Produced by the London maker Parkins& Gotto of Oxford Street the key which is original presses in releasing the hinged lid. The side panel drops down revealing a number of stationary slots and three small draws probably for stamps. The lid section doubles as a writing slope and has a small clasp which when opened reveals another storage area. As the door opens a spring loaded inkwell and pen holder slides out of the box as shown in the photographs. The makers mark is shown embossed in gold on the inside writing slope. There is a brass recessed handle to the top for carrying this wonderful box. To the outside there is wear associated with age but no major damages, there is also a storage or traveling label probably of the original owner. It belonged to my mother who inherited it from a Scottish Aunt I don't think the name on the box was hers39;s. A wonderful example that would look wonderful in any home or made a great addition to any collection. It is of a compact size. Which is unusual, and its original writing surface is still on the slope, which is also not usual– the writing surfaces of boxes 230 years old rarely survive. The lectern feature usually is found only in boxes from 1780-1790, and not a lot of them were made. The pen tray lifts out with ribbon pulls, and new ribbon pulls have been installed on the slope as well. The ledge for use of box as lectern when not employed is plugged into the upper wall of the lower part of the slope. There has been shrinkage of about 1/16” Resulting in a small shrinkage crack on top, which is barely noticeable. Boxes of this age usually shrink ... moremore, up to 1/4” All original brass is present, and the lock is sound but without a key, which can be made. As found- thought originally it was an antique and now am thinking after closer inspection it might be a replica of something that was in a museum(because of the sticker on the bottom) the paint appears to have been hand done and it looks as though someone lovingly created it with an eye for detail as it took me awhile to decide it was not an antique- I do believe it to be a vintage piece and is from an estate sale in New Hampshire- I believe it is supposed to be a writing desk though with the knob where it is would be difficult to use as such- not sure why there is a hole in the back as can be seen in the picture unless it was to put something inside that had a cord- your guess is as good as mine but if you do know would love to find out- curiosity more than anything. A very fine. Antique 19th Century Burled Walnut Slope or Lap Desk with original inkwell and two secret compartments. Closed. Box measures 6 1/8"H x 13 5/8"W x 9 1/8"D. Opened. Box measures 1 1/2"4 1/2"H x 13 5/8"W x 18 1/2"D. Leather writing surface measures 13" x 10 1/2" One side of the writing surface is spring-loaded for opening. It appears to have been repaired at some point. top can be opened with a small screwdriver inserted and sliding sideways from left to right. The second side opens easily with a fingernail. Revealing a second wood panel. This second panel is removable by pulling up the small side wall that houses the inkwell. Offering a fabulous and quite rare French Boulle Writing Box. Also known as a"Slope" and dating to early to mid 19th C. Highly complex cutout brasswork with reddish shell, a darker red on the lid with bright red on the upper lid and front. Sides and back are ebonized to black. Wood is mahogany and fine polished interior veneers. Everything is original and the interior boards on which the original velvet surface is mounted are hinged and so will not come apart. Main lid shows the usual crazing, though moderate and doesn't detract from the beauty of the piece. No fading or water damage. High grain rosewood interior is in near perfect condition. Antique Mahogany Table Top Writing/Slope Lap Desk Mid 1800's Large With Key
This beautiful mahogany sloped lap desk was purchased at an estate sale recently. It has been dated back to mid 19th century. When opened. It features 3- bird's eye maple veneered drawers. The middle drawer is actually a false face. With a hidden drawer behind it that slides out to the side. It does come with a workable key, and the lock appears to be the right period. However, I am not completely sure. As I stated in description. It looks to have been restored at one time. It is fairly large, measuring 21" L x 19" W x 11" H, and weighs about 17 lbs. 19th CENTURY ENGLISH MAHOGANY& BRASS FOLDING LAP DESK WRITING SLOPE BOX Description: Antique English Folding Lap Writing Desk(Slope) Dates c.19 th C. Made of Mahogany. This Slope has Brass corners, top and bottom and also brass braces midway down to secure it properly, so the box is in very sound condition. The hinges and lock are also brass(have no key) There is also a shaped brass plate on the top with engraved initials–looks like an‘AT’ Inside opens up to reveal the leatherette writing space, there is also a place for inkwells and a curved compartment for pens. The bottom compartment opens up to reveal an open compartment but it has 2 small draws that fit underneath the pens compartment and are somewhat secret. The top compartment has no fittings but has beautiful grained mahogany- see photos. Size: outside box measurements 13 ¾” ... morex 9 ½” and 5“ h. Condition: It is original antique condition. The brass is left as is unpolished. There are scratches some fairly deep, mostly on the lid. Also inside there is a devise which is to spring up the top, but does not seems to work and it has been opened by pulling up on the wood, and on the right corner it has caused an area where the veneer is starting to pull away from the base. All are relatively easy problems to fix. This is a Slope for someone looking for a box in original condition. It is price according to its condition. Magnificent Antique French Boulle Tortoiseshell and Brass Inlaid marquetry. Writers Lap Box. c.1850"Ecritoire" 14” wide. 10" Front to back, 4.25 High and weighs 4.1Lbs. This rear Victorian Mahogany. Rosewood Box with superb brass marquetry over beautiful variations of red toned Tortoise like background is offered in fine presentable condition with a small areas of loss to a small section of the boulle work on the top edge and the top part with some minor losses around the lower corners and general wear. It has a leather base. This beautiful sample of Marquetry can be a wonderful addition for a serious collector or one who appreciates such rear finds. All parts of it are obviously original. This is lovely antique folding writing box dating from the 19th century. The box has a fine Boulle work folding cover securing a fold out ... morewriting top also decorated with marquetry top. The rectangular wooden lid for the pens can be lifted by a bone knob inside the desk. In some areas the marquetry is missing and part of the of the embossed metal edge on the top lid. The writing top covered with green velvet writing area has been lovingly used and there are some torn areas. The box has two inkwell compartments to either side with one additional compartment for other stationery accessories. The box is marked with Initials O.S. The hinges are beautifully carved. The surrounding lacquered wood is in very good condition without cracks.

