This military/campaign slope really has had no expense spared. The 2 original cut glass. Brass rimmed inkwells are present and have cut glass stoppers. The interior is in fantastic condition. Both skivers are in light powder green. The secret drawers slide cover is easy to use and the drawers are smooth. All the drawers are dove tailed jointed and very solid. Produced by the London maker Parkins& Gotto of Oxford Street the key which is original presses in releasing the hinged lid. The side panel drops down revealing a number of stationary slots and three small draws probably for stamps. The lid section doubles as a writing slope and has a small clasp which when opened reveals another storage area. As the door opens a spring loaded inkwell and pen holder slides out of the box as shown in the photographs. The makers mark is shown embossed in gold on the inside writing slope. There is a brass recessed handle to the top for carrying this wonderful box. To the outside there is wear associated with age but no major damages, there is also a storage or traveling label probably of the original owner. It belonged to my mother who inherited it from a Scottish Aunt I don't think the name on the box was hers39;s. A wonderful example that would look wonderful in any home or made a great addition to any collection. It has Coromandel to it's top and front. The sides and back are in Ebony. C.1850 in date approx. The top lifts up to reveal a writing and storage area's. The inside is in Ebony and has a replaced new green leather with a gold decorative boarder. Inner flap lifts up for storage of papers etc. Inside also contains a pair of inkwell pot's with screw off lid's one for black the other for red ink. A lift out lidded compartment for pens.Nibs etc. A great shaped twin row area for small note papers in various sizes. Inside has two hidden secret small drawers. They sit behind a wooden ... morepanel which can be opened by slightly pulling up the division on the right hand side as shown. The box has rounded corners in brass to top.Back and front corners. Mahogany Brass Bound Victorian Campaign Writing Slope 2 Brass inkwells 1855
It is highly crafted.High end very strong/sturdy. All the brass is firm and strong Both the brass inkwells are in good condition and they have screw locks. There are storage compartiments between the ink wells( one of them for pens) and 2 open catches to keep one of the writing surfaces in place. Side'secret' drawer with handle and handle the other side for lifting it. Fully opened it measures 57 x50 cms. Depth at rear is 15 cms and 3.5 cms at the front. Closed the writing slope meaures 50x28 cms and is 20 cms deep. It has a green blaze base. The plaque on the lid says' Presented to the Revd. Antique English Brass Bound Rosewood Writing Slope / Lap Desk - Secret Drawers
A very handsome late William IV or early Victorian writing slope or lap desk dating to around 1830/1840. Made from Rosewood. The box is beautifully brass bound with a quality screwed construction and flush military style handles either side. The top is inset with a shaped brass cartouche retaining the original initials of the original owner, I think H W. The top has some old marks/ bruising which I have shown purely for accuracy. The box opens to reveal a leather writing surface with gold embossing, there is storage below both top and bottom sections for stationery and letters. The brass pin to the side can be removed to open the side drawer running the width of the box. Here for auction is a very unusual 19c inlaid mahogany campaign writing slope with pull out side drawers. Each side has a pull out drawer with compartments with small sections. Writing slopes feature a gorgeous outside with a lock to secure important papers. Inside is a slanted writing surface a storage area for paper and an area for storing ink and quills. This writing slope is a box made from beautiful mahogany wood. The front and top of the box are decorated with gorgeous brass inlays. These inlays and the lovely. Wispy grain ... moreand color of the wood really go well together. There is a working lock and key present. The interior of the writing slope is covered in green felt. This writing surface is probably not original to the piece, it was most likely covered in leather at some point. There is a remaining ink pot(it is hard to find slopes with ink pots remaining) and a lift up cover for the long, skinny storage area by the ink pot. Both sides of the slope lift up to reveal storage areas originally used for storing letters and stationary. We have given this box a good condition rating. There are three wood repairs: one on the bottom front left corner. On the back top right corner, and a skinny section along the middle of the bottom of the back side. The top of the box also has a slight warp to it as you can see in the photos but this does not affect the box closing, opening, or functioning/displaying perfectly. It is a great piece for display, especially with the intricate brass inlays and stunning mahogany wood. This mahogany antique writing slope is quite beautiful! C.1850 in date approx. The top lifts up to reveal a writing and storage area's. The inside is in Ebony and has a replaced new red leather with a gold decorative boarder and corner motifs. Both inner flap lifts up for storage of papers etc. Inside also contains a pair of inkwell pot's with screw off lid's. A flip out lidded compartment for pens.Nibs etc. Inside one of the flaps has two hidden secret small drawers. They sit behind a wooden panel which can be opened by pulling one of the inkwell divisions upwards and this releases a sprung loaded panel to reveal them as shown in pictures. Charming Petite Ladies Travelling Writing Slope This is a very nice. Unusual double-hinged writing slope in a reduced size to befit a Victorian lady. Measuring 8½" x 7" x 2½" 215mm x 180mm x 65mm) the slope opens out at the front to reveal the sloped blotter writing area whilst the back folds upright to form the correspondence rack for paper and cards. At the centre is a lidded compartment for pens and a 1½" square compartment for an inkwell(not present) It is on a wooden frame with black leather covering. Hinges and lock are brass(key not present) The condition is very good for age with just slight rubbing on the exterior corners. Fabulous Coromandel writing slope secret drawers & ink bottles
