See photos 6, 7& 8. The top moulding at the top reveals a s mall secret drawer. See photo 4. The drawers have litt le bone knobs which differ very slightly in size. Please take time to study the photographs to gain an appreciation of this unusual and very col lectable cabinet. The rosewood grain and colour looks rich in real life. Flash photo graphs do not do this cabinet justice. I believe this cabinet is all original including the brass hinges and lock which is in working order with replacement key provided. The con dition of th is very unusual and rare piece is quite exceptional considering the age with no major damage. Cracking, warping or restoration work, I bel ieve that it has not been touched(repaired/ items replaced) since the day it was made. Both the vesta case and inkwell are embossed as such on the lids and have brass catches that release the lids. The vesta case has a socket for holding a wax vesta, a rough plate that is hinged for striking the matches and storage underneath. The inkwell has a glass bottle that is held in place with a brass rim and under the lid is the stopper to seal the bottle. The pen tray is lined in blue watermarked silk and all pieces are edged in gold. The box would have sat in a larger box or in a writing slope and a it is in absolute excellent condition. Twin thin brass lines inside this on top and front giving this box that extra touch of quality. Brass cartouche to top with no engraving and another fine brass line surrounds it. Up for auction is a beautiful Antique Lap Desk. This Lap desk was inscribed and presented to the Reverend Charles Snedden(Born Aug 28. 1871-Died Dec 8, 1935) on the occasion of his leaving Thrumeter, I believe a town in South Wales, Australia) in 1905 and coming to the United States. You can go on GOOGLE and find out a lot about his history. I believe the wood is either Walnut or Rosewood. It has Brass inlays and the leather writing surface is super Gilt Tooled. The interior looks like Mahogany but I do not know a lot about wood. The desk is in good condition considering it is 110 years old. There is a crack inside on the bottom. There is felt on the bottom that is partially missing but I left it as is. There may be a hallmark underneath I do not know. You can check out the pictures. There are Two Hidden compartments in the Desk that can ... morebe used to hide important items. This Desk is truly a beautiful piece of History. Hi.I have for sale a lovely small writing slope that dates to around 1910.This is a nice small slope that has a walnut veneer and a Tunbridge boxwood border.There is a brass top plate and escutcheon plate.Inside is an oxblood leather cover,pen lid and the correct glass inkwell.The leather has replaced a much earlier covering but it gives the box a lift.The box measures 12 inches wide x 9 inches deep x 5 inches high.generally the box is in very nice condition but there are some minor niggles.The gold pattern border has some missing sections and these have been coloured in gold.There is a little bit of damage on the front top edge which has resulted in a small line about 5 inches wide on both sides.This damage is also repeated on the opposite back left rear edge but the box is still strong.The key does have a bit of play inside the lock but ... moreit works perfectly fine.This is a nice small slope and i am only starting this at £5. Antique Wood Roll Top Lap Desk, Travel Writing Slope Box w Drawer, Nice Patina
Beautiful Antique Roll Top Lap Desk. Writing Slope Up for your consideration is this truly beautiful antique lap desk. Made of wood. I am uncertain of the actual type of wood but has nice graining. This is just great in every way, it is intact and very secure when completely shut and when you pull out the drawer at the front, it will open the roll top portion in the back to expose a three section area inside. Once the roll top is open, you can unfold the desk portion which flips open from back to front and leans securely on the open drawer for stability, the desk has a purple or a worn blue felt top with brass hinges. Again, the wood is very nice inside and out, the drawer opens nicely as does the roll top portion. There is a large transfer decoration on the wood desk top, there is also the very slight remains of one on the top of the roll ... moretop framed area. There are only two areas with minor problems, first is the lower right corner which is missing a small corner wood piece, and the upper left corner of the framing of the roll top where there is also a small piece of wood missing; otherwise, working very well and looking very good. There is a brass lock in place for the drawer but no key and the hinges are brass as well and seem to be original. It measures 12 1/8" wide, 9 1/4" deep, 5 1/2" tall. It is very clean, no major breaks, cracks, or discoloration. Nice patina, nice scroll design in wood at the top roll top framing, transfer decoration is wearing and almost gone on the top portion, and of course, the two missing pieces mentioned earlier. A very smart looking Antique Writing Slope or Writing Box. The writing slope is made with a lovely dark wood. Possibly Coromandel or some other African hardwood. The writing box also has a mother of pearl lock and plaque to top. The writing slope is in fair condition. Exterior is in good condition with some small loss to the Veneer at the back(see photos) The interior has lost its slope fitting which could probably be restored if required. Or the box could be used as a trinket or storage box instead. The tray for the ink. Pens etc has lost one wooden strut so the pen tray is not secure. The interior is in a nice, clean condition. 14” X 9” X 6” 7 lb. Interesting rosewood writing box/slope. It has typical Georgian drop handles and Georgian escutcheon and key plate. But the diamond pattern of the brass inlay is unusual. Haven’t seen that before. There is a drawer on the side with a replacement brass locking pin. Replacement blue velvet writing surface, new green burlap on the bottom. There is a repair at the right front corner of the top, and a couple of very small repairs at the bottom. Considering its age, it’s in pretty good shape over-all. These photographs are very grainy and reflect every speck of dust. Box is much more attractive than the pictures. Relatively low starting price for a fancy box of this period. The exterior features figured walnut veneer with decorative marquetry highlights on the top and front. There are also Mother-of-Pearl inlays at the top center. And around the keyway. This English Victorian Rosewood sloped writing lap desk features an inlaid geometric design at the center with varying shades of the wood. Closed. It measures 13”W x 9-½”L. Both of the top lids are hinged on both sides and the lower one opens to reveal the sloped velvet lined writing surface. The top part of the writing surface opens to a large storage compartment. The back of the box has a curved top and reveals three compartments. The condition overall is excellent with minor wear to the paint on one of the base corners. There is no key but there is one small glass ink bottle with a metal cap and a metal cap with a missing inkwell. It has brass bands around the outside of the writing slope. Once the slope opens, you can see that it has a felt covered writing area and each of the areas lift up and there are compartments underneath. On one side the fabric has torn so the slope comes completely out vs. the other side where the fabric is in tact and when you lift up on the slope it hinges over. Then, at the top, there's a little area where you can put your pens and things. There's a little try in there that comes out. The box has a brass lock but we don't have the key. And on the lower slope. There's a little brass retainer button. This is shown in the third to the last picture. I have never had or seen an elm slope. This slope could possibly be unique as even searching the internet i can not find another elm wood slope anywhere. A very rare item and probably one of the rarest wood slopes i know of. Elm wood is a beautiful wood with one of the most distinguishable and prettiest grain patterns out there. This slope is very well crafted. Is strong and has a very vibrant grain as can be seen especially on the front and top of the slope(1st and 2nd pics) The slope has been artistically carved around the top. Front and side boarder. The inside of the slope is lined with deep royal blue leather and is in fine condition. the interior wood ... morehas a symmetrical feathered grain which looks like rosewood. The inside and outside of this slope have has no expense or expertise in craft spared. Pictures really do not do this slope justice. In good condition with some slight markings commensurate with age. Has a slight watermark on the outside top which i have not attempted to remove but can be done with relative ease and cheaply by restorers. The slope is missing the pen tray in the inside front. Victorian Traveling Lap Desk Writing Slope Stationary Box. Original finish with fabric lined and painted interior. The chamfered edge of the lid is banded in ebony and inlaid with pierced white brass or nickel plated brass rectangles. The center of the lid has an inset plate that is monogrammed M C. A second plate on the front edge of the lid is not engraved. The original glass ink bottles are present. Their metal lids have cork stoppers. CONDITION: Very nice. Obviously well cared for with signs of use and age. The lid has shrinkage cracks, not gaping but there, with assorted scratches, none new. One corner is bumped below the banding. The lock is present, we do not have the key so it is untested. The lock escutcheon is missing. The interior fabric has faded and is fraying along its edges. As there are