The man is holding a bolas. Three weighted balls at the ends of ropes which are fastened together in the middle. Bolas were used by the Argentine Gaucho much like the lariat used by North American cowboys. The weapon( is thought to have been used by Native Americans on the South American Pampas whose prey was a species of flight-less birds. When thrown correctly, the bolas entangled the legs so the animal would fall and/or be unable to run. This figure may be that of a Gaucho; he is wearing the loose fitting pants that are gathered in just below the knee at the top of the boots, but I don't recognize the hat. It is known that ... morebolas were used formerly by other peoples, mainly in the Americas including as far north as Eskimos, which would indicate a possible oriental origin. CIRCA 1860's U. S. CIVIL WAR FOLK ART PAINTED WOOD CARVING OF A ZOUAVE SOLDIER
Original folk art hand carved& hand painted figure of a Civil War Zouave soldier. We believe that this carving dates circa 1860's& is from the American Civil War era. All surfaces of the wood& the paint show a lovely patina from age. This fascinating& well done folk art wood carving turned up in an estate in the Doylestown. Pa. area. Numerous other items that came out of the estate were from the Civil War period. It is thought that this carving was made by a soldier from Pennsylvania that fought in the Civil War. We have never seen another carving like this one& we have not, as of yet, been able to pin this carving to a specific maker. Perhaps with the right research it could be pinned to a specific carver. This figure of a Zouave soldier is quite skillfully carved. He retains lots of his entirely original multi-colored ... morepaint. The paint is quite rich& retains a lovely patina from age. Many years ago he got chips to his nose. Goatee, mustache. These chipped areas now have much natural patina from age& present nicely with the rest of the surfaces on the figure. There is some wear to the wood on his backpack. The back foot is partially missing, the front foot has some chips, one arm is entirely missing. The figure stands 8 1/2 inches tall not counting the base. The wooden base is a modern addition added so that the figure would stand up. The base measures 2 7/8 inches long by 2 inches wide by 3/4 inch tall. With the base the figure stands at a total of approximately 9 1/4 inches tall. This figure is entirely original in all respects. There are no repairs. No replacements, all of the paint on the figure is entirely original. The lovely patina& the precise condition can be seen in the accompanying photos. While there are no maker's marks or identifying information on the item. It was removed from a chest of vintage ashtrays, matchbooks and military curios dating from early 1940s to late 1950s. The best guess that I can make is that this was hand carved folk art of a German soldier. The lack of identifying information is why the price is fairly low.

Walnut stain, it is difficult to identify what species of wood this large wood panel is carved from. It is definitely a hardwood ... morewith a tight grain. The panel measures 21 ¾ inches wide by 30 ½ inches tall by 1 ¼ inches thick. Including the carving. The back panel is actually made from three boards and the horse& rider were carved separately and then applied. You can see on the right hand edge that part of the horse's hoof is missing. There also is tip of a leaf missing from the bottom. There is one more problem that I will try to explain; two of the backboards are no longer held together. The carving itself is actually holding the two pieces together. This in no way effects displaying or use of this antique hand carved plaque. Aside from some assorted rubs and light scratches. The rest of this hand carved Roman solider and horse is perfect with no restorations. We are listing this circa-1900 architectural carved plaque without any reserve and we guarantee 100% that the high bidder will be totally satisfied with its age. Vintage Wood Saluting Soldier Bank-Japan
What a cute way to save coins.When you put the coin in the slot. Pull up on the chimney rod and he salutes.Then he stands guard on your money. The bottom slides to the side to retrieve your coins if you need them.I think he is new, but some wear on the box as you can see from the pictures so I'm selling as used. Made in Japan and numbered 5528.Inspection of the box tells me he's really old but not sure how old.Great decoration and conversation piece.Thanks for looking.

Up for auction is a Vintage Wood Toy Soldier Bobble Head Bank by Nasco Japan with key. It is all wood except for the spring and the bottom where you unlock it. The original key is attached with a string around one of its' arms. It is 11 1/2 inches high and 5 inches wide. The arms are moveable. On the back there is a sticker which reads MASTERPIECES IN WOOD NASCO. It is in good condition. There is a small crack right above his nose and a small chip on the back of his right arm. Soldier's Pocket Dice. Civil War era or earlier.Carved wood box. Gambler's item
Four tiny dice in a great old sliding top box. Just the sort of item a soldier would have had tucked in a pocket or haversack for a quick game. Each dice is about ¼ inch square and very primitive with the spots obviously hand drilled and colored with black and red ink or perhaps wax. Box is 1½ inches long and ½ inch wide and hand carved or made from a single piece of wood. Great little item. THANKS FOR LOOKING AND GOOD LUCK.

For sale is an antique Black Forest Wood Carving. From around 1859 to the early 1960's. The carving is of 2 men hugging or dancing. And obviously drinking.One has a stein. What makes this a very rare is the man on the right. Has military clothing. He is wearing A French Zouave. Hat and leather chap's or Gaiter's. These were uniform. Parts worn during the Franco Austrian War of 1859. Zuave's were French soldier's sent to Austria. After the war the Zouave Soldier's were stationed at Versallies. They are standing over an Edelweiss flower. Austria's national flower.This makes me think that it's a carving. Representing a Peace Treaty Celebration. You can see a spot of white where the flowers were painted. The entire West side of the Black Forest Region is the. French boarder. Some extra homework told me the leather ... morechap's. Or gaiters were only made of leather in the early years. This could be seen as Trench Art or a celebration of. Armistice or treaty. I do not know if it was mounted to. Some thing.It is a flat back with no mounting holes or screws. I know this is lot of information but it dates this carving. To circa 1859.And the subject is a Zouave Soldier. Has a crack at the bottom center through the chap. To the center. It is not on top or above the arms. A chip on the swirl on the left bottom. There are no makers marks. Any carving marked. Is not a true vintage Black Forest piece.