A truly fabulous mid Victorian domed topped writing slope made of veneered Coromandel wood on to a mahogany ground. Both the lid and key escutcheon have a wonderful abalone inlay which is all complete(so rare) It has a working lock. A replacement leather skiver with both blind and gold tooling and a pair of Victorian style quality brass screw topped ink bottles. Additional features are two secret sovereign drawers and five storage slots for stationery i.e. envelopes and writing paper. The exterior is total original with no restoration. C 1889 writing slope and stationary box complete with ink wells including a very rare clamp down well. The item was presented as a gift in 1890 to Johnothan Lancaster Master of Prince Frederick Masonic Lodge 307 in Memory of Thomas Whitaker JP also a previous Master of the same lodge. see reference in Picturs. Given the style of the leather top of the slope it is highly possible that this slope was used in the Lodge office. which would account for the lack of a lid as it would not be needed for a permanent fixture) the provenance is therefore check able. This slope and stationary box was likely to be a bespoke made to order piece so will be unique( I stand to be corrected) there is no kept and sadly no makers name as far as I can see. It could be an important piece for collectors of Masonic memorabilia or existing masons. Large Wooden Writing Box/Slope with carry handles and draw- Repair/Restoration A nice quality writing slope in need of a little repair or restoration if so desired. The most noticeable issue is the split across the top. It looks like there is a historic attempt to patch this up at some stage. It has a useful draw to the bottom. Internally it has some moulding around the internal edges of the box and externally on the draw and lid. The writing area is currently covered in a purple material(split in the middle) Comes with ink well without lid. I have included a number of photos and these probably describe the item better than I can and form part of the description. Offering a fabulous and quite rare French Boulle writing box known as a"SLOPE" in 19th Century Victorian England and France. Highly complex cutout brasswork with reddish shell. Somewhat lighter on the upper lid. Usual indices of age such as crazing in the shell, some tarnish which can be polished out, some tiny gilding losses and minute nicks all of which are characteristics of such a box over 150 years old. High grain rosewood interior is in near perfect condition. Two original and very uniquely embossed brass-capped inkwells included. I don't know if the velvet writing surface is original but its condition is excellent and consistent with the rest of the interior's condition. This is a very nice traveling or slope lap desk. The wood type is unknown but it has the appearance of Rosewood or Mahogany. The top edge corners are inlaid and there is a silver-like shield in the top center. The desk has two original inkwells. A beveled ruler and key. The vintage is unknown but I would guess early 1900s. Hopefully, interested collectors will know the vintage better than I do. The condition is good with some flaws. There is a tight split in the lid. One piece of inlay is missing, the"keeper" on the writing surface is missing, and the ribbon to open the bottom writing surface is missing. It was smaller than this one and was only two fold. Not three-fold like this one, and it was priced at $3,000. Based on that price, this one should be priced at $4,000. Amboyna is a rare wood. Just found another one, at $2,817. Which seems like a later model. 1 8 lb. 7 oz. 19 3/8” X 11” X 7 5/8” Most unusual military box. Undoubtedly belonged to a general or nobleman, due to its size and very fine quality. This box probably cost as much in cash as what the average man earned in a year back then. Three-fold boxes were special and expensive. So far fewer of them were made than two-fold boxes. Amboyna has always been a rare wood. And few campaign boxes were veneered with it. The finish on the ... morebox is original and in extraordinarily fine condition, hasn’t been touched- it feels silky smooth. The brass has been cleaned, as it had no finish on it and did not look good. Unusual also is that every edge of the box is protected by a strip of brass. Quite rare and the sign of the highest quality boxes. Box is complete with working secret compartment and three drawers with original ribbon pulls. There is a new writing surface. As the old one was gone, as well as new ribbon pulls. New burlap on the bottom of the box. Included are two period inkwells that came with the box. Which are smaller than their compartments. Although there has been some shrinkage to the wood of the box, there is no shrinkage crack, as is so common to boxes of that period. A few dings to the brass. Only the bottom brass strips on the front and back are buckled, due to shrinkage of the wood underneath. A couple of very small damaged/repaired spots of veneer, esp. at the upper right corner of the drawer. The drawer sticks slightly. Repair of trim around keyhole of writing slope. Stunning Victorian Blue Leather Writing Slope Superb fine quality Victorian Leather Writing Box these are called many different names such as writing slopes. Writing boxes, lap desks or a portable travelling desk. An example such as this would certainly have been part of the furniture in a Wealthy household of the day maybe a landlord or merchant for the storage of all his transactions and other records. The condition is outstanding as you can see from the photographs the interior has a lift out tray which has fantastic round brass spring loaded handles. The tray has a lift out leather lined pen tray and another smaller one that would have held nibs underneath both of these are further storage spaces. There are two compartments for inkwells one containing a glass topped inkwell which is later than the box itself and two larger storage compartments. ... moreUnderneath the tray is a large leather lined storage compartment which would have held papers and other writing related materials. The lid has the leather writing surface this is held in place with two brass slide clasps and beneath is more storage space