A rare opportunity to purchase a wonderful hand painted tile in pseudo delftware style. Made in imitation of an early English or Dutch delftware flower vase tile. Maker: H& G Thynne Ltd. Hereford. marked to reverse) Date: February 1933. marked to reverse) Provenance: from a large slabbed fireplace from a recently demolished house in Bournmouth. Size: 5" square(typical delftware size) x 3/8" thick(127mm square x 10mm thick) Condition: the face of the tile is in near-pristine condition. Almost as the day it left the factory. I had the luck of marrying a grand Dutch woman many years ago. Over the years. We've made many family visits to her five brother and sisters, most of whom live in Holland or Belgium. She was born and raised in Delft- many of her friends and relatives still live near there. If you have ever visited Delft(or for that matter. Amsterdam) I'm sure that you have been inspired by Delft Blue. A Little History? Delft Blue is a specific hue embeded in glazed ceramics from Holland. Originally. The style came from China in the 17th century with porcelain. However, the Dutch East India Company had troubles with maintaining this trade pattern, so the Dutch began to imitate it. They were so successful that the style was sold across Europe. At its height. There were 33 different factories in Delft. Today. Only the Royal Delft Blue company remains. ... moreThe subject of this Delft Blue impression is a painting by Willem van de Velde the Younger- considered to be the foremost master of commercial and warship paintings from the 17th century. Originally trained by his father. His paintings hang in the most prestigious museums and maritime collections of the world. This particular painting is of a Dutch Man of War and other commercial shipping. It hangs in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and is considered part of the masterpiece collection. Size and Particulars. The glazed ceramics of the mural are 6 inches square. The pattern is 4 across by 3 down. The size of the tiles assembled is 18" by 24" The grout is a pure white. The frame is 23.5" by 29.5" It is made a cherry and the corners have been rabbit joints for strength- the tile and cement board backboard are heavy. This is a 1600 century Makkum delft tile. The frame is oak and it is in excellent condition. Maybe you saw a segment on Antiques Roadshow recently on this kind of tile. I got this from an estate sale. I am not an expert whatsoever. However. After doing some research on this tile, I do believe it is an Antique Delft Tile. It was framed in this beautiful old wooden frame. My husband thought the frame was"old looking" and decided to take it out of the frame. The frame was"old looking"because it WAS OLD. Oh, needless to say, I wasn't happy when I saw what he did. Anyway, it is an absolutely beautiful tile. I hope someone out there would like to add this to their collection.

antique delft tile- children at play--NICE! APPEARS UNUSED!!!!!!
Offered a nice old delft tile depicting two victorian children at play. The tile is about 5" square and about 3/8" thick. It is in very nice condition. I don't think it has been used. I purchased it out of an estate along with another one that I have listed. The other one has been used and has some damage. I assume that they are the same age. I don't know a lot about these tiles so am not an expert in this field. Please view the pics provided and make your own determinations.