Early 19th century rosewood and mother of pearl table top work box/cabinet. SIZE: 13 inches wide x 13 inches tall x 9 inches deep The box is in very good condition considering it is approximately 200 years old. After opening the lid on this charming box you are greeted by four drawers with carved mother of pearl handles and two leather gilded covers. Under the lid there is a sewing section with space for five cotton reels and several lidded compartments and 2 needle books. There is a little latch that reveals a mirror surrounded by beading and a little area you can keep paperwork. Letters. Top drawer is a dummy drawer. Second drawer is just empty to keep bits and pieces, third drawer is double layered for jewelry, the forth drawer is my personal favorite with a writing slope and two original glass inkwells and also the antique feathered quill, ... moreonce you unfold the slope there is a little tab you can lift for storage. Please see the following that i list all known defects: OUTSIDE OF THE BOX: The mother of pearl is in great condition from what i can see there might only be 1 tiny piece lacking from a circular inlay on the foot and surrounding the keyhole seems to be bigger than it should be. Rose wood seems in good condition but has some minor defects but i will be very critical please see photos- TOP: slight crack along the left side. Some beading lacking along left. FRONT: left top corner 2 small chips. Top right corner slight raise in beading(possible old repair? RIGHT SIDE: Some beading lacking REAR: Several cracks running up the wood(possibly from central heating? bottom right some beading is missing. Top left small chip LEFT SIDE: tiny section of beading lacking in bottom corner. Hair line cracks in wood(possible central heating) bottom right corner beading raised slightly from possible old repair? Antique Georgian Rosewood writing box or slope. Decoration & woodwork all good!
A true late Georgian Writing Box sometimes called a SLOPE. Of ladies proportions, with all wood features intact. The plaque on top has never been engraved so if someone buys it they can have their own name inscribed if they wish. One of my husband's many collected items. This one because he said it was SOLID figured rosewood. No ink bottle is present. But stamps slide container and hinged ruler/pen compartment are intact as shown in pix. A shrinkage crack in the box top as clearly shown in pix. Otherwise the box itself is in excellent condition, even for it's age, and the crack seems to enhance it's aged quality. DIMENSIONS ARE: 12 inches wide by 8.75 inches long by 5 inches high. When folded out it takes up 18 inches long by 8.75 inches wide.

Beautiful writing box made from wood and brass. Approx measurements 30cm x 23cm. Brass inlets on top lid. Top corners and the middle of the corners of the bottom part. Lock and hinges also seem to be brass. There is a little ink pot with a metal lid. Beautifully made but there is some damage; the hinges are broken. There is no key, the writing slope has ripped in the middle and there are general signs of useage. Still a wonderful box. Can be collected from Leeds. LS6. Please look at my other items. Description A FABULOUS LOOKING ANTIQUE VICTORIAN BURR WALNUT& MAHOGANY TUNBRIDGE WARE WRITING SLOPE BOX Measures 14" x 9" x 5.25" The reverse. Top and front is finished with absolutely stunning burr walnut veneer; the two sides are in mahogany. Features two broad bands of exceptionally fine Tunbridge Ware marquetry design. Together with a Mother of Pearl cartouche to the lid surrounded by marquetry work, which is repeated around the lock escutheon. Condition: The box itself is in exceptionally good condition. With no losses to the Tunbridge Ware etc. and the colour, patination and graining to the burr walnut is about as good as any I have ever seen ~ really does look wonderful! The interior requires a re-fit as it is missing the original slope; there is a split in the pine base( easily rectified) Very straightforward interior ... morerenovation to restore to a fabulous writing slope. alternatively it could also be converted very easily to an all-purpose jewellery box. Antique Grand Victorian Campaign Rosewood And Brass Writing Slope Box. 1860 Antique Beautiful Grand Victorian Rosewood And Brass Campaign Writing Slope. 1860 This is an interesting antique writing slope of good proportions in stunning Rosewood. C.1860 in date approx. The top lifts up to reveal a writing and storage area's. The inside main surface is in Coromandel and has a new replacement red leather with a gold decorative boarder and corner motifs. Both inner flaps lift up for storage of papers etc. One has a fully working lock and key. Inside also contains a pair of new replacement Victorian copy inkwell pots with screw off lid's. A flip out lidded compartment for pens.Nibs etc. Inside one of the flaps has two hidden secret small drawers. They sit behind a wooden panel which can be opened by pulling one of the inkwell divisions ... moreupwards and this releases a sprung loaded panel to reveal them as shown in pictures. The box has superb brass rounded corners these protect the box from damage and the top and front has twin fine inner brass lines. Giving it some nice detail. Fantastic brass escutcheon to front and matching blank center cartouche to top and both are surrounded by a fine brass line. Fully working quality stamped rare Bra mah lock from London and key(Bramah keys are expensive to get replaced) These locks are superb quality and are anti pick in design. The key has to be pressed in to turn the pressure plate inside. All brass work is in well maintained condition. There is no mistaking its unique quality and design. Which is sure to make it a treasured piece by any discerning collector. Excellent polish and timbers with no losses with well waxed shine very well maintained condition. Very well used and opens to a large compartment with an inkwell spot on both ends with lidded section in the middle. The key is long gone but. it looks like it takes a universal barrel key! It measures approx. 