which holds a lovely removable blotter folder. This is a really fantastic writing box that is of excellent quality and would have been a very expensive item when made. I have included a lovely"rolling ruler" which I think is a must with all writing boxes and a little black dip pen. There is even part of the original label underneath which I always think is a lovely feature. This is a superb example of this early type of writing case. In lovely original condition and ready to use. It dates from around 1860 to 1890 and would add charm and grace to any room as a delightful piece of desk top furniture. The lock is a"Bramah" which is always a sign of quality although I do not have a key for this one. This item is in wonderful condition and has been fully restored in order to show its striking beauty. The writing slope is made of solid wood and outside is covered by noble wood leaves. Making up a nice pattern by combining different tones and veneers. This piece keeps also the original lock and key. Which can be operated like the first day of use. A nice feature of this article is the presence of three small secret drawers inside. To find them we must lift the base’s lid and remove the rectangular plank that closes the inner front, where the compartments are located. Then we will see three small delicate drawers with their corresponding white paste knobs. Outside the writing slope is covered by rosewood ... moreveneers. The top is embellished by a rectangular mahogany frame. Separated from the rosewood panel by a slim yellow wooden inlay. In the middle there is a nicely cut brass plate embedded in the wood, fit to engrave the owner’s initials. The wood that covers the piece is in strikingly good condition and the French polish that protects it, perfectly restored, enhances the dark brown color of the rosewood and the mahogany’s reddish tone. Inside the article is made of light-colored solid wood and the writing surface is lined with green felt, very well preserved. Just over this surface we can see the classical compartments designed to store the different accessories: inkpots, dryer, pens… One of them has a delicate wooden lid with a tiny white knob. The compartment for the pens has a concave detachable bottom, under which we find the writing slope’s key. When closed the article boasts a sober design, rectangular in shape and highly appealing. Classy looking campaign writing slope in Rosewood with excellent patina. Colour and grain. Brass Corner protectors. Cartouche, key Escutcheon and flush fitting carrying handles all in good clean order. There are some knocks and scratches and some splits to the veneer on the lid but really nothing that detracts from the quality of this box. I have taken 12 photos for you to study and judge this box for yourself. Inside the box has 2 inkwells compartments with bottles. Stamp slope pen tray and lidded compartment for spare nibs etc. The secret drawers are accessed by removing the timber panel below the inkwells by pulling it forward. And writing accessory area across the rear, with a hinged lid, lined with wine velvet. Note the glass covered window in front of the inkwell, marked in gold behind the window with"Copying- Red" Black" The 3 inkwell lids have carved cow bone knobs. Workmanship is excellent! Size is 10 1/2" x 6" x 4" tall. Weight is 28.6 ounces. Condition is very good with some usage marks. And ink staining commensurate with the age. A gorgeous 19th Century(Regency era? burr walnut folding travel desk with brass inlay and two secret drawers. At the top of the writing surface are three compartments for stamps. Inkwell and pens. Included is the original inkwell with brass cap, and writing instruments and accessories which came with the box. There an open storage area beneath each half of the writing surface and a panel that hides two secret drawers, which are accessed by the careful removal of panels next the inkwell to activate the release spring. Condition as noted above: This writing slope is in very good to excellent condition for its age. The exterior wood and brass inlay and hinges are in excellent condition. NOTE: the key is missing. The interior is in very good to just shy of excellent condition. The brass hinges all work fine. The secret compartment latch and boxes ... moreall work fine. The leather writing surface has dried over the years. But looks great and the gilt edging design looks very nice. The leather has come up a bit at the middle where it closes and can easily be glued down. There is also a slight crack along the width of the leather writing surface at the bottom of the slope. American country. handcrafted pieces from the last quarter of the 19th Century can be a real joy when the maker was both skilled and creative. I don’t know the name of the maker, but this tabletop/countertop desk box was surely his own personal tour de force. The primary wood is walnut with secondary pine. And if forced to guess, I’d say the diamonds inlaid top and front are apple or some ... moreother fruitwood. There is a 3 ¼” level surface at the top with a gallery of posts and arches to keep things such as a bottle of ink or a candle from sliding off the back or sides. Plus. It is just the right size– not too big– not too small. The box is approximately 18 ¾” wide. 14 ½” from front to back, and 10 ½” tall to the top of the 2 ¼” gallery. Because of wood’s tendency to shrink over the decades. The male and female pieces of the lock no longer meet precisely. It is an easy fix involving setting the lock out a fraction of an inch. However, I’ve done it often enough to know that if one forces it closed, sometimes it simply refuses to open again. That is why, in some of my images, you will notice I removed the lock. Better safe than sorry. The bottom is good old American pine. And the nails are square for the most part. Notice the clever cut-outs. Which allow for easy closing– no rubbing against the hinges. Very elegant example of these rare slopes. The brass has been carefully cleaned and polished and looks wonderful and still has a good aged tarnish to it. The inside slope skiver is original in purple velvet and in very good condition. The slope interior is crafted with a beautiful grain of rosewood. In very good condition with some markings of course commensurate with age.
