This axe is made from a thick flint flake. It is oval in form with a slight convex base, the axe has been heavily retouched on one side suggesting it was also used as a scraper. The axe has an area to the top and one side that has been left cortical approx 30% This area of cortex fits the palm and fingers very comfortably. The tool has also been left with a small protruding nodule to the side. The thumb is placed around this for a firmer grip. It is in superb condition with great detail and even patination. A great artefact to add to a collection. Lower Acheulian. Small Unifacial Handaxe, found nr Swanscombe, Kent,a443 For sale; from my personal field walking collection. A very nice Lower Acheulian small unifaced handaxe. This tool has been made on a black with grey fleck flint nodule. The axe is elongated in plan and converges to a fine point. The front on profile is triangular. The base has been roughly worked and is mostly cortical. One the front there is a notched area for placing a couple of fingers in for a firmer grip. It feels as though the axe has been made for left handed use. This tool is in very good condition with great patination. It would make a nice addition to any collection. This tool has been from a from a flint nodule. It is triangular in plan and worked to form a point and side scraping edge. The dorsal side is mostly worked. There is a small area at the distal end that retains some cortex. The ventral side is flat and smooth where it has been detached from the main nodule. This is a very nicely worked and detailed tool. The dorsal side is partially biface with crisp detailed working. The distal end has been worked to a wide robust point. The ventral side is flat where is has been detached from the main nodule. This axe made has has been made on a thick flint flake from a nodule. The axe is of a foliate plan. It is unifacial with bifacial retouches all the way around and to the point, with exception for a small area to the side where the fingers wrap around it. The proximal end is rounded. The sides are straight and gradually narrows to a point at the distal end, it has been made for left handed use. This tool is in superb condition. This biface has been made on a thick marbled flint core. It is circular in plan with thick straight sides that are partially cortical for grasping. It has been made with a small robust point. This tool is in superb condition with nice even patination. Far better in the hand than the photos. Found Southfleet. Kent, near Swanscombe. Approx date 100.000-40,000 years. Length: 15 cm Width: 12 cm Thickness: 4.5 cm Weight: 1.023 grams The Mousterian period in Europe dated to around 200.000- 100,000 years ago, it was not until around 100,000 years ago that it made it's appearance in Britain, this was probably due to the harsh climate at that time. The axe has been made on a good quality bull flint nodule. It looks to have been hastily made, it may well have been a rough out to be finished off at a later date. That said. The axe is very ergonomic in the right hand and could be used quite comfortably as it is. It is possible that as these type of tools were re sharpened and their appearance then became finer over time. This axe is in superb condition with a wonderful deep patination.
