The Lost Civilizations Of The Stone Age by Richard Rudgley. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 310 pages. Publisher: The Free Press; 1999) ISBN: ... more0684855801. This title challenges the notion that modern history is far superior to the events and accomplishments of early civilization. The author. A scholar of prehistoric art, religion, and technology, argues that the occurrences and characteristics of later human history have their origins in prehistory. He argues that the system of constellations in the night sky, the use of calculating instruments, and artistic representations all prove that the people of the Stone Age were anything but primitive. Perhaps after reading this insightful book, the reader will come away with an entirely different take on prehistory and its legacy. CONDITION: New hardcover w/dustjacket. Free Press(1998) 320 pages. Unblemished except VERY slight edge and corner shelf wear to dustjacket and covers. Dustjacket also exhibits very mild rubbing(dustjacket is high-gloss black and so shows rub marks very easily. Even merely from being shelved between other books) Very minimal shelf wear consistent with new stock from an open-shelf book store(such as Barnes& Noble, etc. Pages are pristine; clean, crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, unambiguously unread. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR JACKET DESCRIPTION(S) AND FOR PAGES OF PICTURES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: Award-winning British scholar takes a provocative and engaging look at the Stone Age. Challenging some of the most basic assumptions about the beginnings of civilization, and offering a fascinating and rich introduction to a lost world. Line drawings and photo illustrations. Richard Rudgley is an Oxford-trained scholar of Stone Age art, religion and technology. PROFESSIONAL REVIEWS: REVIEW: Ever wonder what it was like to be a caveman? Whether you are a dentist. Ancient Scandinavian Stone Age Neolithic Flint Axe
A beautiful. Rare and well provenanced Neolithic axe, dating to approximately 4000- 2000 B.C. and found in Scandinavia. This beautiful chip stone tool was made from a large piece of flint. Broken down and then chipped into form, remnants of attractive surface flaking remain in areas of the axe which are not so highly polished. Axes like this would have been attached to a sturdy wooden handle and used for chopping up trees. This tool has been ground on a larger. Flat stone and polished, a task which would have taken many hours of hard labour and care to complete and giving it an attractive smooth finish. This fascinating early flint implement. Dates to the north-west European Neolithic period(approx 4000-2000 B.C. This period saw the dawn of civilization, when Early man was leaving the Hunter-Gatherer lifestyle towards a more sedentary, farm-oriented ... moreexistence. This transition is one of the overwhelming achievements of man, enabling food surplus and the rise of civilization. Length: 6 inches. Condition: Excellent. Old collection label bearing'Denmark' likely the country of origin) still clearly visible. Provenance: An extremely well provenanced piece. From the collection of James Curle(1862-1944) of Melrose, Scotland, and thence by descent. Although a lawyer by profession, Curle was an accomplished amateur archaeologist and his name remains one of the most famous in the field of Romano-British Archaeology, having excavated and published extensively in the early 1900's. From 1888-1903 Curle acquired the most magnificent collection of Nordic antiquities outside Scandinavia, eventually selling most of his pieces to the British Museum in 1921. The Curle collection in the British Museum has been the subject of numerous publications and remains an important reference point for scholars of prehistoric Nordic artifacts. ArtAncient Ltd. is pleased to have acquired almost all the remaining pieces from the Curle collection. Unsold in 1921, retained by his family and with a provenance dating back almost a century.

Ancient Prehistoric Stone Age Neolithic Flint Chert Danish Axe - 2000 BC
A beautiful neolithic polished stone axe. Dating to approximately 2000 B.C. and found in Scandinavia. This beautiful stone tool was made from a large piece of flint. Prehistoric Lower Paleolithic Acheulian Flint Tool Hand Axe - 800,000 BC
A remarkable prehistoric Acheulian handaxe. Produced by an individual of the species Homo erectus. A close ancestor to modern humans, around 800,000– 100,000 BC. These poignant artefacts are the only remaining link to our truly distant past, and serve as some of the earliest examples of man’s unique desire to create and manipulate the word around him, in some senses, the earliest form of art itself. The flint an attractive caramel hue. And the distinctive teardrop form typical of Acheulian tools. This is a stunning, tactile example of a prehistoric handaxe. Worked with care and precision, this artefact has more than just a functional quality; the desire to create this pleasing form goes beyond the necessity of the object and suggests a sense of aesthetic on the part of the maker, a feeling to which we can relate. This sense of a shared perception ... moreof beauty is a remarkable link to the humanity of the individual who crafted this tool. Not only are Acheulean handaxes found over the largest area. But they were also produced over an unimaginably long period of time. The earliest known examples date to around 1.6 million years ago(in Africa) and continued to be produced until 100,000 years before the present day. As such, they represent the longest lived human technology that has ever existed, dwarfing the entire scale of human civilisation in comparison. Those found in northern Europe may well be from species ancestral to later Neanderthal populations. As periodic visitors to the far north-west of Europe. Communities of primitive man would have relied upon such tools for their very existence, using them to skin and butcher animals. In the harsh and dangerous world in which they existed, survival was a constant struggle; they were subject to the natural hazards of the environment in a way that is simply incomprehensible to us today. The individuals who used this tool, in some ways so similar to ourselves, would have been a part of nature, not distinct from it. The development of these early tools represents far mo

Up for auction. One FINE, LARGE, GERMAN FLINT AXE, POLISHED, THIN-BUTTED, from the NEOLITHIC Period, LARGE at 18cm/7"L, 5.7cm/2 5/8"W, and of a light/medium gray flint. The bit and much of each face is thoroughly ground and polished. This is an EXCELLENT example of a European flint working axe. Has plastic labels. One of which is missing(possibly the most interesting one) but which left traces, apparently dirt sticking to glue under the embossed lettering. If someone is good with a stereo-microscope, and speaks German, I believe much of the lettering could be deciphered. Otherwise, I'm sure it would come off with a little solvent. Thank you very much for attending my auction and- GOOD LUCK BIDDERS!
