Wear, scratches and chips throughout, stand hole in the bottom of leg Additional Information: A standing figure with large head identified as an Urhobo figure from Nigeria at a crossroads of cultural and artistic interactions between various peoples. This figure is shown in a common Urhobo stance seen in other larger Urhobo sculpted ancestral figures known as edjo. The straightforward position of this figure with the lower arms bent at right angles with a slightly opened mouth all topped by a European style hat. The figure shows age and long use through the timeless surface with signs of wear throughout the body. Liittle is known about objects of this type. Figures among the Urhobo. A part from the fact that among the Urhobo such figures were mainly used as persomal shrine(Iphri) which uses are similar to those of the Ikenga Shrine figures from the Igbo. Notwithstanding this figure is a finely carved figure showing the Urhobo style of figural representation. It would be a good addition to any collection. The Kota have produced large quantity of statues of ancestors with the diamond-shaped lower part called mbulu-ngulu; these rather two-dimensional sculptures are in wood; symbolic metals were applied to the upper part in strips or sheets to add power. Copper in particular was identified with longevity and power. These statues stood guard in cylindrical bark boxes. On baskets or bundles called bwete that contained the skulls and bones of important ancestors. Bound into a packet and lashed to the base of a carved figure. The bones formed a stable base that allowed the image to stand more or less upright. Thanks to the diversity of the groups, scattered over a vast area, a great variety of different styles of figures has developed, some of them endogenous and some influenced by neighboring styles. Kota figures represent an extremely stylized human body. Reduced to shoulders and“arms, in emptied lozenge shape, surmounted by a large face framed by an ample coiffure with hanging tresses. The face, always oval, may be concave(female) convex(male) or concave-convex, with a forehead in quarter-sphere(also male) The reliquaries were kept outside the homes, in huts at the edge of the village. Only the initiates of the lineage had access to this sacred place. At the time of initiation in the reliquary cult, the clans would meet to perform communal rituals; each clan’s chief would dance holding the reliquary. Some reliquaries featured a large figure representing the lineage founder along with some smaller figures representing his successors. From the modern day Republic of the Congo down through northern Angola. Known for their many art forms, as well as filed, sharpened teeth among Kongo women, the Kongo are a large and diverse ethnic group, consisting of a number of smaller subgroups. Art and sculpture is made for a wide variety of reasons among these people. Unique to the Kongo's region are the'nkisi, carvings considered extremely powerful by the people, and even by British colonialists who ordered them destroyed when found, fearing that they could be an effective resistance to the colonization of Africa. These"fetishes" are adorned with nails, or blades of metal, and are the only figures in African art embellished in this way. Nkisis aside, however, the Kongo produce many different styles of art, each of which have gained substantial attention and notoriety from collectors. The maternity figure itself is an extremely important form of art produced throughout much of the African continent. And a form of this figure can be found in the majority of art producing ethnic groups. Some are rendered as part animal, some strictly human. Some are produced as clear representations, some are highly abstract. They are carved from wood and cast in metal. To the African woman, motherhood is the single most important role in life. This beautiful feminine maternity figure displays traditional Kongo styling. Especially in the facial features. The woman is seated cross-legged, cradling her infant gently above her lap. Her breasts are heavily marked with scarification marks, and her coiffure is tall and rounded, a common style in Kongo sculpture. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. African WOOD carving statue - Folk Art - Old Bust with head-dress- wooden figure
I inherited this from my dad and know very little about it. A unique face and head-dress on a delicate neck and sturdy base! I can see that it is carved wood(don't know what kind) and is stained a dark color. It has an African style face and head-dress. I don't know if it was made in Africa. It looks old because it shows some wear and tear like rubbed areas and what seems to be 2 chips off back edge of the head-dress. I'm not sure if this could have been there when it was made. I think this would look real nice if it were refinished. Of course the wear it shows does add a special antique look. There does seem to be a hairline crack down the side of the nose to the chin and up the forehead.see photos) This could have been there too from the wood itself. Mporo beads form a vertical row down the necklace's center. Samburu women began acquiring mporo beads(Venetian glass. Wound white-hearts) in the late nineteenth century, mostly from Somali and Arab traders. The necklace has changed over time with some much more contemporary today and made of doum palm fibers. Occasional giraffe hairs, which are strung through layers of mporo beads. Multiple layers of beaded fibers give the necklace its structure and fullness. Ideally. A Samburu woman is given her mporo necklace as a gift from her mother(with additional mporo beads from other female kin and friends) at her marriage. It is a necessary component of the bride's adornment in the marriage ceremony. Since poverty has forced so many women to sell their beads to local. Here is a vintage. Somewhat large, Hand-Carved Wooden Poseidon or Neptune Ancient God of the Sea Sculpted Maritime or Masthead type Figure. He is depicted with a crown on his head, is holding a harpoon and shown with a boat hull as his bottom half. He has glass eyes and is gessoed and painted. The paint is a little lighter than some of the photos. It has some scuffs and chips in the paint/ gesso. