Middle Palaeolithic (Mousterian) chert core or chopper from France
This heavy chert core/chopping tool is from a Mousterian workshop near the castle of Corbiac. It has large detachments on both faces. Where there are also small areas of cortex remaining. The chert is pale brown with orange markings and white spots. Undamaged condition. A very good example of a core/chopper from this period. Age: c50000BP. Size: 11cm x 7cm. This chopper core comes from the same well-established Lower Palaeolithic site at Ridge. Near Romsey in Hampshire, where the proto-handaxe was found. It is made of toffee-coloured flint with areas of white patination and some residual cortex. It is in good condition with no modern damage. Age: c400000BP. Size: 13.4cm x 7.3cm.

This Clactonian-type sub-circular chopper core comes from Maidstone in Kent. And'Bluebell Hill Maidstone' is written on it in white ink. There is also a small label from an old collection. It is made of grey flint. Now patinated white and there are one or two more recent, but not-very-modern, chips showing the colour of the material. A large area of cortex has been left at the'butt' as a handhold. This is a rare item. Particularly with the exact provenance available. Age: c35000BP. Size: 9.3cm x 8.2cm.

This tool has been made on a good quality almost black flint core. The tool is slightly trapezoid in plan. The distal point is wide and has a slight angle to it like a cleaver. The proximal end is flat and has been created using a tranchet blow. Both the side edges have a notable curve towards the distal end. The base is concave and smoothly finished.
