Massive 20cm! Mousterian Levallois Point Handaxe. Kent England. m45 This sale is for a bifacial Mousterian levallois point. This handaxe is of very large proportions, it measures 20x14cm and appears to have been made for left handed use, the tool is in good condition, it has around 20% cortex remaining, 10% of this is in the grasping area. Weight: 1.2Kg- 2.65 lbs The Mousterian period in Europe dated to around 200.000- 100,000 years ago, it was not until around 100,000 years ago that it made it's appearance in Britain, this was probably due to the harsh climate at that time. The Mousterian stone tool industry was based on the production of flakes that were used either as sharp points. Side scrapers, notches, denticulated and the thin flat based hand axes. The levallois technique and handaxes continued during the middle Palaeolithic as ... moredid the production of various scrapers and bifaces similar to those of the Acheulian tradition. This tool has been made from avery thick marbled flint flake. It is oval in form with a nice even band of cortex running it's length for grasping. The tool has been made with sinous S twist running through it. This tool is in superb condition with clear detailed working and great patination. Found field walking in Northfleet. Near Swanscombe, Kent. Provenance supplied with sale. Length 12 cm x Width: 7.5 cm x 5 cm(thickness) Weight: 510 grams The Clactonian culture is named after a superb collection of prehistoric material found on a site close to Clacton-On-Sea in Essex. England. At Swanscombe. Kent the deposit known as the Lower Gravels contained ... moredistinctive Clactonian style tools. Suggesting that a Clactonian tribe had established a riverside campsite in the area over 400,000 years ago. It is not known exactly when human groups first made their way into what is now Britain. This axe is made from a thick flint flake. It is oval in form with a slight convex base, the axe has been heavily retouched on one side suggesting it was also used as a scraper. The axe has an area to the top and one side that has been left cortical approx 30% This area of cortex fits the palm and fingers very comfortably. The tool has also been left with a small protruding nodule to the side. The thumb is placed around this for a firmer grip. It is in superb condition with great detail and even patination. This tool has been made on a black with grey fleck flint nodule. The axe is elongated in plan and converges to a fine point. The front on profile is triangular. The base has been roughly worked and is mostly cortical. One the front there is a notched area for placing a couple of fingers in for a firmer grip. It feels as though the axe has been made for left handed use. This tool is in very good condition with great patination. It would make a nice addition to any collection. Lower Acheulian. Proto Biface/Handaxe, From Nr Swanscombe Kent,a495 For sale; from my personal field walking collection. A Lower Acheulian prototype biface/ handaxe. The tool appears to have been made on an elongated split river pebble. It has dual worked points with a flat base. The side profile is straight, the front view has a very slight s shape, there is an area to one side that has traces of cortex for grasping(left handed) The tool shows considerable aged orange patination with signs of frost pitting that looks like worked nibbling in places. It is a rolled surface with great aged patination but clear working detail. It would make a nice addition to any collection. Better in the hand than the photo’s. There are a few important sites in Britain. One of those being Swanscombe in Kent, this tool was found around a mile from the famous Swanscombe site. This tool was made by Homo heidelbergensis. Homo heidelbergensis is an extinct species of the genus homo which lived in Africa. Europe and western Asia from at least 600,000 years ago, and may date back 1,300,000 years. First discovered near Heidelburg in Germany in 1907, it was described and named by Otto Schoetensack. It survived until about 250,000 to 200,000 years ago. Neanderthals Denisovans and modern humans are all descended from Homo heidelbergensis. Between 300.000 and 400,000 years ago, an ancestral group of H. heidelbergensis separated themselves shortly after they had left Africa.
