I spend a lot of time in the summer searching out wood burls and this one is from the northern Iron wood tree. The burls grow around the outside of many of these trees and the grain is very tight and figured. Pictures can't capture the beauty of these little gems. With very little shaping. A Goldeneye duck head poped out of this burl with it's distinctive head and bill shape. The bill has a tiger eye or fiddleback grain pattern that shimmers when turned in the light! 1950s Finland Folk Art Piece : Saarijarven Farmer Paavo Wood Carving
Up for auction is a small wood carving that stands approximately 6 3/4 inches tall; measures 4 3/4 inches long; is about 2 inches wide. It is in excellent condition. The carving was produced in Finland. There is no date on the bottom but this carving was obtained from a Finnish relative who was the original purchaser of the piece(in Finland) and indicated the 1950s as the approximate creation date. The relative indicated that it represented Farmer Paavo. Paavo is a character created by the national poet of Finland. This carving was sent to our family from Finland and my guess is that the ink written was written by the relative in order to explain the carving to us since none of us spoke Swedish.

Some of the original paint is still on there. I would call this a shelf sitter and it kind of rocks. It almost looks like American Primitive Carving. The numbers on the bottom make me think it came from a museum collection. 5"x 1 1/3" All these pieces have a great patina. Some are marked. This is from an estate auction from a couple who traveled the world in the 1950-60s. So I can say it is at least that old, and probably older. Please view all pictures. African WOOD carving statue - Folk Art - Old Bust with head-dress- wooden figure
I inherited this from my dad and know very little about it. A unique face and head-dress on a delicate neck and sturdy base! I can see that it is carved wood(don't know what kind) and is stained a dark color. It has an African style face and head-dress. I don't know if it was made in Africa. It looks old because it shows some wear and tear like rubbed areas and what seems to be 2 chips off back edge of the head-dress. I'm not sure if this could have been there when it was made. I think this would look real nice if it were refinished. Of course the wear it shows does add a special antique look. There does seem to be a hairline crack down the side of the nose to the chin and up the forehead.see photos) This could have been there too from the wood itself. Old Eskimo carved Totem Native American folk Art Fossilized carving
8 1/4" x 7/8" totem base is 2" ask condition questions early. Old Fossilized materials 1920s I presume.It is all hand carved and pigmented. You can see there is some wear and natural cracks in the surface not all the way through. It appears to be joined together near the base.It is also missing a beak.The piece may have beed reglued to the 2" base as I see a small ammount of glue.The detail and animal totems are stunning.The top has the original wings.They are pegged in. The figures are all hand carved with excellent details. They are both dressed in colorful garb The man is sporting a suit and tie and a cane. It measures 5 1/2 inches tall. It is 5 inches wide and about 1 3/4 inches deep. It is in very nice condition with one tiny flaw. There is a small split in part of the cane. It is half way through the cane and the cane is still intact. Besides this there is not another thing wrong with it. It is signed Gunnarsson faintly on the bottom. And I had wonderful luck at this weekend’s flea market- some really really unique items, you don’t want to miss! Well. This wonderful piece of original hand carved wood folk art HAD its complete tag when I purchased it at the flea market- but somehow- between there and home, it broke off- leaving not much to tell the story. What I do remember is that it said that it was made in Alaska- and the signature of the artist is carved into the wood at the back- it reads, Penti 1991. It's a sweet carved image of an Eskimo child, and there's a loop on the backside for hanging on the wall. Measuring 6 1/2" diameter, it is 3/4" thick, and is in excellent solid and sturdy condition. There's ... moresome wear to the finish and the wood- scratches, scrapes, dings, dark spots and light spots. It also shows some soile and dirt from hanging around all these years- all giving it a rustic primitive charm. No other issues- this one is lovely and sweet. Please ask if you have any questions. 19TH CENTURY FOLK ART WOOD CARVING BUST OF MAN FOUND IN READING, PA.
An original 19th century circa 1870's-1890's miniature wood carved bust of a man. The man has a beard& is wearing a shirt with an open collar& a suit jacket. The man has his eyes closed& is slightly sticking his tongue out. The bust is complete as originally made without arms. The one piece wood carving terminates at the bottom with a circular pedestal. There are a number of in period chips missing off of the wood pedestal. All of the areas of the missing wood have excellent old patina. There is some wear& a there are a few little scratches to the carving. This carved bust turned up in an early Reading. Pa. estate a number of decades ago with a group of assorted 19th century objects. We have enjoyed the carving for decades on our shelf& have just recently decided to offer it for sale. We have never been fortunate ... moreenough to pin down this early carving to a specific carver. So, we are offering it at a modest price. Perhaps someone out there in eBay land will know the specific carver that made it. This charming little carving measures a mere 3 1/8 inches tall by 1 7/8 inches across his shoulders& 1 1/2 inches deep. The carving has a very pleasing patina from over a century of natural aging& also from being handled.