CISSBURY FLINT FLAKE AXE
Hello and thanks for looking! Up for auction is this lovely large fragment(a significant portion) of a neolithic Flint Flake Axe from Cissbury.West Sussex.I'm not inclined to think it's a preform/roughout because it most likely broke due to use and was subsequently discarded(the patination on the truncated/broken end, which is similar to that on the rest of the axe, would suggest it may have broken not long after manufacture) It measures 12cm.4 3/4" long and 6.5cm.2 3/4" at its widest. It weighs approximately 210g.It was manufactured from a grey flint and has a nice overall white patination. The axe would date from circa 3000 to 2500 B.C. Cissbury is a prehistoric site near the village of Findon.About 5 miles north of Worthing in West Sussex. The site is famous for its prehistoric flint mines. The axe comes from a late 19th. ... morecentury private Sussex collection. It bears an old inscription'CISSBURY' on one face. And a very faint inscription on the truncated/broken end which appears to read'glas,N C10'The use of a UV light may help to decipher the inscription. I WILL BE HAPPY TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE. HAPPY BIDDING AND I WISH YOU THE VERY BEST OF LUCK!

nice neanderthal uniface pointed flint hand axe Mousterian ca. 50 000BC
The Neandertal was named after theologian Joachim Neander. Who lived nearby in Düsseldorf in the late 17th century. Neander" is a classicized form of the common German surname Neumann. In turn, Neanderthals were named after"Neander Valley" where the first Neanderthal remains were found. The term Neanderthal Man was coined in 1863 by Anglo-Irish geologist William King. From the period called"Mousterian" 150 000- 40 000 b.c. tools made of stone. Settlement sites and some parts of human skulls were found. Evidence for hunters and collectors in this period was found in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and other parts of Germany. Neanderthals are thought to have used tools of the Mousterian class. Which were often produced using soft hammer percussion, with hammers made of materials like bones, antlers, and wood, rather ... morethan hard hammer percussion, using stone hammers. A result of this is that their bone industry was relatively simple. However, there is good evidence that they routinely constructed a variety of stone implements. Neanderthal(Mousterian) tools most often consisted of sophisticated stone-flakes, task-specific hand axes, and spears. Many of these tools were very sharp. There is also good evidence that they used a lot of wood, objects which are unlikely to have been preserved until today. Typ: nice uniface pointed hand axe with wonderful dorsal flaking and beautiful dorsal and ventral edge retouching rest of cortex and great patina excellent provenance The work traces of the Neanderthals which he left in the manufacture of the tool is to see very well Material: flint This unique artefact is from an Neanderthal base camp. 4400Y.O: WONDERFUL AX AXE DANISH STONE AGE NEOLITHIC CHALCOLITHIC FLINT DAGGER C
DANISH STONE AGE ARTIFACTS BY PALATINA AUTHENTICITY GUARANTEED Description"Thick butted b-type ax( axe) Broad bladed" Length of this terrific adze is 113 mms. Wonderful marble-like flint with fossil includings! Belonging to the last period of the Stone Age. 2400-1800 BC, known as the Dagger period( Copper Age- Chalcolithic) coincided with the early Bronze Age in the British Isles and Central Europe. Weapons and tools made of copper and bronze were introduced and provided a challenge for those who made flint tools. The result can be seen in the excellent examples of imitations in flint of foreign bronze daggers. At the end of the period, the production of metal implements finally gained a foothold, and there is evidence of an emerging new social stratification. This is reflected in finds from settlements with both small and much ... morelarger long houses. Burial customs varied from simple interments below ground or in passage graves, to burials in stone cists or log coffins covered with large mounds. The longitudinal section of this ax is V-formed. The butt-end is rectangular. The broad bladed axes are without doubt influenced by the contemporary copper and bronze axes. Provenance is an old collection. More details will follow the artifact. I guarantee absolutely for the authenticity of this terrific Younger Stone Age ax. Please view also my other auctions with relics from the European Prehistory. Powered by The free listing tool. Prehistoric Stone Age Nordic Neolithic Flint Hand Axe - 3800 BC
