During the late 19th century. People of wealth began purchasing labor saving devices. Usually this included cook stoves, ice boxes, etc. to be used by the servants. If you were VERY wealthy, you would also have an ice box in the parlor. This would be used by the servants to attend to the family and guests. Because it would be seen by the public, it was made fancy and ornate to be a part of the furniture décor of the room. This is what I am selling here, what was during the time called a parlor ice box. The original brass label remains on this piece indicating this model was called the NATIONAL. I believe it was manufactured by the Belding Company. It is of the highest quality and style. Antique Unusual size oak ice box---26 inches tall---boarding house ice box-14872
I have had some really great and unusual quartered quarter sawn oak ice boxes over the years. Some fancy parlor ice boxes and a few salesman samples. This falls into the category as unusual in that it is very small; smaller than an apartment box but larger than a salesman sample. I am guessing it was a guest room(boarding rooming house) example or maybe for a camper. Just a guess. Regardless. It is very cool. Measuring just 26 inches tall, 17 wide, and about 14 deep. Raised panel doors, complete interior(with oak shelf) and original hardware(white metal of some kind) We have refinished this piece and it has a smooth, even, authentic finish.
