In Search of England: Journeys into The English Past by Michael Wood. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 336 pages. Publisher: University of California ... morePress; 1999) England is the birthplace of many immortal legends told around the world: King Arthur and Camelot. The Holy Grail, Robin Hood, the mysterious Isle of Avalon. But are these famous stories based on historical events and actual people? And what do they tell us about the character and origins of the Anglo-Saxon world, a culture that helped shape American identity? In his absorbing new book, Michael Wood examines the roots of English history. Peeling back the layers of literary and oral material that have accumulated over the ages, he offers a fascinating series of rich stories; part history, part myth; that, directly or indirectly, touch on questions of English history and identity. He looks back at the legends surrounding Alfred the Great, King Athelstan, the lost library of Glastonbury, and more. Wood's emphasis is the Early Middle Ages. And the first two sections of the book offer deep excursions into particular moments in the history of that era. In addition to recounting some well-known legends, Wood considers the manuscripts and other primary sources of historical information on which they are based, assessing the validity of existing documentation, fleshing out historical contexts, and considering the treatment throughout history of these stories by famous writers, poets, and moviemakers. In the third part of"In Search of England" Wood writes about places that illuminate interesting aspects of early England: Tinsley Wood, near Sheffield, which has been claimed as the site of Athelstan's great victory against the Celts in 937; a farmhouse in Devon which has been occupied since Domesday and possibly long before; and the village of Peatling Magna in Leicestershire, scene of an extraordinary confrontation with King Henry III in 1265. These are the places and events that offer a complementary version of the history that is discuss

Ancient Prehistoric Stone Age Neolithic Flint Danish Dagger Scandinavian
A beautiful. Extremely rare and well provenanced neolithic dagger, dating to approximately 2300- 2000 B.C. and found in Scandinavia. This beautiful chip stone tool was made from a large piece of flint. Broken down and then chipped into form, the attractive surface flaking was created by the use of a soft hammer, likely made from bone, or antler. Beautiful stitching marks, clearly showing where each chip was removed by the ancient knapper. The emergence of flint daggers in late neolithic Scandinavian cultures is seen as a fascinating response to new technology being used in the production of bronze daggers in central Europe. From the 3rd millennium onwards. This new metal weaponry clearly made an impression on the surrounding cultures of this period, who began to make flint copies, and who's influence can be seen through their stylistic ... moresimilarities. This fascinating early flint implement. Dates to the north-west European Neolithic period(approx 4000-2000 B.C. This period saw the dawn of civilization, when Early man was leaving the Hunter-Gatherer lifestyle towards a more sedentary, farm-oriented existence. This transition is one of the overwhelming achievements of man, enabling food surplus and the rise of civilization. Length: 4 3/4 inches. Condition: Good. Tip and handle of dagger broken, old collection label, likely bearing the find site, still attached. Provenance: An extremely well provenanced piece. From the collection of James Curle(1862-1944) of Melrose, Scotland, and thence by descent. Although a lawyer by profession, Curle was an accomplished amateur archaeologist and his name remains one of the most famous in the field of Romano-British Archaeology, having excavated and published extensively in the early 1900's. From 1888-1903 Curle acquired the most magnificent collection of Nordic antiquities outside Scandinavia, eventually selling most of his pieces to the British Museum in 1921. The Curle collection in the British Museum has been the subject of numerous publications and remains an important
Neolithic Danish stone age thick necked axe, ca. 2000-1500 BC
Neolithic Danish thick necked axe. Ca. 2000-1500 BC Weight: 390 grams. Len gth: 15 cm. Width: 5 cm, height: 2.5 cm Th ese thick necked axes came into use in the single grave period and up to the beaker culture and dagger time(dolktid) This axe. Polished on the front and back, unpolished on the sides, has a real marble-like feel about it. It has lovely patina. Super high gloss. It has damage on the cutting edge. But not enough to detract from the beauty of the piece. This is a working axe. So of course work-re lated scars occur. T o my mind these scars are perfectly respectable. But of course that is a matter of taste. This axe was found by my husband in Halk(south-east Jutland. Denmark) on a rainy day in December.

Neolithic Danish flake corn sickle. Ca. 3500-1000 BC We ight: 61 grams. Length: 12.4 cm. Width: 3.5 cm, 1.5 cm thick This so called ¨heavy flake corn sickle¨ is a beauty. It has got a lovely golden patina and it is in absol utely perfect condition. I can't nail its age down. But i t probably is from the single grave culture. This type of corn sickle was used right up to the youn ger bronze age. This corn sickle was found in 1895. But it is difficult to read the find place. It is from an old collection.
Mesolithic / neolithic Danish 14 flake tools of the island of Moen (N/W Denmark)
Mesolithic/ neolithic Danish flake tools of the island of Møn Weight: 132 grams. The longest tool is 8 cm. The shortest is a 4.5 cm flake scraper. This is a selection of 14 flake tools of the island of Møn. I'm having a bit of a clear out of odds and ends. I'm getting fed up with having boxes of beautiful stones. Never seeing the light of day. So I'm offering you a great collection of flakes. It is impos sible to put ages or uses on all these tools. From as early bromme cu lture. Back in the 10000's BC up to the bronze age. The wh ite patinad flakes are coast finds. The salt water gives them this colour. The blue and the gre y t ranslucent are field fi nds. In the collection are small corn sickels. Flake scrapers, p ier cers and blades. What more can I say. A nice addition to anyones collec tion.
Neolithic Danish stone age lance formed dagger, ca. 2200-1800 BC
Neolithic Danish lance formed dagger. Ca. 2200-1800 BC Weight: 50 grams. Length: 12.3 cm. Width: 2.5 cm, 0.75 cm thick So. Here is a lovely and interesting piece. It has lo st its tip. But j udging by the patina I would say this is an ancient br eak. Nicely knapped and beautiful brown patina. The handle is quite interesting. It seem s to have been knapped to make a firelighter/st rike-a-light. The k napping also is worth noting. It ha s got a lovely stitch down both sides, which has been ground sli ghtly and one of the faces ha s been polished down. It is a great study piece and although I w ould never do it myself. This dagger could eas ily be re novated. This dagger was found in south Sjælland(east Denmark) It is part of an old collection dating back to the 1840's.