some glue smears on the surrounding ... morewood it must have been reglued at some point. I wondered whether the white interior paint was original, as it's a single coat and worn spots reveal unfinished wood beneath it, I believe it to be original. The hinges work as does the catch for the storage space within the lid. That catch is a little tricky to line up. The ink bottles have no chips and the lids seal tightly. There are tiny bits of cork within the bottles. The underside of the box is covered in black paper and has worn spots. DIMENSIONS: 13" X 8 3/4" X 5 1/8" tall. A good sized. This auction is for a gorgeous antique lap desk which features ... morea secret compartment and a stand where you can set it if you happen to be using it at home. We estimate that this is from the mid 19th century. The box opens up to create a flat writing space which is covered with gilt trimmed leather and some little compartments. The writing surface lifts up to reveal more storage on both sides. If you know the secret of the box. You can make a panel pop out which reveals two small secret drawers. It is obvious that the upper compartment with the secret release has been reworked at some point in the past, and as a result there are some small pieces of wood and a metal band(spring? that go into that compartment to keep it functioning properly. The stand is an interesting addition to the lap desk. It is open when the desk is not present, and features a little pull out tray on two sides. The desk is made with a wood veneer and brass inlaid hardware. You can see that there is some veneer separating in one place, a crack on the front, and a crack in the wood on the bottom of one compartment as well as some assorted minor nicks and chips as you often see with things that have survived for over 160 yea

It has a train line Box wood banding and edge in Ebony. The sides and back are in Ebony. C.1850 in date approx. The top lifts up to reveal a writing and storage area's. The inside is in rich Coromandel and Ebony and has a replaced new green leather with a gold decorative boarder. Inner flap lifts up for storage of papers etc. Inside also contains a pair of inkwell pot's with screw off lid's one for black the other for red ink. Lovely Quality Victorian Rosewood & Satinwood Lined Writing Slope c.1870
Up for auction is this wonderful Writing Slope or Lap Desk. Veneered in Rosewood with a Satinwood interior. The Sriting slope is in Wonderful condition with a mother of pearl inlay to the top of the item. The veneers are superb, with excellent strong figured grains with only a few minor pieces missing as shown in pictures. The veneer is very thick. Lock is present(no key) and hinges are very good and clean, nice and strong. The escutcheon is missing however this is easily replaced. The quality of this peice is simply amazing. Rosewood was seen as an expensive and exotic wood, and to line the slope in Satinwood shows the quality. It has a lovey deep patina, and has simply been cleaned, oiled and then given a layer of polish and wax to bring it back to life. The Satinwood lined interior of the writing slope is in good condition with the original ... moreleather writing slope present with a split along the fold which is normal for the age. It has the pen tray as shown(small slither of veneer off this) the two original bottles are present. Although both are missing the rims and only one of the tops are present. Two small pieces of veneer are missing from the interior as shown in pictures. To be honest. I am being hypercritical of this wonderful writing slope, which is in very good condition considering it is over a 100 years old. Its great to see such a quality one, that hasnt been over restored or tarted up. The writing slope is 36cm wide x 23.25 deep and 13.5cm high approx. Please note this is heavy. ENGLISH made burr Walnut writing slope lap desk from the victorian era approx 1860-1880.lots of inlay. It is in fantastic condition and ready to use. It has had its leather writing surface replaced at some point in its life. Looks good. There have been repairs done in bits on the sides of box.nothing terribly bad and not terribly noticeable. felt on bottom has been replaced. The ink well comparment on one side has dividers and due to a bit of wood shrinkage. They will fall but they stay put if you put them in place and set the lap desk somewhere.the hidden comparment is missing the long piece of wood that has the trigger mechanism on it to hide the 3 drawers.it doesnt take away from the charm or beauty of it.one tiny drawer knob is missing.over all, its in great usable, sturdy condition.ready to be used to write your letters.i have 3 and ... moream keeping two.hard to let one go but i dont write enough letters to justify keeping 3. Up for bidding is a beautiful Vintage Wooden Sloped Lift Green Slate Top Document Secretary Writing Desk with Drawer. This well made classic desk top cabinet has great details including an inset pen or pencil groove, metal hinges and drawer pulls. A flush mounted green slate(I think) inset with dove tail joints on the drawer. I believe the wood to be walnut. A r ed velvet lining appears to have been added to the inside along with utensil racks and was likely used for silverware storage. This could be removed if desired. I am not sure if this is an original or reproduction but it is high quality. There is no makers mark but the numbers 7176 are visible on two boards on the bottom. Antique Tunbridgeware Inlaid Writing Slope Box with Original Ink Bottle
