But slightly oblong in shape and the clay is slightly lumpy) 19th century 3 gallon salt ... moreglazed crock with bold cobalt leaf designs. It is sturdy, solid, and has a molded handle both sides. Due to age, the color of the clay has a slightly patchy appearance from discoloration. One of the handles has a few small flakes, but there are no other chips on the crock. There are three short cracks on the top edge that don't go all the way through the clay and look like they might be splits from firing. One very fine unnoticeable hairline on the top edge is slightly visible inside and out and is probably a true hairline from damage, but it is very difficult to see. All cracks are shown in the photos. There are two yellow streaks in the glaze on the front, also shown in the photos. They are part of the glaze and happened during manufacture. The crock measures 11" in diameter x 10 3/4" H. It will be packed securely in a double box and insured during shipping.

I was struck by the resemblance of this pitcher to one of the"fancy bottles" featured in a Western Stoneware catalog dated between 1907-1914. The carafe offered here is the one on the left. Western Stoneware Brown Speckle Carafe w/Lid About 1967. Western Stoneware made a line of heavy dinnerware. The glaze has a beautiful appearance on these dishes- each piece is hand-dipped, and the glaze is heavily applied. As with all Western Stoneware products, it is lead-free, making it safe for use with all foods and drink. Very handsome stoppered carafe from Western Stoneware. Has an almost Grecian flavor. With a ribbed pattern around the body and neck, squared handle. It is 10-1/2" tall at the spout, about 6" across at the widest point. A two gallon cobalt floral decorated stoneware crock from F. Woodworth in Burlington. VT. This is a very nice example in good condition. It is marked on the front"F. Woodworth, Burlington, VT" highlighted in cobalt. It has a nice floral decoration just below the maker's stamp, part of the design is somewhat faint. There is a tiny chip on each handle, a small chip on the back rim and several small chips on the inside edge of the area where the lid would have rested. I assume this jug was manufactured in the U.S.A. by any of several companies during the 1920s or 1930s. This jug has a complete and usable cork ring(the cork ring is the indented ring around the lip which will hold a string attached to a cork. This prevents the cork from getting separated from the jug) This jug has a cone top and does not have a shoulder. On this jug. The top of the handle is slightly above the opening(approximately 1/8 of an inch) This jug has a height of almost 5 1/2" inches and the bottom is approximately 3 1/2" in diameter. Probably not for whiskey or liquor, this Keeper still retains the very faint smell of dark molasses. This little 1Gal. is in great condition with no chips, cracks or repaired damage. The glaze shows a bit of minor, age-appropriate wear; and has a few skips and drips. Also, a thumbprint and some light fry on the handle and spout; and a 3/4" crescent-shape scratch near the base(see close-ups) Overall, an excellent 19thC. Slip-Glazed Beehive. Antique Stoneware Jug "2" Gallon N.Clark, Jr. Athens, N. Y. Cobalt Double Floral
Up for auction is a great old stoneware jug attributed to Nathan Clark. Jr. Athens, N.Y. who ran the pottery 1843-1891. Stands about 14" in height and the"2" stands for two gallon. The name and the 2 are washed in the cobalt blue and there are double flowers along with a kind of a"bee" below. There is a crack across the base of the handle. It is difficult for me to tell since the crack is so tight if it is a very good repair or a hairline during manufacture. I have taken a number of photos to attempt to show everything about the stoneware jug. Despite the crack, it is still a beautiful decorative piece of old stoneware. It will be shipped via UPS and double boxed for safe shipping.

This beehive jug measures 17” tall x 11” in diameter. This jug would have been considered in MINT condition but recently the spout was chipped which measures about 1 1/8” in length. I do not believe the chip takes away from its value much.I am starting this auction at a low price because I want to make sure it finds a great home. This very old heavy salt glaze stoneware 2 gallon cider. Whiskey, or moonshine shoulder jug has an old well-worn cork and accents of black, gray, brown, and orange on the upper part of the jug. There is the number 2 in cobalt blue and some slight spattering of the blue beneath it. There are indents, chips, and crazing present commensurate with its age and usage. The base is roughened and has discoloration. Please view all photos. It is about 13-1/2" high to the top of the jug and 8-1/2" in diameter. I bought this at a Pennsylvania farm auction. This little jug stands approximately 3.5 inches tall and has nice glaze and scratch advertising. It is also unusual as it has the cream color on the top and the brown on the bottom, plus these two tone jugs rarely had scratch advertising. There are really no negatives here, as it is about as perfect as you will find, having only a tiny nick out of the top rim. It displays beautifully and you will probably never see another one like it in your lifetime. You see Pennsylvania jugs from time to time but Sharpsburg jugs are pretty scarce. This little jug was made by the John Bauer Pottery from Louisville KY. John was a brother to J.A. Bauer Pottery the owner of the pottery in Paducah KY. This little jug is pre-prohibition and is beautiful considering it is over 100 years old. This will make a great addition to any whiskey jug. This turn of the century stoneware/pottery jug is quite hefty with a brown top portion and cream base with an attached handle. There are no cracks/chips that I could detect. This is a very nice jug for the collector in very good condition considering the age and use. It has a bit of very slight crazing but hardly noticable. Any flaws in paint or glaze should be considered a manufacturing flaw and not damage. I have provided some additional photos showing some of the detail. There is a partial gap in paint and glaze between colors seen in photos 1& 4 and as mentioned is a pottery flaw and not damage. Large stoneware jug in overall wonderful vintage condition. Showing wear commensurate to age. Jug is not marked. But it does have a cobalt blue pattern going around the top, and on the applied handle. There are a few repaired areas. That appear to have been plugged. Just below the opening. There is an incised ring pattern, as seen in picture#8. The jug has a hairline. But we don't think it goes through the jug(see picture#7) Chip present on the bottom edge(see pictures#10& 11) NOTE: We have lightly dry dusted the jug. But have done no major cleaning. The jug was stored somewhere at one time where someone was painting, and there may be a few small paint ... moredots that were missed during our cleaning, as well as some light soiling. This is an antique primitive beehive crock jug that belonged to my Mom. It appears to be very old but does not have any markings on the bottom. The handle is bent. But appears to be the original handle. There are a few spots where the glaze did not stick to the crock when it was glazed. There is a dark spot near the top of the jug. There are also a few chips around the top and bottom edges. The jug is about 10 1/2" tall and 25" around at the widest point. PayPal only please.
