We have not seen an example of this Widdicomb before. So this would be a great piece for your home. It does have a some minor fixable"veneer" issues around top of table.see pictures. But even with the minor veneer issues, this piece is just amazing all the way around. For your Bidding consideration in this Auction is this incredible Birds Eye Maple Armoire. It is designed. And made, in a Rococo style and can easily blend with almost any period piece or setting due to its timeless beauty and quality of construction. It and has a variety of markings and Label validating its maker and age which are captured and shown in the photos. There is a heavy paper label on the base of the Armoire which identifies it as"WIDDICOMB FURNITURE CO. GRAND RAPIDS MI. George Widdicomb founded the company in 1858. It went through a few name changes due to family member involvement and in December of 1873, the name was changed to Widdicomb Furniture Company. In the late 1800's Widdicomb products included bed frames. Chiffoniers, Mirrors, Nightstands and other bedroom furniture of various kinds made of Oak, Ash, Birch ... moreand Maple. And fortunately, they also manufactured Armoires/ Wardrobes such as this magnificent piece. Widdicomb at this time were designing Furniture in French/ French Rococo, American Revival and Colonial Revival styles. Many of their pieces are found in Museums and Collections around the world today. This Armoire stands 76" Tall at the center point. 34 1/2" wide at the widest point and 21 3/4" deep. I estimate its weight at 75- 100 pounds but just a guess. Let me just say, the Birds Eye on this piece is stunning. It is exemplary of the age when you could get such quality wood from virgin trees. The concentration of Eyes is not found newer furniture. The entire piece of furniture appears to be made with Birds Eye Maple wood and veneer. The only exception I can note is the side boards of the drawer are Birch I believe. The front and back of the drawer are Birds Eye. The door and the back plate for the mirror on the inside of the door are Birds Eye as is the back and top of the cabinet and the entire interior. DESCRIPTION: An elegant chest of drawers-c. 1950-designed by the acclaimed British architect and furniture designer. Terence Harold Robsjohn-Gibbings(1905-1976) From 1943 until 1956, Robsjohn-Gibbings was the lead designer for the Widdicomb Furniture Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan. During this time, Widdicomb was widely known for its production of stylish and well-crafted Modernist furniture. The solidity of this piece exemplifies Widdicomb's high standard in furniture-making. It has both the Widdicomb/Gibbings tag and the stamped-metal seal for Grand Rapids Furniture(see photos) Widdicomb carried several versions of this chest of drawers, mostly in six drawers(tall or short) or three drawers. This chest, with double dove-tail construction, has three wide drawers set within a bezeled frame. The exterior wood is a bleached-walnut veneer. ... moreThe top drawer has compartments and a Widdicomb label(see photos) It also has a removable box for use in one of the drawers. The dresser, which is heavy, moves on recessed metal casters. DIMENSIONS: 51 1/4" L x 21" D x 31" H CONDITION: Partially restored. It originally had attached shelving with glass doors. When we acquired it, the shelving had been detached and only a portion of it remained. The entire piece was also spray-painted avocado green. We concentrated on repairing and refinishing the chest of drawers without the shelving. The paint has been removed, and the exterior has been carefully repaired, sanded, stained, and refinished. When we stripped the paint, the exposed walnut veneer on the top surface had a sharp contrast between the original brown patinated veneer-protected beneath the shelving-and the veneer bleached by years of exposure to sunlight(see photo) The remedies for this disparity were replacing the top veneer, which would not match the bleached walnut elsewhere on the piece, or painting the chest. Selling an antique mahogany princess dresser made by the Widdicomb furniture company in 1902. Completely refinished in hand rubbed oils and in pristine condition. Measurements are 45 inches wide. 26 1/2 inches high on the dresser part and 72 inches high with mirror. Beautiful carvings and the inside of the drawers are birds eye maple. There are two drawers above the one long drawer that is shown in photos. On the back of the drawer is signed by who worked on it and the date is Feb. 26, 1902. It is also dated on the inside of the mirror. Quality piece of furniture and has to be seen to be appreciated. The mirror is attached to dresser by a gear like locking method. I have a beautiful John Widdicomb makers of fine furniture Grand Rapids. MI original 3 drawer chest. IT is absolutely GORGEOUS! IT is so beautiful that if it does not sell within 2 months, I will remove it from eBay and keep it myself. There are dovetails on each drawer, front and back. Solid wood construction. I was told by Stickley furniture company, who purchased John Widdicomb furniture that it was probably made in the 1950's or 1960's and is made of Cherry wood. It has beautiful Gold inlays on the top, front, and feet. Some of the gold is worn away due to use by previous owner. You will fall in love with this piece! The quality and craftsmanship is outstanding. I did clean it with some Murphy's oil soap and then gently wiped it down. Measurements: 30" wide X 24" tall X 18" deep. Condition: The bottom drawer ... moreneeds a new drawer pull. This can be manufactured by a experienced furniture maker. A small stain on the left upper corner of the middle drawer. I could not seem to get that off. I did clean it very well. There are some chips on the feet due to wear from previous owner. Up for your consideration is a true piece of mid century modern history! You are looking at an original Widdicomb furniture advertisement from Grand Rapids Michigan. The furniture line was designed by T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings. This is a thin booklet that measures 8 1/2" X 11" and spreads out to a 36" x 22" size poster. One side has furniture drawings of the 1600& 1700 series in the line. The other side has the colored images. There are a couple of gray smudges on the front(looks like fingerprint marks from the original ink? and a little wear to the edges when folded.