Beautiful tunbridgeware writing slope/box with original ink bottle. The box is covered with a walnut veneer and zig-zag banding along the front and top in a variety of woods. It opens to a writing surface covered in the original red velvet and includes a glass ink bottle with a brass cap. The lock is intact and works and the key is included. It is approximately 10" x 81/2" x 4" It is in great antique condition with only a few"issues" On the exterior. There is a shrinkage crack along one back corner and side and a small piece of veneer is missing on the other back corner. There is a tiny bit of missing veneer on one front corner. The top has a slight warp in it so there is small gap on one side. The box does shut and latch, but needs some"encouragement" because of slight shrinkage. All of this is very typical ... moreof these types of boxes. The interior is in good shape but there is a crack on one side of the writing surface. But the inlaid banding is intact and the finish is nice given the age. Overall, it is a very nice writing slope which looks wonderful displayed either open or closed! An Antique Victorian Rosewood Writing Slope Cormack Brothers with Secret Drawer
8577 Writing Slope Description A Victorian writing slope in a dark rosewood veneer. It was made by Cormack Brothers of London around 1870 and has their name plate to the interior. The slope has been re-fitted with a felt writing surface and it has two cut glass inkwells which may well be the orginals. The slope has a hidden section under the inkwells and pen tray. This is accessed by pulling up the leftmost inkwell divider and causes a panel to spring off revealing two small drawers. The box has a brass top plate which is not engraved and a brass escutcheon. Comes with key and tassle but the lock is frozen. The exterior is polished to a satin finish and the deep toned wood is nicely grained as you can see in the images. Condition Split in wood to top. Further minor fine split lines in veneer. Writing surface to interior replaced. Some age ... morerelated wear but exterior wood generally good and polished to a satin finish. Wear and aging to inkwells one with dent to lid. Comes with key and tassle, but lock is non functional. Lid stays slightly ajar when closed. Antique Wood Slope Writing Box With Original Key Pearl Inlay
Here is an antique wood slope writing box. This box is not in the greatest shape and would make a nice little restoration project for somebody or if you just like collecting these kinds of boxes. It measures about 11 3/4" wide. 4 3/4" tall and 8 7/8" deep. It has a decorative oval pearl inlay disc on the top and again for the keyhole. The slant writing board seems to fit fine and latch into the lid as it should for writing. The other piece of writing board looks like it got pushed down into the bottom and is wedged and suffered a split or break as a result. Someone will need to find a way to carefully lift this piece back so it can rest on the side ledges. It has a lift out pen tray and two little side compartments. It actually still has the original key and the lock does work as it should. The hinges are coming loose, so some ... morework would need to be done there. There is a split on the top of lid as shown. Some splitting near the back top corner and a split along the bottom. It will need some overall cleaning to the outside surface. I hope there is someone out there willing to salvage this neat item. 1815-1830 three-fold rosewood brass-inlaid military campaign writing box/slope
