Lower Palaeolithic, Large Acheulian Tranchet Biface, Kent a733
Lower Palaeolithic. Large Acheulian Tranchet Biface, Kent a733 For sale; from my personal fieldwalking collection. Is a nicely made, large Acheulian tranchet biface. This superb biface has been made on a mable flint core. When it was first made it must have been very impressive indeed. This tool would have originally had a much longer distal point giving it a tear drop shape. It probably became shorter and shorter through retouching. Eventually it was subjected to a heavy tranchet blow removing the distal end completely. It was probably then used as a chopping tool, there are signs of use to the tranchet edge. This tool is is in superb condition with great patination. Far better in the hand than the photos. Made by Homo heidelbergensis. Dating approx 350.000-200,000 years. Found Norththfleet. Near Swanscombe, Kent. There are a few important sites in Britain. One of those being Swanscombe in Kent, this tool was found around a mile from the famous Swanscombe site. This tool was made by Homo heidelbergensis. Homo heidelbergensis is an extinct species of the genus homo which lived in Africa. Europe and western Asia from at least 600,000 years ago, and may date back 1,300,000 years. First discovered near Heidelburg in Germany in 1907, it was described and named by Otto Schoetensack. It survived until about 250,000 to 200,000 years ago. Neanderthals Denisovans and modern humans are all descended from Homo heidelbergensis. Between 300.000 and 400,000 years ago, an ancestral group of H. heidelbergensis separated themselves shortly after they had left Africa. One group branched northwest into Europe and West Asia, which eventually evolved into Neanderthals. The other group ventured eastwards throughout Asia, eventually developing into Denisovans.
