Presented for your bidding consideration is a an exquisite pair of ceramic tiles by the world famous pottery company. MAW& Co. They are in very good condition and measure, without the frames, 6" x 20" The color of the glaze is rich and vibrant. They are circa 1880's. Please note that here is a small chip on Juliet's dress cuff. Considering the rarity of these tiles. It seems like a marginal problem. Maw& Co. The company was formed in 1850 by George Maw and his brother Arthur when they bought an ailing tile business in Worcester. They manufactured floor tiles and quickly ... moregained a high reputation for their encaustic* Mock-Mediaeval” tiles. However. They had to contend with the same problems as the company they had bought out– the local clays were unsuitable and materials had to be brought in at great expense from Shropshire. In 1852 they relocated to the Benthall Works at Broseley where they could make use of the clay as well as coal. The brothers soon opened their own mines. At first the company barely covered its expenses and full commercial production did not begin until 1857. A few years later encaustic tiles became the height of fashion. Maw& Co were the first to use six and more colours. Mosaic tiles also formed a large part of Maw's business. In 1862 a patent mosaic tile was introduced. At the same time George Maw was experimenting with majolica glazes and later on with faience. Transfer printed and hand painted picture tiles were produced as well as relief tiles and gilt ones with the entire design executed in gold. By the 1880’s Maw& Co had become one of the most influential and important tile manufacturers. The first one formed to illustrate, with the choicest examples, the earliest forms of Persian ceramics" Of our volume he further notes that it surveys"the magnificent embossed and lustred tiles which cover the walls of the mosques and palaces of ancient Iran" The Godman collection was formed in the last decades of the 19th century and was, as Solon hints, a grand assemblage, done full justice by Henry Wallis in his magnificent catalogs with their brilliantly ... morecolored plates. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 11.5"x15" Xxix pages + 40 full-page chromolithographed plates, numbered I-XXVI and XXX-XLIII(the omission of XXVII-XXIX being a printer's typo, as is explained in the plate index) Here we come to an anomaly- the book also had a 38-page essay on Persian tiles by Wallis, which is present in some copies of the book we have had, but not in others, including this one. Certainly it was supposed to be present, but its exclusion from about half the copies we have seen in the past 20 years suggests that there may have been some sort of problem at the binder back in 1893. In any case, this copy does not have the essay, and is priced accordingly. Newly bound in brown cloth. In new, pristine condition. CONDITION NOTES: About this book- Last year a longtime colleague in Spain. Who knows of our interest in this sort of book, emailed me and said he had found 2 unbound examples of this book wrapped in old paper, looking as if they were bound for the binder but never made it there. We bought them from him, and sent them to our own binder who bound them into hardcovers, as they were meant to be. We offered the first example in our Ebay store

These 6 beautiful pinwheel glass luxfer tile came out of a store front in Richmond Indiana i removed thim my self. These glass tiles were set in zink trim. These tiles measure 4" dy 31/2" with a wonderful swirling graphic floral design. Would be great for arts and craft projects. Art pieces made with this tiles would be beautiful and valuable. These glass tiles are clear. The tiles have been cut down to 31/2" by 4" Tile were window end pieces.

Pair of Round Antique Ceramic Tiles - Rare!!! Encaustic ???
Fantastic pair of very early Ceramic Stove Tiles- May be American Encaustic? Olive Green Glaze. expected crazing in both tiles. male tile has chip on lower edge(see picture) Original condition with hangers. Each tile roughly 4 1/4" in diameter. There are some markings on back but hard to read. Please ask questions if you have them.

Antique Lot of 2 Porcelain Italian Tiles Hand Painted Italy vintage architecture
This auction is for a lot of 2 antique tiles. I was told from the previous owner that they were from her family and were brought over to the US from Italy. She said they came off of a building maybe from inside a building in Italy but were at least 100 years old. That is the story I was told. I would say they do have some age and they appear to be hand painted. One has cracks and has been glued back together. Not the best job but it is holding. Each measures approx 5 inches by 5 inches.