12" x 8" x 3-3/4" high and the overall condition would commensurate with it's age and use with multiple ink stains inside, one corner has a stress crack that makes the lid set just a little off from the base and wear to the wood and finish, hand writing along the inside of the lid. Antique English Brass Bound Coromandel Writing Slope / Lap Desk c1860
Antique English Brass Bound Coromandel Writing Slope/ Lap Desk c1860 A handsome military or campaign style writing slope. Beautifully brass bound around all the edges and brass straps running across the top and down the front. There is a brass inlaid plaque. Either side has a heavy cast military flush handle, there is a drawer running the width of the box accessed from one side but has to be released from the inside by removing the brass pin; this ensures the drawer can't be opened when the box is locked up. The box opens to form a writing slope sometimes known as a lap desk, this would certainly not be put on one's lap as the size and weight is prohibitive. The black leather has gold tooling, both sides opening to reveal large compartments underneath for papers and the like. The top section has a lock with working key. The top section ... morealso has a bank of three secret drawers operated pulling the divider between the right hand side inkwell and the sloped pen nib compartment. The box comes with two fabulous period inkwells. All in all a really good writing box in excellent condition, complete with the two keys. Certainly a show-stopper measuring 19 3/4" x 11" x 8 1/4" while closed.

A Carved Anglo Indian Trifold Writing Slope from Ceylon This Anglo Indian box is constructed from solid ebony the top sides front and back are profusely carved, the carving has a floral entwined design, the top opens to reveal the white dot decoration on the inside of the top, there are a pair of lidded compartment for inkwells and two more lidded compartments and a circular ruler all with the white dot decoration, the writing surfaces have voids below for paper work, under the inkwell section is a panel when removed hides three secret drawers this carving and white dot decoration comes from the Galle district from Ceylon this box was made in the mid nineteenth there is some shrinkage cracks on the box this is the nature of the timber 41cm x 22cm x 14cm. Has lots of character and patina. In working condition with two ink wells and the ORIGINAL KEY! There are storage areas under the top and bottom of the fold out writing surfaces. As well as some hidden storage under the storage trays. There is normal wear on this item for it's age. There are various light scratches on the entire outside. A couple deeper scratches(1 on top) and the wood shows signs of age and shrinkage mostly in the form of small cracks on the top surface of the box. C.1840 in date. The top lifts up to reveal a writing and storage area's. The inside main surface has a new replacement tan leather with superb 18ct gold decorative boarders and corner motifs. Both inner flaps lift up for storage of papers etc. One has a fully working lock and key. Inside also contains a pair of new Victorian copy replacement inkwells with screw off lids. A lift out Ebony lidded compartment for pens and two smaller ones for nibs etc. The outside of the box has superb brass rounded corners to edges these protect the box from damage giving it some nice detail and protection ... morewhile being moved and used. Fantastic shaped brass escutcheon to front and matching center cartouche to top which is un-engraved. Fully working quality main lock and one key. All brass work is in well maintained condition. Antique Tiger Maple? Veneer Covered Writing Slope Box w/Mother of Pearl & Inlay
i can't find a maker name on this. it has some issures but worth the repairs. it has a veneer covering that sort of looks like tiger maple which has splits and edge chips. there is a nicely carved design on top with some of the inlaid pieces still attached. there is also a border trim that has pieces of mother of pearl and silvertone(not sure if it is sterling) strips inlaid also. there are pieces of both missing in spots. on the inside there is a velour covered lid that folds down for storage and then is held in place with a latch for writing on the slope. also the bottom lid lifts for storage. under that lid there is some issues. Like a piece split off the edge but there. i don't have the key to this. and finally the bottom veneer is missing. this box is 13 x 9 in. wide and 5 in. tall.
