There is writing imprinted into the stoneware above the blue cobalt writing. It is difficult to read-Union Pottery Newark. NJ MEASUREMENTS(all approx. 11 ½” tall and 7” wide. 25" diameter. Opening diameter 1" This 1 gallon jug was made for John W. Vogel& Son. Newark, NJ probably in the late 19th or early 20th century. CONDITION: Very good condition for its age. The blue writing has some wearing and scraping off the stoneware. A 1.5" thin hairline crack near the top of the jug that is not deep. My fingernail barely scrapes it. Please look at pic of this area. A few small chips around the top rim(see the photos) There are ... morea few small'pox marks' around the body of the jug. this is an exquisite very obscure vintage handmade stoneware pottery tea kettle pot. it has a beautiful salt glaze with a glossy grey and brown color. the spout is very rare and in the shape of a rams head. The contents of the kettle would pour out of his mouth, his eyes are cut out and has gorgeous curved horns. it also has a gorgeous full body ram finial on the lid. And a brown half circle handle. it is heavy and made with very thick material. it can be used. In good working shape, the inside is glazed as well and never been used. it measure 10 x 9 inches great obscure piece of stoneware. An ovoid jug standing 15 inches tall. It measures 5¼ inches in diameter at the base and about 9½ inches in the middle. It is marked: THOMPSON& CO/ 2/ GARDINER. Decorated in blue near the handle. A large shallow lip chip and some tiny base rim nicks. The base has hairlines and three hairline cracks extending vertically from the base.The vertical hairlines extend about 3 inches from the base.
