Decorative Victorian Tiles Framed Antique Winged Cherub with Cornicopia Wreaths
These tiles were purchased from a dealer at an antiques show at Pier 90. New York City. I was told these were British from Victorian times and were found in South America. These looked very familiar to me and suggested the food court at Harrod's London. I framed the set but could not find a reference in my books or on the internet. The subject of an angel holding draping cornucopia is similar to decoration at one of the food courts at Harrod's but is not exactly the same. There were no manufacturer's marks on the back. This group of six is probably a section of a frieze that circled a room. The subject, a winged cherub or angel with various foods falling out of draping horns probably decorated a food hall or restaurant. The cherub is well defined and the foods are easily recognized. While the cherub is not classically handsome ... morethe pose and deep relief is interesting. The frame complements the tiles and the assembly displays well. The assembly is heavy at 11 pounds and the frame measures 21 1/4 inches by 15 1/2 inches. These tiles are apparently rare but are strongly evocative of another time and place and would enhance a collection or decorate an eclectic room. Any clues to the history of these tiles would be appreciated. Shipping with insurance. This is a nice pair of Old Architectural Salvage Majolica Pictoral Tiles. They are 6" square. Both have some edge chips and wear you would expect on these type of tiles. These have a Majolica Glaze. They are both Heavy and weigh over 1 pound each. The mottled Green tile features a Flower Urn and Scroll Motif. And is 1/2" thick. The Solid Green one features a Mandolin with Fruit and Flower Baskets, and is just a little thinner then 1/2" thick. I get the impression that these are Italian in origin, but I don't know for sure. The Mandolin Tile is marked with a"P" on the back, the other tile has no markings that I can see. These are wonderful old tiles which would look great in a fireplace surround or any other project. Page 111) Very Interesting design from anonymous artist over 6x6 tiles that give a beatiful decorative effect. This design was used from 1630 onwards during the whole of the 17th Century. There are not a lot of different Portuguese designs that have 8 different tiles and these are amongst the most beautiful compositions to be used on large walls. On my trip to portugal in 2011. I made pictures(last two pictures) of this design in a Church in Obidos and the Library in Porto were a fine collection of tile panels is on display. These tiles were used to cover walls from chapels and churches and a large quantity of these tiles works very decorative.
