It is a wood structure trunk and frame with smooth me tal(black) and woven pattern metal riveted overlays with beautiful beading to ta ck in metals and curved and straight gorg eousl y grained wood slat s. Here's what I stated about it s condition: Metal overlay surfaces have been repainted and restored. Some scratches and scuffs marks on beautifully grained wood slats. Leather handle missing on left side. Flip up side locking latches both flip up into locking position. But only one catches to keep it lock closed and the other is missing its catch. Center locking latching closes in position but does not lock and there is no key. Interior lining shows foxing and staining and has some t ares due to great age. But smells clean with nice scent like cedar inside. Truly a rare beauty of extra large size that has great looks and craftsmanship on evident in these earlier era pieces of exceptional beauty. PICK-UP ONLY! A rare. Old, authentic six(6) board blanket chest found in South Carolina. Based on the construction and the rose-head nails, the chest(blanket box) has been dated at around 1790. The boards are made of pine and in surprisingly good condition. There are a few signs of wear. Such as some of the trim is missing from the bottom and top, the locking mechanism is missing and one of the strap hinges is not attached. Also, the till is missing. The hinges are hand made(forged) individually by a blacksmith. The original nails are also individually made by a blacksmith, there are some other nails that have been added later, some for the purpose of attaching some sort of lining, possibly, most of the original nails are in place, I took a photo of 2 of the rose head nails that were in the bottom of the box, one of them appears to be for ... morethe loose strap hinge. There are at least two modern screws that I found. One was put in one of the hinges and another was put on the bottom board to help secure it. The chest is very sturdy and strong. not rickety at all. You can sit, or even stand on it(not that I would) I am asking a fair amount for this very old work of art and important piece of Americana, but I will entertain all reasonable offers. As for shipping and delivery; I am not prepared to ship this large box. With a width of over 42 inches(height and depth are both around 17 1/2" I do not want to try shipping this. ANTIQUE BLANKET CHEST FROM LATE 1700s You are bidding on an antique blanket chest from the late 1700s. Which is in very good antique condition. To the best of our knowledge this chest was made in Bucks County, PA. It is entirely made from 6 boards. Is dove-tailed, and has early square nail and wood peg construction. The chest is 45 1/2' long x 18 1/4" wide. It is 20 1/2" high. It has a 15 1/4" high interior and stores quite a bit. The wood has a nice patina and a lovely feel. We do not have the key. We are selling because we are moving. It has been in a smoke free home.

Painted Oak coffer c1836 This is the best'ships Masters' captain or owner) coffer we have seen in the last 30 years. From the historic port of Nantes it is constructed of fine oak rather than the typical pine. The decoration is original and untouched and depicted garlands of flowers with two delightfully naïve canary or oriole type birds. It is impossible to pinpoint its history. They were typically commissioned by ships captains or owners and are usually painted though I have never seen illustrations of such a romantic example. The inference is that it is a marriage piece with the inscribed date that of the union. One can guess it was a gift from a mariner/owner to his bride. ANTIQUE SOLID OAK CHEST TRUNK COFFER, EARLY 1700’s
This antique solid oak chest/trunk/coffer came into our family when it was purchased from an antique store in Summerland. California back in the mid 1980's. It was sold to us with the provenance that it is from the early 1700's and was a ship captain's chest/trunk/coffer and was from England. Condition as shown in the pictures is as we received it and it has been well cared for since it came into our hands. It has the original hand forged iron hardware and does have the original working lock and key. The construction is with wood pegs and the main box is made with one piece oak planks, with the front and side decorations placed over that. Overall dimensions of this piece are: approximately 48" long, by approximately 24" deep, by approximately 24" high. Considering that the planks used in this piece are all straight ... moregrain with no knots, it is quite possible the tree the wood came from was very old itself. Oak Carved Inlaid Antique 1700's Swedish Dowry Chest or Trunk. This magnificent 1700's hand carved oak dowry chest from Sweden has arches surrounding ebony inlaid marquetry. The finish is in excellent condition. Preserving mars, stains and various restorations over the centuries, see photos. Waxed and buffed. Only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain the antique patina. Hand wrought iron handles and hinges are original, the giant lock has a key but does not latch the lid. This historic heirloom trunk would have descended with the daughters of a family. Measurements are 36" long. 22" deep and 23" tall. Antique Coffer Chest Cira 1700.Brought from Europe by an old friend.Purchased in Denmark many years ago. Hand carved.Carved markings in left and right corners for owner.Appears of English design. Needs Miscellaneous repairs because of age. 55" Wide-22" Deep- 30" High. This is a completely pleasing old coffer chest. Most of it is early 17th century. It is almost certainly English, Jacobean period(Charles I) but there are losses, additions, alterations and replacements. Not too bad for this type and age of piece, so that sounds a lot worse than it really is. Coffers were richly ornamented chests. The interior accessed through the lid, strongly made and with concealed hinges, and used