We are listing this very nice 1860s two gallon handled salt glaze stoneware jug made for Curtis Pitman of Boston by an unknown potter. It is impressed on the front(and highlighted with blue glaze) CURTIS PITMAN. 154 FEDERAL ST, BOSTON. Curtis Pitman's tombstone in Boston says that he was born in 1816 and died in 1876. Based on the style of this jug it likely dates to the 1860s at the latest. The jug is 11.5 inches tall, 7.5 inches wide, and very solid(and heavy) The handle is nicely hand formed, the base has been wire cut, and it is in very good condition for a utilitarian piece of stoneware 150 years old. There are some very small surface rubs and the usual glaze flaws on this kind of stoneware, but this is a great old jug. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself. Up for auction is this nice early Jugtown saltglaze pitcher. It has the old quarter sized JUGTOWN stamp on the bottom. Pitcher was turned by Ben Owen. Probably in the 1930's, and has that"dog turd" thumb rest on the handle that he often used. The pitcher stands 6.25" tall by 5.5" in diameter. It's in excellent condition, with no damages or any repairs. It may or may not have had a lid, but none was found with it. Nice 1860s WH JONES & CO 153 BLACKSTONE ST BOSTON 2 gal. saltglaze stoneware jug
We are listing this nice 1860s two gallon handled salt glaze stoneware whisky jug made for W.H. Jones& Co. by an unknown potter. It is impressed on the front(and highlighted with cobalt glaze) WH JONES& CO. 153 BLACKSTONE ST, BOSTON. This firm was established in 1851 as an importer of wines and spirits, and it operated at this location into at least the 1870s. Based on the wire cut base and the nicely hand formed handle, this jug dates to the 1860s Civil War period. It is 11 inches tall, a little over 7 inches wide, and has a great patina. It is a very solid and heavy jug, but it does have the following flaws(or character marks if you prefer) there is an old chip off the back of the rim which is a little rough all around, there is an excess clay concretion on the back near the base(and some newer rubs spots in that same area) and ... morethere is an old hairline that runs down one side and across the base. Due to the locations of the flaws they don't greatly affect the visual display of the jug. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself. We are listing this very nice looking mid 1800s 2 to 3 gallon saltglaze stoneware crock. Which is impressed on the front? W ELDING& BELDEN, Brantford, Ont. I could not find a record of this company, but by the 1870s and 1880s there was a probable successor named Belden Brothers and Belden& Co. in Brantford. The crock is 10.5 inches tall, 7.5 inches wide, and looks fantastic. There is a small flake on the rim, a couple of hairlines near the base, and the usual minor rubs and glaze pops you see on these old functional crocks- but this is a great collector piece or decorator item. NC Saltglaze 2 Gallon Stoneware Jar Auman Or an Owen Maker EX COND!
Up for auction is this old NC Saltglaze Stoneware 2 gallon jar. I don't know who dun it. But they dun it well. Only marking is the curled 2 under one handle. The glaze is almost blast white, with numerous"pink spots" indicating the clay for it came out of the Mitchfield pit. This could be one of the Owen boys, or it could be a little later jar from the Auman shop. It stands 10.5" tall by 9.5" wide across the rim. It's just about perfect, save a small chip under the edge of one handle. No other chips, no cracks, no repairs done to it. We have several Southern stoneware pots listed on ebay this week, so please be sure to check them all out.
