JOSE PINAL MEXICO CARVED WOOD CHARGING BULL FIGURE SCULPTURE
This is a Vintage Jose Pinal Mexico Carved Wood Charging Bull Figure Sculpture. The bull is signed"J. Pinal" and"Hecho En Mexico" The bull is nicely carved out of wood with what looks to be real animal horns(not sure what kind of wood or type of horns they are) The wood is a nice medium reddish brown. The color of the wood maybe slightly off in the photos. But close enough to the first photo. Although I am not an expert on Jose Pinal and this is my first time selling one of his pieces and not sure what to look for, I would say that the figure is in pretty good to fairly pretty good vintage condition. The figure has some dirt, dust, cobwebs and film from being handled, could use some cleaning. The right horn has a split crack the can be seen from the top(please see photo) The split crack goes diagonally from the center ... moreof the horn to the top extending 1/2" long from it's head. Although there is this split crack on the right horn, it doesn't seem to effect the strength or integrity. Also the tip of the right horn has chipped off, but there is enough horn left to still give it a nice look. There are some minor scuff spots, but they do not distract too much from the overall look of the bull. Overall it is still a nice sculpture! if you are not too picky about the flaws mentioned in the description) The figure measures 6" high by 10" long from horns to tail by about 4" wide from shoulder to shoulder. Some of the lights, reflections and shadows that you see on the figure are just in the photo. Photos may not show all flaws mentioned in description. Only chiefs were buried, but their bones, particularly the skull, were later exhumed and placed in a basket, the bwete, together with magical objects including shells and seeds as well as such a carved figure, or reliquary. Antique CHINESE 17" Carved Wood Mythical LOHAN FIGURE - Ming, Qing, or Republic?
Up for auction with no reserve is this wonderfully expressive mythical Lohan figure from China's rich artistic past. Whether this piece is early 20th century. 19th century, or perhaps even 18th century would take someone with far more expertise than I possess. But I do know that this beautiful figure has been in my family since the 1920's or'30's, handed down from my grandmother to my mother and then to me. It stands 17 inches high. Is 6 inches across at the base and weighs just under 4 pounds. There's about 48 inches of what I call"wire rope trim" on the hems of the robe, the sleeves, and the neckline, with about a total of 5 or 6 inches of it missing. It may or may not actually be metallic- could be a heavy varnished thread or whatever- but I'm not about to rip a piece off to find out. There are also three ... moremetallic-appearing medallions of approximately 1 1/2 inches across that are applied on the robe- front, sleeve, and rear. The surface of the entire piece appears to be an original combination of gilt and paint and now has a wonderful and consistent patina. With the singular exception of the underside of the base which appears to have been painted a reddish brown at some later time. I am not aware of anyone in my family having done this so I would guess some well-meaning soul who wanted to protect the unfinished raw wood underneath must have painted it probably about 100 years ago. And, to me, the patina on the rest of the figure looks at least another century older than that. If anyone has a clue as to the true age or origin, please let me know so I can include that information here. There is a small. Tight crack on the head as well as a 1/2 inch chip out of the surface also on the head as shown in the photos. Other than the issues already discussed which are all shown in the photos, there are no cracks, breaks, damages, repairs or blemishes whatsoever. With his whimsical, knowing, bemused expression, this figure has a most impressive presence and is always a joy to behold. I

And I have not seen another one like this. The Figure is finely carved with a nice lotus carved base. There is a slot in the back side like it may have had something sticking out of the back as some point. The figure shows a dark early patina throughout and I am sure would conservatively date to the 19th century, if not earlier. The Figure has some paint loss, revealing a green paint underneath and is missing the hands. The figure is otherwise in good original condition. Beautiful facial features, a crack is on front of jacket, I was told the crack developed from moist humid climate to a dry climate. Top right edge of hat brim has small crack, doesn't detract. Large carving stands 14" tall. Bought off an elderly man who traveled the world. Said he watched the carver make this and gave him $55 because he said he looked like he needed the money. Antique Italian Creche Wood and Paper Mache Gentleman figure
This Creche figure is 13 ½ inch tall man. Possibly a wise man, most likely circa the late 18th or early 19th century, has a wooden head, hands with plaster or paper mache, and lower legs with carved boots with one boot missing. The body is cloth with original metal trim. There is some wear on the clothing and a few worn spots on face and hands but in pretty good condition for it's age. Very neat piece with a heap of character. There also is a wire that is connected to the head, possibly for display purposes. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions. A highly detailed. Hand-carved wooden dog figurine in the form of a Dachshund, most likely German or Swiss, early 20thC. Unmarked, but certainly in the Black Forest style, this piece is well-crafted from soft pine or linden. The level of intricate detail and overall proportion is quite perfect. The overall condition is very good with age-appropriate wear throughout. The front and rear paws on the left side have small chips; there is an area of loss on the right ear; and an area of repair on the front right paw. There also appears to be a few areas with a gold finish(forehead& rear hindquarters) Please see photos for details and further description. The two main Karen groups in Thailand are the ... moreSgaw and Pwo Karen. The Karen Hill tribes Trust works with the largest. The Sgaw Karen, who live in the Khun Yuam and Mae La Noi districts of the Mae Hong Son Province. Their history in northern Thailand can be traced back to the twelfth century. It is thought that Karen originally came from Tibet. Through China, and eventually to Thailand. In Thailand they mostly live in the more remote mountainous areas due west of Chiang Mai. They are subsistence farmers who live at peace with nature and the forests. The Karen settled in what is termed the'middle level' in the mountains. Namely between 800 and 1,800 meters. They were semi-nomadic people using swidden(slash and burn) farming methods. Moving around on a seven year cycle. However, around 1968 the Government insisted that they must stop moving around. The carving depicts girl farmer holding a basket with 2 geeses on her sides. It is well carved with inlaid glass eyes both for the farmer girl and geeses. A very fine detailed hardwood carving signed on the bottom. APPROX. SIZE: High: 10.5” Width: 4.5” WEIGHT: 500g or 1.1 lb without packaging. CONDITION: A minor age crack at the back of the base. This Buddha image is called Budai(Chinese) or Hotei(Japanese) The name means“cloth sack” and comes from the bag that he is conventionally depicted as carrying. He is usually identified with(or as an incarnation of) Maitreya. So much so that the Budai image is one of the main forms in which Maitreya is depicted in East Asia.