A fine ancient Scandinavian Neolithic flint hand axe. Dating to 3800– 2200 BC. Through looking at this ancient hand axe we can appreciate why flint working is regarded as an art form. Not simply a technology. There is something captivating about this object, whether it is the pattern of the percussion marks, or the way the light dances off the surface and interacts with the changing caramel colours of the underlying flint, it is more than a typical Neolithic axe. For the man or woman who crafted this axe. Life was a struggle, a constant battle against the elements. Seasonal migration would have been a constant feature of their life, moving between settlements hunting and fishing on the coast, whilst making occasional trips inland to hunt for forest animals and to engage in exchange with farming communities in the interior. However, there ... moreis a sense of creativity that runs throughout the artefact, from the attractive caramel hue of the stone to the pleasing form, we can appreciate these aspects just as they did, giving us an almost sacred sense of shared humanity with this man or woman from such a distant, remote time. Length: 7 inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Lars Otto Johan Holst(1863-1936) A veterinary surgeon who was active in Ronneby, southern Sweden from around 1887. Mr. Holst took a strong interest in the prehistory of ancient Scandinavia and he obsessively acquired throughout his career, forming one of the most magnificent collections of early Stone Age artefacts. He obtained these objects from around Ronneby, partly through gathering himself, and partly as payment for work done in his service as a vet between 1887- 1929. Please note that the new purchaser will be provided with a copy of two photographs showing Mr. Holst in his office and his collection mounted on the wall. Prehistoric Nordic Scandinavian Neolithic Flint Axe - 4000 BC
An ancient Scandinavian Neolithic flint axe. Originally from a late 19th century collection and dating to 4000– 2000 BC. Worked from a fine caramel coloured flint. We can see how this axe was carefully polished to achieve a pleasing finish on the blade end, but it remains pocked with percussion marks around the area that would originally have been woven in cord and attached to a wooden handle. The Neolithic Scandinavians were a tough people. Who clung resolutely to the use of stone tools even as their neighbours adopted metalworking. This evocative artefact; broad, hardy and strong, has more than a hint of the society that produced it. There are many forgeries of this type of Neolithic axe currently on the market. And it is extremely rare to encounter a flint axe which comes with such a reassuringly old and firm provenance. Length: 3 ¼ ... moreinches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Minor chip to cutting edge, as shown. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Lars Otto Johan Holst(1863-1936) A veterinary surgeon who was active in Ronneby, southern Sweden from around 1887. A very large Mesolithic Flint hand axe/chopping tool from Suffolk. East Anglia, UK. Showing obvious retouching/pressure flaking. Even patina and striking platform. An impressive and large display piece. Size: 12 x 8.5 cm at longest points. Provenance: Older collection. Retrieved in the 1970's from the now eroded Palaeolithic horizon at Reculver cliffs. Kent. UK Please Contact me for worldwide shipping costs. Excerpt from'The Lower Palaeolithic. Vol 1' by John Wymer. The Palaeolithic importance of this matter is that a particularly rich site is exposed on top of the cliffs between Herne Bay and Reculver. With hand-axes and flakes apparently falling on to the beach from fluviatile gravel. Which is beneath deposits mapped as Head Brickearth.Whatever the explanation. It demonstrates occupation of this part of Kent, Happy bidding

Ancient Neolithic Stone Age Massive Bi-Facial Biface Flint Hand Axe Tool 800,000
A remarkable prehistoric handaxe. Produced around 800,000- 100,000 BC. These ancient hand-axes serve as some of the earliest examples of man’s desire to create and manipulate the word around him; in some senses they are the earliest form of art itself. This is a stunning, tactile object. The earliest known examples date to around 1.6 million years ago(in Africa) And continued to be produced until 100,000 years before the present day. As such, they represent the longest lived human technology that has ever existed, dwarfing the entire scale of human civilization in comparison. This one is a particularly large and attractive piece. Length: 8 inches. Weight: 1lb. 15oz. 1.94 lbs) Condition: Very good. Un-restored. Provenance: Ex. U.S. private collection. 100% Genuine Artifact or your money back!