for storing valuables. The carving on yours is a mixture of'gouged' and'modeled' ornament. Very typical of the period. For instance ... morethe lunette pattern along the top rail(above the doors) is an example of gouged carving and the vertical fern pattern up the stiles(the corner posts) is an example of modeled carving, as of course, is the carving on the doors themselves. What is remarkable about this chest is that it has the original owner's monogram and date. Top left are the initials"ANB" and top right the date. 163? which conforms nicely with the period of the decoration. The reason the last number is missing is that the sides were once paneled and the facing edge of the paneling abutted the stiles at the front and would have provided a space for the last letter and completed the edge of the rising fern pattern to match. So what are the alterations: It looks like the top is original. You can see the individual adz marks in the wood on the underside. It looks like it was hand hewn from a single balk of timber. Originally. It would not have had cupboard doors, just two fixed panels. I am not absolutely certain the door carving is original. Many of these had fanciful Victorian additions. C. 1775-1800 Item# 130002EEP16 This is a well worn and nearly untouched American Pennsylvania Chippendale Blanket Chest over Two Drawers. The interior of the lid covered in a fine woven green textile embroidered lower right"A.M.M. 1779" Likewise, the bottom of the inside of the chest bears the very faint initials and date"A M M 1779" these difficult to capture accurately with the camera and hard to see also with the eye. The underside of the lid of the till is inscribed in pencil"Hannah Britton" in a script that would suggest a somewhat early inscription by someone who owned the chest at one point. Crafted entirely of tulip ... morepoplar. Each surface of the case is crafted of a single solid unjoined board painted with a heavily oxidized brown streaked paint. The dovetails that join the case stretch from the top to the bottom of each toe, the feet becoming an integral part of the form, these well preserved and fully original. The molding around the lid, the midsection and the base are applied in the same manner, each with tiny wooden pins hammered through at regular intervals. The pair of drawers both bear pairs of replaced hardware, these inserted into the same original holes, both locks appearing to be fully original. The drawer frame is dovetailed front and back, the bottom heavily chamfered into rabbets on either side and nailed at the back in the typical manner. The interior of the chest has a later stain. While the 18th Century blanket chest is a very prevalent form. These are regularly refinished and rarely retain the original oxidized surface- even fewer also retain numerous matched inscriptions, dated and with some prior ownership inscribed on the interior. Well preserved in every way, this piece is untouched for the most part, of a desirable medium size and sturdy and strong in every way. These

Founding member of the Museum of Southern Decorative Arts, Winston Salem, and antique dealer/ appraiser from 1962– to present. The chest has a bold crown mold. Over six graduated drawers. The drawer fronts, crown mold, and feet are tiger maple, with straight grain maple sides. The chest is raised on original bracket feet with spurs. The case of the chest is dovetailed together as well as all the drawers. The hardware is of a later date, but is the correct style. The chest is well proportioned. The chest has been refinished at some point, but retains a nice mellow color. Very little damage, just on some of the iron and I have the small the piece that is missing from the left bottom, it needs to be reattached. No key. A large 18th century marriage chest. Ornately carved and dated"1733" with pegged construction. The measurements are approximately 27" tall, just shy of 58" wide at the widest point(which is the bottom) and 28" deep at the deepest point(which is the bottom) Though the European influence is apparent, we really do not know the region of origin or the maker of this piece. There is a decorative carved block of wood which has been lost(front upper left corner as you face the piece) The inner till box inside the chest has also been lost. The piece of wood composing the top of the chest has split, as have the hinges(please see photos) The locking hardware and mechanism has also been removed. The pegs holding the lid together are a bit loose, so the lid should be lifted with care. 18th century antique trunk deer hide cow animal hide dome traveling chest EB
Late 18th century deer or cow hide covered some top wooden trunk or chest. Adorned with breads studs and donning the initials E.B. Just amazing piece of history. Could be fixed up or appreciated for what it is! Unusual to see paper lined inside so well intact especially with original tag on the inside describing some maker of some elements of the trunk- Sam L. Ash who I had read about once being well renowned engraver of the last quarter of the 18th century. This trunk does have condition issues. Antique 1790's Carved Figural Trunk Coffer Mule Chest Dovetails Hammered Nails
