Flame mahogany library reading table circa 1840
Stunning late Georgian/ early Victorian(circa 1825- 1840) Library quartet reading stand in flame mahogany. Beautiful french polished finish with the usual marks of age here and there- see photos. The book holding ledges pull out and store inside if you want to use this as a completely flat topped side table and they simply push back in to hold books when the leaves are raised. Each of the four leaves can be raised or lowered independently. Has a carved lion head at one end and a carved claw foot. Lift mechanism still works though almost two centuries of use mean that it's a bit stiff to use and slightly wobbly when it's in the raised position. Looks better down anyway and far less strain on the mechanism to use it that way! One advantage of this early two strut design is that when down. It's very solid and will support heavy objects ... moresuch as lamps sculptures etc without bowing) A few long dead woodworm holes in the round softwood piece that attaches the table section to the lift shaft(see last photo) but none elsewhere. Couple of splits in the wooden base of the drawer section due to contraction with age and a similar split in one of the top sections that has been polished over. one of the end scrolls on the top of the front leg is also missing- see picture 9. And that's absolutely all the faults- very few for a piece of this age! Fantastic piece of old library furniture. Antique Georgian Flame Mahogany Knife/ Cutlery Box Without Slotted Interior Late 18th-Century English Original finish. Unrestored 9”L x 10”D x 14”H(at back) Beautiful. English-made knife box in grain-matched flame mahogany. The piece is six-sided. With the front three sides describing a complex serpentine profile of arcs and s-curves, a tour de force of woodworking. All edges are set off with a continuous spiral"rope" inlay of ebony and satinwood. The profile of the top is accented by a pencil inlay running around all four sides. The spiral inlay is used as a highlight on the underside of the lid as well. Together with a six-pointed compass star set into the center. The"rope" and"compass star" motifs suggest seafaring. Which may go to the origins of this form. One advantage of this type of storage box is that ... moreit would compel a counting of the silver flatware after every meal. The box has a keyed cabinet lock. But the key is not included. There are slight mars on the left and right sides.
