It looks and feels as though it was also used as a right handed scraper. This axe is made from a thick flint flake. It is oval in form with a slight convex base, the axe has been heavily retouched on one side suggesting it was also used as a scraper. The axe has an area to the top and one side that has been left cortical approx 30% This area of cortex fits the palm and fingers very comfortably. The tool has also been left with a small protruding nodule to the side. The thumb is placed around this for a firmer grip. It is in superb condition with great detail and even patination. A great artefact to add to a collection. The side profile is straight, the front view has a very slight s shape, there is an area to one side that has traces of cortex for grasping(left handed) The tool shows considerable aged orange patination with signs of frost pitting that looks like worked nibbling in places. Small Acheulian Biface/Handaxe with Side Scraper. Found Nr Swanscombe, Kent a667 For sale; from my personal fieldwalking collection. Is a small, superbly detailed Acheulian biface/handaxe. This tool has been from a from a flint nodule. It is triangular in plan and worked to form a point and side scraping edge. The dorsal side is mostly worked. There is a small area at the distal end that retains some cortex. The ventral side is flat and smooth where it has been detached from the main nodule. This is a very nicely worked and detailed tool. This tool has been made on a marbled flint core. It has a central ridge on the dorsal side from the distal point to the butt. The sides of the tool are straight. The ventral side is smooth with clear ripple marks emitting from one side of the tool. This is a nicely worked tool. This tool has been from a from a flint nodule that is black with grey flecks. The cortex of the tool is white. It is roughly oval in plan. The dorsal side is partially biface with crisp detailed working. The distal end has been worked to a wide robust point. The ventral side is flat where is has been detached from the main nodule. This nicely worked and detailed tool is in very condition with clear working detail and great patination. Far better in the hand than the photo. It is subtriangular in plan, unifacially worked with a well defined protruding point. In the centre of the worked face there is a notch and smoothed ridge the width of the tool to prevent the fingers from moving forwards when striking an object. A well thought out and delightful tool. This tool is in very good condition with clear working detail and great patination. Far better in the hand than the photo.
