Primitive Wooden Butter Paddles. They measure 8.5 inches long and the working part is 2.75 inches wide. These have a great patina and look and feel like they were once an important part of someones kitchen. Here is how they were used- I had to look it up. So I thought I would share) All the buttermilk separated from the butterfat had to be rinsed out. This would improve texture and flavor. And also help the butter keep well, since milk turns rancid more quickly than fat alone. Salt was usually mixed in at this stage- for flavor and preservation. The rinsing could be done simply by washing in water. Followed by draining. Salting and working or"kneading" the butter with a pair of wooden butter hands. Or with bare hands. Please see our photos. I purchased this new on a trip to Edinburgh Castle in 1983 from a jewelers in PRINCES STREET. I had just purchased a genuine item with hidden games drawer at auction. But thought the decanters were a little grubby. I had planned to use the decanters from this set.but they are slightly too big! Best laid plans of mice and men.anyway.left unused in a cupboard for 30 years! The unusual thing on this set is the stoppers are flat topped and round. Most sets have either the round BALL type or square flat topped. I have tried to show the brilliant cut to the stopper tops. The cut on the decanters is classic Edinburgh design. These are hand made so all 3 are slightly different. There are no chips ... moreor marks on the decanters. And only one has ever been used. The brass work needs a good polish. Woodenware/ Antique-Oriental-Chinese Pyramid Grain Measure Scale Vessel - SHENG
Until recently I have been ignorant as to origin and intention of this wooden pyramid shaped container. I knew it had a certain age from the wear on the bottom and that the 4 crescent shaped holes on the base must have been used for carrying and that whatever it contained was restricted from spillage by it's narrowing top and it appeared never to have had a lid. The top edges and top corners have been re-enforced with crude fashioned iron bands while the wooden corners are beautifully dove tailed, Made in a solid dark wood with a beautiful grain which I cannot speculate as to the type. It has an original patina and and only one bottom corner has been slightly damaged- many years ago. Antique 19th to early 20th Century Chinese wooden grain measure called"Sheng" 升) The vessel is in pyramid shape and made of heavy hard wood re-enforced with metal sheet on the corners and ridges with traditional flat head iron nails. It's heavily built and made to last. This item is not a souvenir or reproduction. It an authentic piece that has been used. As the heavy wear on the bottom beams can tell. Ever since the agriculture was invented. There has had a need to measure grains. Later. on when trade developed, the measure became even more important. It's said the grain measure was among one of things the first emperor Qin Shihuangdi-builder of the Great Wall- ordered to be standardized, in about 220 B.C. Though few are sure of the date of its exact origin, the pyramid shaped grain measure was once commonly used in China until modern scales took over. Even today in some rural markets it's still used.
