This listing is for an old wooden shipping crate. It is marked on the top and the front: 50 LB. 7/8 X 8 HERCULES Reg. U.S. Pat. Off. TAMPTITE GELATIN EXTRA 40% STRENGTH" There are nice graphics on each end of the man. Hercules. It is also marked on the top: High Explosives; These explosives were inspected and have been? good condition before they were packed. Keep? cool. Dry, well ventilated? It is marked on the back: I.C.C. 14; HERCULES POWDER; HIGH EXPLOSIVES DANGEROUS" Also marked on each end: HERCULES POWDER REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. Crate measures 18.5" x 11.5" x 7.5" The shipping crate needs to be cleaned. But it is in very good used, vintage condition. It is solid. The top piece that is not attached to the box was nailed on top of the front piece when we purchased it. We pulled the nails out of it when we realized ... morethat it was the missing top piece. That piece is slightly bowed and has about a 4" crack. We will probably nail it back on w hen we ship it to the buyer. Welcome to WG Antiques Up for bid is a vintage R.F. Johnston Paint Co. wooden shipping crate. The crate is in good.Sturdy condition. It measures 19 1/8" L x 12 3/8" H x 13" W. The R.F. Johnston Co. hails from Cincinnati Ohio.The lettering on the crate is faded. The one side is very hard to see the lettering. There is damage to the top edges. More than likely from where they nailed the lid on it and pried it off. The crate does not have the lid.The crate has indented handles. The one handle has two nails protruding down. These can more than likely be pounded up and pulled out. The crate has scuffs from normal use.This is a nice crate to add to any paint collection and to display and use for storage. RARE ANTIQUE VINTAGE PROHIBITION ERA SEAGRAMS V.O. WHISKY WOODEN SHIPPING CRATE
Here’s a little history of the Seagram company used to date this crate; In 1857. A distillery was founded in Waterloo, Ontario. Joseph E. Seagram became a partner in 1869 and sole owner in 1883, and the company became known as Joseph E. Seagram& Sons. One of the most well-known whiskies produced at the Waterloo plant was Seagram's"V.O. In 1913. Joseph E. Seagram and Sons. Limited released this new brand of whisky to celebrate the marriage of Joseph Seagram's son Thomas. In 1928. A few years after the death of Joseph E. Seagram(1919) the Distillers Corporation acquired Joseph E. Seagram& Sons, and took over the Seagram name. The Distillers Corp. Ltd. was owned by Samuel Bronfman. Based on the company name stamped on the side of this crate it appears to have been made and used sometime between 1913 and 1928. The prohibition ... moreperiod lasted from 1920-1933. Another interesting detail about this crate is the fact that it was used in 1951 to ship something through the US mail from a US Army base in New York state to someone in Long Beach Ca. Since the Joseph E. Seagram and Sons. Limited name was used on the V.O. boxes during 8 years of the Prohibition period(1920-1928) and the fact that the box had been in New York which is very close to the distillery it is highly likely that this case contained whiskey smuggled into the U.S. during prohibition.