Original lidded coffer wood trunk. Circa 1790's. The origin is probably English. The trunk measures about 26 1/4" wide(side to side) x 13 1/2" deep x 15 1/2" tall, the box is 13" tall without the foot skirt. Highly ornate hand carvings with figural bust- very detailed. The single board lid's side pieces are attached by ten large hand hammered nails with two additional nails holding the lock hasp. The exposed nail heads are 11/16" wide. The metal lock hasp is hand hammered with rivets. The metal lock plate is hand hammered. The side pieces are attached by large dovetails. The footed skirt appears to be original to the trunk, but I am not positive. There is a modern repair to the bottom leg in one place. Please note the large and unusual nail head that attaches the bottom skirt to the trunk box. The chest is ... morein very good antique condition with numerous signs of wear and age. Beautiful large heavily carved gothic trunk. Purchased several years ago from a local antique store who stated it came from England from a Catholic church. We had it appraised at Palmer Wirfs. The appraiser said it was very plausible it did come from a church and believed it held religious icons. It was appraised for 4500.00 to 5500.00 It has a seam down the very middle of the chest and a handful of small knicks but I would say is in good condition for its age. Antique Deer / Pony Skin Domed Top Studded Travel Trunk Chest c. 1800
A stunning antique domed top travel trunk dating from circa 1800. This was made to be used as a travel trunk and would have sat on the back of a coach and horses. Of wooden construction. Covered with deerskin or possibly pony skin with leather studded detail and iron strapping over all edges. Much of the hair is gone from the skin but what remains is a reddish brown colour. The skin is present throughout. In areas on the sides and back it is rather rippled I think there would have been initials in studs on the top either side of the studded diamond shape. The old holes are just visible and I think say MJ. Parts of the iron strap work are heavily deteriorated. Particularly on the top surface which would have been exposed to the elements. There are small areas of the leather strapping which are missing too. The two iron carry handles appear ... moreoriginal. There is a lock plate to the front with a second plate below it. The lock is present but there is no hasp or key. Internally the timber seems sound. There is damage and wear around the hinges. But support is given by the leather straps inside which take pressure off the hinges. The base has two timber feet which run the full width front and back. There is wear to the corners of the front one and some old worm damage. This has been treated for precaution and is not active. Measures: 67cm x 42cm x 43cm high This is a great period piece full of character. Which has obviously had a long history of use. I have tried to describe all it's wear which is all consistant with great age. Please feel free to ask any questions or request any specific photos. Antique Late 18th Century Fancy Cow Hide Chest Carriage Trunk Brass Monogram NR
Up for your consideration is this late 18th century/early 19th century cow hide covered trunk or chest. This early chest still has its original hand forged iron hardware. The outside hide has mostly shed away its original fur leaving a very nice patina and grain like texure. We do see some fur still left under the original brass tacks lining this chest and spelling C. W. C. on the top of the lid. The original ornate leather trim is still in tact. We do notice this truck still has is original interior paper lining. 18th Cent. Antique Chippendale Silver Gun Bench Chest Stand Mahogany campaign
Up for consideration is a very rare Antique Chinese Chippendale Cabinet possibly on a later stand. It measures 16 inches deep by 22 1/2 inches in height by 33 1/8th wide. The interior looks like it was fitted at one time. The bottom board of the chest is softwood. It has some iron handles that are heart shaped on the sides. Probably original brass key escutcheon on the front with wonderful original old staining and patina. The top has somewhat of a Pagoda Shape and there are 2 holes drilled and plugged possibly for decorative plate or handle. Not sure if it was a gun pistol or arms cabinet. For silver or. that has been later converted into sort of storage bench. The legs are chamfered on the inside corner meaning the 90 degree has been shaved down making the corner a smooth flat surface. Nonetheless a very handsome piece. The lock mechanism ... moreis intact as well as upper piece.on top no markings on the lock. There is contemporary material covering the upper interior portion of the lid. 18th century Antique Blanket Chest - GRAIN PAINTED - PA - Dome Trunk untouched
You are bidding on a 18th century"immigrant trunk. It is in great. Original condition. The trunk dates to the 18th century. I have had two of Rhode Island's highly respected colonial antique dealers examine the chest, and both have confirmed my approximation of age. In fact, one antique furniture expert(with a Ph.D. in history) just today, after examining the trunk for 30 minutes, said it is possible that the trunk dates to the mid, or even early 1700's, making it a full 300 years old. But I will err on the side of understatement, and simply say the trunk is 18th century. The expert was very impressed with the shape and character of the hand-forged hinges. And in particular, was effusive in his excitement with regard to the quality of the hand-forged locking mechanism(Please compare this latch/lock with the lock on the $45,000 ... moretrunk currently on eBay) It still closes with"vise-like" strength. And we both marveled at the key.which appears to be original to the locking mechanism. Can you imagine that?nearly 300 years old, and still with the probable original key. I can't go a year without losing a key. With regard to the paint: neither the two colonial America antique dealers. Nor myself, can say with absolute 100% certainty that the paint is original to the piece. Though, after examining the trunk very closely.front, back, sides, top and bottom.we could find not a thing that points to anything other than original paint. It is simply extraordinary to find a piece of this age with such deep, rich color. So I am going to err on the side of understatement, and simply say very old paint. Most probably original. With regard to the trunk's origin: Years ago. When I purchased the trunk at auction, the auctioneer had described the trunk"as found in Berks Co. Pennsylvania.
