DESCRIPTION: Hardcover: 364 pages. Publisher: Harry N. Abrams. Inc. 1987) Beads have been used throughout the ages and in virtually every culture. Not simply as adornment but to express social circumstances, political occurrences, and religious beliefs; as a form of currency; or as symbolic embodiments of curative powers. And they're colorful, made of various interesting materials, and can be combined in endless configurations. With more than 100 crisp color photos and intelligently written text that reaps the benefits of the author's 30 years of research, The History of Beads documents bead styles and uses in Europe, the Americas, Africa, and the Far East. Ranging from prehistoric times to the 20th century, this book stops along the way to consider the magic eye bead, prayer beads, and beads with other special attributes. An eight-page color gatefold section offers a fascinating timeline of the bead's history at a glance. Bead devotees can satisfy their curiosity about their medium of choice and draw inspiration for their own creations from the beautiful photos of necklaces, collars, bags, headdresses, and other beaded ornaments. Beyond Death: The Chinchorro Mummies of Ancient Chile by Bernardo T. Arriaza. Foreword by John W. Verano. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 176 ... morepages. Publisher: Smithsonian Institution Press; 1995) Thousands of years before ancient Egyptians mummified their dead elite. The South American Chinchorros performed elaborate mummification rituals for deceased members of every level and age of their society. The Chinchorros are exceptional for the sheer number of known mummies, nearly two hundred, and the variety and complexity of their mummification techniques. Although first discovered in 1917, the Chinchorro mummies are little known throughout the world and most literature about them is in Spanish. In"Beyond Death" Bernardo Arriaza brings to light these unprecedented remains, offers new interpretations of Chinchorro mortuary practices, and reconstructs this culture's daily life of 8,000 years ago. While this early South American society left no written record describing their customs and concept of death. The mummified remains provide clues to their culture. The Chinchorros lived as fishermen on the Pacific Coast of Northern Chile and Southern Peru for millennia. While they did not have ceramics, woven cloth, or metal tools, the early Chinchorros developed a complex process of skinning, eviscerating, and reconstructing a body so that it has remained preserved for 8,000 years. Arriaza details three distinctive styles of mummification in addition to bandaged mummies: the earliest"black mummies" coated with manganese paste; the"red mummies" coasted with red ocher; and the mud-coasted mummies of the latest period. Arriaza describes the clothing. Simple ornaments, and everyday tools that accompanied the bodies, and he speculates that people who concentrated so much energy in caring for their dead must have had a strong belief in the afterlife. Drawing on evidence from archaeology, biology, and Andean cosmology, Arriaza discusses the Chinchorro notion of death, their supernatural b

The Neandertal was named after theologian Joachim Neander. Who lived nearby in Düsseldorf in the late 17th century. Neander" is a classicized form of the common German surname Neumann. From the period called"Mousterian" 150 000- 40 000 b.c. tools made of stone. Settlement sites and some parts of human skulls were found. Evidence for hunters and collectors in this period was found in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and other parts of Germany. Neanderthals are thought to have used tools of the Mousterian class. Which were often produced using soft hammer percussion, with hammers made of materials like bones, antlers, and wood, rather ... morethan hard hammer percussion, using stone hammers. A result of this is that their bone industry was relatively simple. However, there is good evidence that they routinely constructed a variety of stone implements. Neanderthal(Mousterian) tools most often consisted of sophisticated stone-flakes, task-specific hand axes, and spears. Many of these tools were very sharp. There is also good evidence that they used a lot of wood, objects which are unlikely to have been preserved until today.
