Approx 250,000-40,000BP( 4 inches approx) With amazing flaking and a wonderful organic white patina caused by thousands of years of climate and exposure change. This is a very rare example! There is a notched area on the bottom that exposes the old original darker flint. A great sign to its authenticity. The typology is directly related to the classic European Mousterian tools but made by the Mousterian of North Africa. This tool belonged to a North African collection formed around 1967. The dorsal side has an off set flat platform to one side for the palm when using it as a side scraper. The ventral side is notabley convex and smooth. The axe has been made on a good quality bull flint nodule. It looks to have been hastily made, it may well have been a rough out to be finished off at a later date. That said. The axe is very ergonomic in the right hand and could be used quite comfortably as it is. It is possible that as these type of tools were re sharpened and their appearance then became finer over time. This axe is in superb condition with a wonderful deep patination.
