The wood is quarter-sawn oak, a popular material of the period and most associated with the Mission or Arts and Crafts styles, between about 1901 and 1915. The marquetry on the back splat is interesting; the purest Mission style pieces were devoid of ornamentation, or only carried the simplest cut-outs or carving. The rounded edges and geometrical shapes of the marquetry may be an influence from the Austrian Secessionist Movement, which had its greatest impact on American furniture toward the end of that period, between about 1908 and 1915. This beautifully colored handcrafted dresser originally was part of a 7 bedroom set. It has the original brass stamp of authenticity on the left inside of the top drawer. Which was the authenticity stamp used from 1913-1925. The measurements are:51.25"X 34.0"X 17.75" It was part of my Great Grandmother's bedroom set and has been an item of interest and intrigue by all who appreciate QUALITY HOME DECOR ANTIQUITIES. Sligh founded the company in 1880, after working for Berkey& Gay as a finisher and traveling salesman in 1874. In 1883 Charles R. Sligh traveled to Central America, and established the Honduras Mahogany Co. which purchased mahogany timber in Honduras, cut it in New Orleans, and shipped it to Grand Rapids. After the economic crisis depression of 1893, Sligh diversified his manufacturing interests into bicycles as well as furniture. The bicycle operation was merged in 1896 with another manufacturer from Ohio to form the Hamilton-Kenwood Cycle Co. Beginning in 1903 Sligh formed other lumber companies, including the Charles Sligh Timber Co. the Clark-Sligh Timber Co. and the Grand Rapids Timber Com. which invested in timberlands in the U.S. Northwest. These separate companies lasted until the late 1940s. Sligh was a founding member of the Furniture Manufacturers Association of Grand Rapids and was elected to the state senate in 1924. Item Description: This is a rare estate find Art Nouveau vanity and cane chair; both are ivory in color. Vanity has lucite knobs. Folding mirrors on each side, a full length mirror in the center, and stands 70" tall x 57" wide x 18" deep. Original locks and keys. Made by the Sligh Furniture Co. Grand Rapids Michigan c. 1919. This piece is signed under one drawer in pencil by someone named A. Endema M.G. I looked up the name on ancestry.com and found that a man by that name came from the Netherlands and settled in Grand Rapids Michigan. Perhaps this is the person who assembled the piece as drawer numbers and left or right side are also written in the same hand in pencil. Buyer to verify accuracy of description prior to purchase. From the Grand Rapids Historical Commission: Sligh bedroom suites were owned by presidents Rutherford B. Hayes and Benjamin Harrison. Sligh began making a line of case goods from Circassian walnut in 1900. And by 1908 the popular line had become a top seller. Though never considered an“Arts and Crafts” producer. Sligh made at least one notable suite in that style. In 1907 Sligh produced a solid gumwood bedroom suite designed by John E. Brower, with a striking contrasting finish of amber and malachite green. Its functional design was completely unornamented except for circular and oval lily-of-the valley drawer pulls, and delicate lily cut-outs on the bed. The pieces’ gently rounded lines seem more akin to the Moderne movement of the late 1920s than to the other French and Colonial-influenced furniture made by Sligh in 1907. During World War I. Antique Kendel Grand Rapids Vanity Dresser Mirror Tilts Oxford Style
Handsome vanity or dresser mirror made by Kendel of Grand Rapids. Michigan. It is well made with a solid wood frame and brass screws on the sides that hold or allow adjustment of the mirror angle. The mirror has some discoloration or spots; I tried to show that in pictures. The piece stands 20¾" tall x 15" wide. Other than the mirror spots, it is in great shape.
