Retouch: a rare type of handaxe with respect to European sites(chisels are much more commonly found at African sites) and an amazing specimen. It is made on pebble. And facial flaking is mirrored. Each face has a cortical area at the right edge, the rest of the face is retouched. Facial flaking is significant on the face shown first, even with some edge flaking, while the other face presents only few large flake scars. Working edge at the distal end is wedge-shaped and straight(the edge between the two black lines in picture 7) and each face has a“chisel-blow” a flake scar struck from the distal end. Raw-material: a pebble out of grey quartzite. The most common raw-material on the Garonne terraces, Preservation: very well: the surface is somewhat weathered. But flake scars are well defined. Two small flat recent chips at the distal part of the left edge of the first face, while the scar at the edge in picture 2 seems to be genuine old. Additional Information. Point of percussion is removed, it must have been somewhere at the proximal part of the left edge of the face shown in picture 3. The handaxe is of asymmetrical wedge shape, with a steep back at the right edge of the face shown first, and a cutting/ working edge opposite. The tip is pointed and triangular, with medial ridge on the face shown first. Facial retouch is made with broad flaking, mainly on the proximal part of both faces. The back is worked with broad and some finer flaking, and the thin working edge is wavy at the proximal part where the edge is trimmed, and straight at the distal part where no additional retouch was needed. This handaxe can be classified as cleaver-like specimen(the working edge being the thin long lateral edge) or as pointed specimen because of the very pointed pronounced tip, or as backed handaxe because of it’s thick steep back. Second is the other end of wedge shape which is mainly retouched on the second face. This end looks very cleaver-like and was certainly used for just this kind of work. The lateral edges are different: one is a natural cortical angular back, only the tip is trimmed, the other one is thin and straight- good for cutting, Raw-material: a pebble out of gray quartzite. The center artifact is 4.5" x 3" All three are part of a collection given to me 38 years ago when I was in college. Percussion flaked from chalcedony. The original owner must have taken great pride in their artistry. The collection belonged to an old gentleman. Now dead, who shared with me that his"finds" had come from the Mojave Desert east of Barstow. CA when he was actively collecting in the 1930's. All were found above the old 1780 ft shoreline of now vanished Lake Manix which once filled the basin. In 1976 I took the ... morecollection to the San Bernardino County Museum to authenticate the pieces. Ruth DeEtte Simpson. The County Archaeologist confirmed for me that these stone tools were definitely Lake Manix Lithic Industry artifacts of the Mojave Desert. She went on to say that they appeared to be identical to surface finds on desert pavements in the area of the Calico Hills Archaeological Site near yermo. In which Dr Louis Leakey was Project Director. Dr Leakey shared with"Dee" that the artifacts found in the Mojave looked just like those found in East Africa. This tool was found whilst field walking in the Northfleet(Springhead) and Southfleet area of Kent. Please see provenance details below. This implement was found close to the Roman town of Vagniacae at Northfleet in Kent. This area borders the famous Palaeolithic site at Swanscombe, which is less than a mile away. The area where this implement come from has been subjected to much disturbance through road building. Channel Tunnel High Speed Rail Link and other commercial ... morebuilding. It is more than likey that the implement had been disturbed through this construction activity. I was initially looking for Iron Age and Roman pottery sherds. However, it was whilst picking up pottery that I began to notice shaped implements of a mucher greater age and so began collecting those as well. Very Large Acheulian/Early Mousterian Handaxe Core m62 Here for offer is a handaxe dating to around the upper Acheulian/ early Mousterian period. The axe is of very large proportions, it is similar in style to an Acheulian handaxe, the axe has been worked all round, there is one very small area on the butt that as approx 5% cortex remaing. Weight: 1 kg L: 12 cm x W: 10 cm x Thickness 7cm The Mousterian period in Europe dated to around 200.000- 100,000 years ago, it was not until around 100,000 years ago that it made it's appearance in Britain, this was probably due to the harsh climate at that time. The Mousterian stone tool industry was based on the production of flakes that were used either as sharp points. Side scrapers, notches, denticulated and the thin flat based hand axes. Dating: archaeological research in Western Europe proved that the European continent has been conquested as early as 1.3 to 1,1 Mio years(finds of Atapuerca/ Spain) Early Pleistocene. The assignment of the oldest human finds at Atapuerca to a particular early human species as Homo erectus or Homo antecessor is still controversial. As controversially discussed is the earliest date of permanent colonization of Europe, and good dating of the high gravel terraces of southern French rivers is still lacking. So we suggest an estimated time frame of approx. 800.000 to 400.000 BP. Description: Size: length 11.0 cm, width7,1 cm, thickness 4,1 cm, weight 325 grams, ... moreShape. Retouch: a fantastic cleaver on flake. But point of percussion is removed, it was somewhere at the lower left edge/ proximal end of the face shown second. The exterior side shown first presents broad lateral flaking at both edges, and some finer flat, stepped edge flaking at the the right lateral edge. The butt has a stepped retouch. The other face has the retouch at the proximal part of left edge and proximal end, as already mentioned. The wide cutting edge at the distal end is wedge-shaped, very typical on cleavers. It has fine splinted traces of use/fine retouch especially on the cortical face. Raw-material: a pebble out of gray quartzite. The most common raw-material on the Garonne terraces, Preservation: very well: the surface of the rock is weathered and edges rounded at some places where it must have been exposed to wind and weather for a very long time. But flake scars are still well defined. Few of the tiny flat scars at the cutting edge seem to be recent, and there are two, also flat scars at the butt. This axe has been made from a thick dark and light grey flint flake. It is roughly subtriangular in form with a flat base and has been worked to form a robust point. The butt remains cortical. On the side there are some notches to place the fingers in. It feels and looks to been made for left handed use and is very ergonomic. This tool is in very good condition with clear detailed working and great patination. It is far better in the hand than the photo's. This tool would make a nice addition to a collection.
