Delft, manganese tiles ... moreare dated to around 1750. They make a superb set mounted in their frame. The ground is cream and design is in purplish brown colour. The scenes on the tiles are of the canal with windmill. Boats and farm or church with small designs in the corners. They are uniquely hand painted in this wonderfully naive style. The condition of all 3 tiles is particularly good for this age. There are a few frits and nibbles to the edge. Some crazing and the tile on the right is slightly brown on the top, this may be the result of old tobacco smoke. Each tile measures 13cm x 13 cm x 7mm(approximately) or 5¼ inches x 5¼ inches. The wooden frame measures just more than 17½ inches x 7½ inches. I have added more pictures to show the condition and thickness of the tiles out of the frame. I'm afraid the colour looks varied as I was having problems with my camera. Manganese is a mineral used since Egyptian times to stain glazes and bodies. The colour varies depending on the glaze. Lead glazes give a purplish brown colour. As with these tiles. Manganese mixed with iron in an alkaline glaze creates a rich black tone. Delftware tiles were very popular. Popular decorative motifs included landscapes and flowers. With smaller designs in each corner. In Britain early delftware copied the Dutch manganese palette. By the mid-18 th. century British delft was increasingly overlooked in favour of creamware and eventually porcelain. Bidders abroad please enquire for postage befor bidding. Born 1846, and was awarded for her Artistry& painted tiles by the time she was 17- 18 years old. She passed in 1901. Manufacturers copied her artwork onto many different items including tiles. This is a rather rare lot of 5 unique and old manganses Delft tiles featuring a nautical(ships) scene on each. Three tiles are framed and two are in very good condition. The remaining three have hairline cracks and crazing. Even so. It is hard to find these old tiles without missing pieces. Each measures 5 1/8” square and are about 1/4" thick. As you can see, all have been previously used and were salvaged. We purchased this lot approx 30 years ago at a antique shop in Europe and they have been in our smoke free home ever since. Estate Makkum Delft Tile
This lovely tile is from a New England estate. And that’s about the extent of my knowledge! The mark on the back looks like a partial imprint of the Makkum logo. But I must leave that up to the real collectors. If you are like me. You’ll just say“how pretty” The background is a very pale blue-gray with a basket of fruit in the center. With a few grapes scattered at the base. Each corner has a decorative design. I must leave it to you to decide condition from the photos. But I would be glad to answer any questions you may have! We present an original Delft Blue tile from Holland. The motif is floral. Notice the two insects. Or butterflies to the right and left of the flower. Nicely glazed surface(it needs a little cleaning) The background is off white with a bluish tint(stronger than in the photo) The clay is coarse and porous with a lot of mica(sparkling inclusions) No crazing. A couple of minute flea bites at the edges(prior to firing) and a larger flake at the lower left corner. On the whole. It is in a remarkably good pre-owned condition! There are no breakages. Or cracks that run through the fired clay. The tile is not stamped. But it bears a striking resemblance to two tiles by Tichelaar Makkum, that are ... morelisted separately. It dates prior to 1974. Please study the photos carefully before bidding. Because they are part of the description. It came from a Massachusetts home. It belongs to a large collection of Dutch tiles. Older HANDpainted and HANDmade DELFT TILE with UNICORN WESTRAVEN
Offered here today is an older DELFT TILE from the WESTRAVEN Company. Prior to De Porcelyne Fles taking over the company. It(Westraven) was well known for both it's tiles and it's very high quality screened ware(still to this day) They were top of the line in both fields. THIS tile dates from that period of time PRIOR TO it being totally incorporated into the Por Fles when BOTH HAND-made AND hand-painted tiles were still being produced(about 1980-85, I'd think) but at the same time they also screened some tiles. THIS tile was completely HANDmade and HANDpainted. It has a rich, full border(corner design) and is in factory perfect condition. The UNICORN has his head lowered with his horn touching the ground.a seldom-seen design. I believe that this was a special-order and not a general production piece. Notice the tiny"hole" ... moreit's NOT a hole, but a mark left by the spacers during the firing process, just like the original tiles of earlier centuries. All 4 corners have this mark and it shows that they were a special production. The tile itself is a little thicker and heavier than the factory pressed tiles. You don't find these types of tiles very often! THIS tile comes from my own collection and has a hanger attached to the back, so it can be displayed easily. I'm always glad to combine items, so check out my other listings. Good condition for a 300 year old plus tile. Approximately 5" square and nice tile with some imperfections.