16 ¼” X 10” X 6 ¾” 10 lb. 10 oz. Rosewood. Brass-inlaid military campaign writing box/slope. Three-fold boxes are much scarcer than two-fold boxes. Because fewer of them were made, due to the cost of making them. Boxes with their edges covered with heavy-weight brass right-angle strips were the best made, and clearly intended for rough usage in the field. This box dates to between 1815 and 1830. The outside veneer is in excellent condition. Except for a shrinkage crack on the top, which has been filled in with a strip of mahogany. A couple of small cracks in the bottom of the back panel. As with all boxes 200 and more years old, there has been shrinkage to the wood, probably about a quarter of an inch on the top, which always shrinks the most. As a result, the front of the top has been pulled back about 1/8” and the keep would not ... morego into the lock. The keep has been removed so that the top can come down completely, and the brass keep and its screws are included, should the buyer wish to reinstall it. A piece of veneer has been glued to the space where the keep was screwed. An excellent working secret compartment with two drawers and an interesting manner of hiding access to the release mechanism. New quality baize on the writing surfaces. New green burlap on the bottom. Rocker pen tray. Top hinges may be replacements. These boxes were originally waxed, not varnished. The present box has coats of tung oil to preserve the moisture that is still left in the wood. A couple of very small bits of trim inside are missing. Boxes like these today can go for $2.500 in fine antique stores. You won’t see a box like this in its fine condition offered on eBay for less than $1,200. Few boxes are of better quality than this one. I can’t remember the last time a box in this shape was offered on eBay for such a low price. superb antique writing slope mahogany victorian 1800s inkwell box
A superb antique writing slope made from mahogany wood. Inside the slope is covered with a black leather type cover with a gold gilt tooled edge design. The slopes lift easily to reveal spaces for papers inside. The original inkwell is in the box and is made from a heavy silver metal. The writing slope closes together nicely. However there is no key. On the outside the box has brass inserts and escutcheons. The veneer is in good condition with a few light scratches and a small chip to the top left corner. The underside of the box has a split due to the age of the wood, this is about 1mm wide and is covered in green felting. Overall in very good condition for its age. width = 29.7cm. Dated circa 1865. It is a fantastically crafted high end slope this that is very strong/sturdy and has a strong but elegant look to it. With some wonderful looking and effective brass bounding especially on the corners. The box is obviously an expensive and sought after/collectable slope that comprises of 2 secret drawers that hide behind a releasable section. This section release works well and the drawers are flush. It comes with what looks like the original key and the lock and key work well. The condition and craft of this slope as mentioned really is phenomenal. The green baize skiver is recent of ... morecourse. The burr wood in this slope really is fantastic and as can be seen from the pictures especially the side and the top of the slope(6th. 7th& 10th picture) looks like it is cut from the entire trunk of the burr. Some wonderful colouration to this cut of burr walnut. Has a great luster and patina to it. Has some aged markings as can be seen in the last picture(10th picture) but these give it character and are commensurate with age of course. The brass is bright but still has a slight tarnish to it. All brass bounding is firm and strong and sits flush as does the keyhole and top escutcheon. The pen tray is present. A magnificent. It is in remarkably nice condition considering its age and has a working lock with key. Externally the beautiful walnut veneer is in nice condition and a lovely colour. Which contrasts nicely with the brass inlay. The is some veneer missing- mainly on one side and some dings/marks(mainly on the top) but nothing to serious or obvious- please examine the pictures. Antique Oriental Lacquered Writing Slope– Hand Painted. Description For auction is a beautiful antique oriental lacquered writing slope/ lap desk. This beautiful lacquered writing slope opens to reveal a green felt writing slope and a small rectangular compartment at the head of the writing slope. The rectangular compartment is spilt into 6 smaller compartments three of which have lids. The top half of the felt slope also opens to reveal a hidden area. There is a narrow drawer at the front of the writing slope. The whole piece is lacquered and decorated with hand painted flowers. Birds and foliage in the oriental style which is highlighted with a gold paint. It measures approx. 32cm in length. Approx. 12cm in hight at its tallest and approx. 14cm in width when closed. When open the writing slope measures 50cm in width. On the whole this piece ... moreis in good antique condition. The wood is solid and all the accessories are in place. The top felt board is missing its cloth hinges and as such the board feels loose when using the compartment underneath. There is fading to the hand painted decoration especially to the outside of the box, inside the paint work is still clean and crisp. There is chipping to the lacquered surface at the corners, base and edges of the writing slope from use and storage. There is also some small areas of chipping to the lid of the writing slope.
