In the late 19th century. Wedgwood experimented with metallic plating of bas-relief stonewares and other dry-bodies. It consisted of an elaborate and tedious process and was designed to simulate polished silver and other metals. The undercoating– first layer- was of copper on the glazed ceramic and then silver was electro-plated over it. The experiment was an expensive failure and very few objects were made and put into the marketplace. Offered here is a traditional shape Etruscan Jug with classical bas-relief designs produced with this patina silver finish. The applied relief decoration appears as if gold-applied. But it is simply the result of polishing that ultimately wore off, quite evenly, the silver on the high points as shown, and thus exposing the copper underlay. This 19th century stoneware two gallon jug is decorated with a cobalt blue bird sitting on a branch with a number"2" stamped into the clay above. This jug came out of an attic in Quakertown. Located in Upper Bucks County Pennsylvania. I'm not sure of the manufacturer however one auctioneer I know said it may be from Fulper Pottery(New Jersey) I haven't researched this piece so you be the judge. This solid jug has a hairline crack(aprx 3 inches long) below the bird's head. To the left is a scratch or finger mark however it is glazed over, several small chips on top of the neck(where the cork goes) and one large chip on the back(aprx 2 inches by 1 inch) This old jug still displays well and looks really nice on a shelf. It is a 1 gallon shoulder/whiskey jug. It has the maple leaf logo on the front. The jug is about 10.5 inches tall and just under 7 inches in diameter. It was preowned but was very well taken care of. I see a few shallow chips on the front rim(where the white portion begins) There is a 3 inch rough section along the rim on the back, as well as a small hairline crack. There is a small spot on the mouth of the jar where it wasn't completely covered with the brown glaze. I believe any other imperfections I see are only production flaws. This listing is for: a salt glaze jug manufactured by the Macomb Pottery Company of Macomb. Ill. They were in business from 1882-1941 so this is a very old piece. This jug is in fair condition. It's quite worn and shows it's age. There are many scrat ches. Chips and some areas where the glaze has come off and is missing(created small holes in the top glaze) The bottom has quite a lot of scratches and chipping. For sale is an Antique North Carolina 1 Gallon Stoneware Molasses Syrup Jug. It has a Salt& Glass Glaze that gives it a glossy rust color. I will gate this jug to the turn of the 20th century mainly because of the glaze. The jug is marked with a stylized 1 and stands 11" tall and is about 8" in diameter. The jugs weighs in at 6 pounds and is in very good antique condition with no big chips or any cracks. There is a chip at the pour spout and a couple of flea bites on the edge. I show close-up photos of the spout because the area has a distinctive color that does not quite match the rest of the jug. It could have been reworked or repaired at one time. It stands a huge 15 1/2" tall and it is 9 1/2" across the bottom. There is a slight flake from shallow part of rim on very top, almost looks like it was fired this way. No chips, nicks, cracks, scratches or repairs. The graphics on the jug are in excellent condition. The jug measures about 7-3/4" in diameter and is 7-3/4" tall. Very Rare Turkey Droppings - Antique Salt Glaze Red Wing Stoneware Whiskey Jug
This is a stunning turkey droppings piece that is a rare. And hard to find, commonly thought to be a bee hive Red Wing piece. These pieces, due to the nature of their glaze, become" one of a kind" pieces automatically. Turkey drippings or droppings come from the kiln during the salt glaze days when rock salt was thrown into the kiln when the temperature was at it’s highest point. The rock salt crystallized and coated on the ware in the kiln(plus the kiln) with a salt glaze. After many firings the kiln became so coated with the salt glaze that the ceiling started to drip. When the dripping began to affect the quality of the ware coming out. The kiln was cooled and then cleaned of the excess glaze or salt film. This 2-gallon zinc-glaze beehive jug not only has excellent form. But also some great turkey droppings, indicating that it’s ... moreprobably a transition piece because salt glazing still coated the ceiling of the kiln and dripped onto the jug. This particular piece sold for more than $200 on eBay in January, but it’s likely it wouldn’t have topped $50 without turkey droppings. Vintage 12" Jug Factory Barrow (old Jackson) County Ga Stoneware Preserve Jar
This was purchased one county over from Barrow County. John Burrison in his book"Brothersin Clay" says that the potteries were around Statham in Barrow County which was a part of Jackson County until 1914.The potters had been trained in Edgefield and some went up to Gillsville. These potters were the DeLays. Dials, Fergusons, Hewells, Robertsons and others.It stands 12 1/4" tall, 5 1/2" from outside to outside at the rim and 7" at the base. Offered is a seldom encountered. 1905-1920 vintage, 2-color brown and cream funnel top/cylindrical base, half gallon stoneware jug that is imprinted'LACEY& ONEILL/ BIRDSBORO, PA. in black, within a stippled rectangle. Birdsboro is a town in Berks County Pennsylvania, located just south of Reading. The jug stands 9-1/2" tall and is very presentable and displayable just as it sits. It is very stable and solid. It bears two chips located at the top edge where its' beige body meets its' brown cone top. There is one chip located at its' base edge. There is a 3-1/2" long vertical hairline located at its' reverse body area. This appears to be a glaze hairline only, which does not extend into the stoneware body itself. Up for sale is this beautiful old 2 gallon salt-glazed stoneware jug. Believed to have been produced around the 1880's. It has no chips or cracks! The"s" and" j" shaped marks on the side are scuffs or rub marks. Not cracks. It's in excellent condition overall. I don't know if it was done on purpose or not. But the mouth is tipped to the right. Believe me when I tell you that if you slip your index finger into the handle and hoist it on the back of your arm. The mouth is perfectly po ised to meet your lips! This jug is in Excellent Condition with a few very small shallow minor chips around the outside and inside of the mouth's rim and 1 very small shallow minor chip just above the incised line at the bottom of the mouth. There are a couple of very small suface nicks on the front of the crock. 1 being in the cobalt blue design. You can refer to the pictures. There are no other chips, cracks, and or repairs. The jug measures about 6 3/4” tall and 5" in diameter. Not including the handle. The motto states: Bitter Must Be The Cup That A Smile Will Not Sweeten. The jug has a small piece missing from one of the applied leaves. Interestingly, a large glob of clay was left in the jug by mistake and fired with the jug and therefore cannot be removed. Since the jug is for display, I can't imagine why this would matter. There are no other faults or damage. Otherwise, there are no chips, cracks, crazing or repairs. The jug weighs 5 pounds packed.