Ancient Prehistoric Stone Age Neolithic Flint Chert Danish Axe - 2000 BC
A beautiful neolithic polished stone axe. Dating to approximately 2000 B.C. and found in Scandinavia. This beautiful stone tool was made from a large piece of flint. Broken down and then chipped into form, remnants of attractive surface flaking remain in areas of the axe which are not so highly polished. Neolithic Danish thick necked axe, Single grave, V-formed type, ca. 2000-1500 BC
Neolithic Danish thick necked axe. Single grave culture, V-formed type, ca. 2000-1500 BC Weight: 79 grams. Length: 12.25 cm. Width: 5.50 cm, height: 2.75 cm These V-formed type axes are from the late Single grave period. This is a beautiful example. The lovely dark brown colour often occurs in axes found in the Vildemose area. This axe has a wonderful patina and shows a really advanced knapping technique. I.e. the zigzag edge. This is a working axe and it has been retouched in ancient times, but that takes nothing from the beauty of the piece. a1.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk.rp*3Ad%60%3Ea1%3E-13f9374ce75-0xfb-

Ancient Danish Stone Age Neolithic Type III Flint Dagger - Gotland
A beautiful. Rare and well provenanced neolithic type III dagger, dating to approximately 2100 B.C. and found in Gotland, Sweden. This wonderful prehistoric stone tool was made from a large piece of flint. Broken down and then painstakingly chipped into form, the attractive surface flaking was created by the use of a soft hammer, likely made from bone, or antler. Beautiful stitching marks run along the tools edges, showing where each tiny chip was removed; evidence of the extreme skill of the ancient craftsman. The emergence of flint daggers in late neolithic Scandinavian cultures is thought to be a fascinating response to new technology being used in the production of bronze daggers in central Europe. From the 3rd millennium onwards. This new metal weaponry clearly made an impression on the surrounding cultures of this period, who began ... moreto make flint copies, and who's influence can be seen through their stylistic similarities. Length: 5 1/4 inches. Condition: Good. Tip of dagger broken. Old collection label bearing'Gotland' likely the find site) still attached. From 1888-1903 Curle acquired the most magnificent collection of Nordic antiquities outside Scandinavia, eventually selling most of his pieces to the British Museum in 1921. 5500Y.O: WONDERFUL AX 103mms DANISH STONE AGE NEOLITHIC FLINT MEGALITH GRAVE C
DANISH STONE AGE ARTIFACTS BY PALATINA AUTHENTICITY GUARANTEED Description"Thin Butted Ax( Axe) Type V" Length is 103 mms. Wonderful marble-like patinized flint with fossil includings! Belonging to the later part of Early Funnel Beaker Culture. The TRB I/Phase C, also called Dolmen Period(Megalith Tomb Culture) 4000-3400 bc. The Neolithic Funnel Beaker Period(4000-2800 BC) Agriculture and animal husbandry were introduced in Denmark c. 4000 BC. Wheat and barley were grown and oxen. Sheep, goats and pigs domesticated. Large parts of the land were cultivated during the oldest peasant culture, 4000-2800 BC, and the earliest farmers were energetic builders. They constructed large assembly areas surrounded by moats and palisades like the one found near Sarup on Funen. They also built the oldest stone burial monuments, the dolmens and ... morethe passage graves, many thousands of which have been preserved in Denmark. Flint mines were opened and a whole new industry emerged which specialised in the production of elegant, polished flint axes. Large numbers of offerings have been found, including clay pots, flint tools and amber ornaments, and there is evidence of human and animal sacrifices. The first metal was brought into the country from Central Europe in the shape of simple ornaments and flat axe heads made of copper. Thin-butted flint axes. Possesing gently convex sides and edges, and often only slightly curved blade and edges sloping evenly to a broad thin butt; the cross-section of the primary type is therefore a gently rounded rectangle, though some examples possess so narrow edges that the cross-section becomes a pointed oval. This axe is the characteristic work-axe of the Early Neolithic period and a very large number of speciems is known from settlements, dolmens, earth graves and votive deposits over the whole country. They are normally 10-20 cms. long, though the largest measure up to 46 cms. Many speciems are considerably shorter than their original length as a result of use and resharpening; This is espec
