For sale today I am offering an old vintage oilstone sharpening hone/ stone. This is a natural novaculite stone. I am uncertain of the grade. It is either a Washita grade(course) or a soft Arkansas(medium) The stone measures 6 23/32 inches long by 2 1/16 inches wide by 1 11/32 inches thick. The stone weighs 1 lb. 8 ounces. The stone is in good condition with a little bit of ordinary edge roughness. The surfaces are relatively flat showing a little bit of normal wear but not much. The stone is stained a kind of dirty looking taupe yellow/brown from old oil and surface loading. The stone is exceptionally thick with lots and lots of material left for wear. With a moderate amount of clean up and truing up of the edges and saturation with fresh oil. The stone could be put right back into use and would make an excellent sharpening stone. It measure 1 7/8" wide x 7 13/16" long x 3/4" thick and has a very smooth surface. This one is not wildly figured like some you will see online. But the signature swirls and woodgrain figuring are still there. This hone is likely mined a long time ago, it came in a lot along with joinery and woodworking tools from the UK dating back as far as the mid 1800's. It was in a rather dingy oil soaked wood box that I have since discarded. It was previously used with oil, but has been throuhgly degreased and now using it with water only is no problem. It has been lapped perfectly flat on top and bottom ... moresurfaces all the way up to 800grit silicon carbide wet and dry sandpaper, chamfered on all edges and is ready for use. I have only experimented with it a little bit, but it is a mid-grit or pre-finishing hone which I would guess lands in the 5K-7K range. Note that all of the photos are of the hone wet. Except for the last 3 which are when dry. Please inspect the photos closely and ask any questions that you may have. Check my feedback and see how pleased previous bidders have been with my items. This is a FARM FRESH Antique Farrier's Hoof knife.the OLD TIMER who gave it to me had it in a box he threw in when I bought his old parade saddle. I honestly thought that I was getting stuck with a bunch of used up stuff he couldn't bring himself to throw away. In fact it was a treasure chest holding all the items dear to his heart from days gone by. I know this item and others are better served in somebody else's hands. I can't make out the maker's mark.but it is there. If you are familiar with this type of item than you will probably know better than me what it says. He told me he used to trim his own horses hooves.and I would venture a guess that he used this knife. It still holds a pretty sharp edge.
