The salt glazing is superb with no blemishes or discoloration, and the deep blue stenciling is very crisp and displays beautifully. This jug was never in the ground and was more than likely found in an old basement cupboard, out building or barn back in the day. There is an old, thin and very tight non detracting hairline, that is short and close to the surface(see pictures) It measures only 2" long and is off to the side. There is one superficial shallow chip near ... morethe base that is barely worth mentioning. This jug'rings true' as it is very solid. It reads nicely on the jug with the deep blue lettering ~"THOS. Up for auction is an antique two gallon stoneware jug that has an ovoid shape with a cobalt blue decoration and an impressed maker's mark for Samuel W. Hurd of Peekskill. New York. It is 11 3/4" tall and the base diameter is 7 3/4" It has an attached handle. There is a cobalt blue decoration on the front of the jug and the handle is accented with the blue cobalt. It has an impressed"2" along with"SAMUEL W. HURD MANUFACTURER PEEKSKILL" There is an incised encircling line at the neck. The cork is on the inside of the jug. The condition is good with the exception of several very small nicks or chips at the mouth of the jug, and one 3/4" long chip plus multiple small chips at the base. This is a Large Jug that weighs 9.6 pounds and measures 14" tall by 9" wide at the base. This jug has an Unusual Look to it. It appears that the jug was painted red at some point and that paint has mostly chipped or fallen away. I have not attempted to remove the red paint. Up for auction here is a Western Stoneware 1 Gal Jug. The jug has a wire formed handle that at one time had wood on it. Their is one small chip where the wire handle is attached to the jug(see photo) other than that the jug has no cracks or chips. The cork looks to be original as it has not been remove from the jug in a very long time. It has all the normal glaze flaws in it. This is a very nice piece and is in very good condition for its age. Beautiful Antique Stoneware Batter Jug with Handle
This piece is lovely old jug that was used in the old country kitchen. It measures about 8" tall. The diameter at the top is about 3 1/2" I lobe the swirling incised decorations on the crock and the leave shaped handle holders. It has a nice brown glaze. The crock is in really good shape. It has a small chip on the top rim. One area on the bottom of the spout where the glaze is worn off, several small spots around the jug where the glaze has chipped off and the stoneware is visible and 3 larger chips on the bottom of the handle on the bottom of the jug(see photo) Please let me know if you have any questions. I really don't deal with jugs a whole lot. But this one really caught my eye. It really has that beehive shape to it. Especially since the bottom narrows down just like the top does. Most times it is just the top. There are two things that I will mention about it and you can decide for yourself with the pictures. Towards the bottom below the handle is a small dime sized piece that is chipped off a little. It does not go through and is just on the surface. But is there just the same and needs to be mentioned. The other one is on the handle where the thumb is placed. It is a different color than the rest. I am not sure if this was made like this to give the thumb a not so smooth surface for gripping possibly. It looks to have been made like this from the factory because the color closest to the spout bleeds over onto the lighter colored part. Regardless. Unique old jug. I was told that this if from mid to late 19th c. however I dont know. Nice dark color. Measures about 14.5"15" tall and about 9" across the bottom. There are some chips in the mouth. A minor crack, presumably from manufacturing on the base, and a minor ding with little cracks on a spot on the side, all detailed in the pictures. Antique? Alabama Brown Glaze Stoneware Crock Jug Pottery Antique? brown jug with handle. Crock pottery whiskey Measures 8 inches tall. 6-1/2 inches wide; 20" around. There are several"imperfections" in the glaze and surface of the jug. There are some"scratches" which might be a signature which you can see in the 2nd picture, near the bottom, about the middle. The cork is inside the jug; it is falling apart. The cork fell inside the jug when I tried to remove it to see what might be inside. There is chip out of the bottom edge- see picture 11. Next to last picture. Weight is 4 pounds and 1 ounce. Background on this jug- This jug belonged to my stepfather who passed away several years ago. He was born in 1914. He was making and selling moonshine at the age of 10- for a nickel a bottle(if I remember correctly what he ... moretold me) He was plowing a 40-acre field at the age of 11- with a team of mules. I don't know when or where he acquired this jug. It sat on his front porch for years. You can look at the pictures and make your own judgment about the age. He lived in the Sand Mountain area for a while in his youth so he could have gotten it there.

Here for your consideration is an antique American Folk pottery stoneware jug. This is a one gallon jug measuring 11" tall and is 7" in diameter at the base. This features a tan salt glaze finish with a slight"orange peel" surface. It also features a cobalt blue slip trail in a bull's eye floral design. It is incised with the maker's name. S.L. Pewtress& Co. Fair Haven, Conn. They operated from 71 Chatham Street in the Fair Haven district of New Haven, Conn. from 1868 to 1887. This jug dates to about 1870. This is in good condition with some character flaws common in the manufacturing of these pieces like glaze skips and small"grit" pieces. You are bidding on a old Albany Salt Glazed(dark brown) Approx. 1 gallon, sypup jug. It is somewhat unique in that the base is the same as diameter as the belly( 6-3/8" The photo incorrectly appears that it is a beehive shape. It measures approx. 8" tall with intact handle and spout. It has no defects except those made during it's manufacture such as small missing glaze stains and firing marks. This is a very nice piece of original stoneware with no chips. Cracks or checks.
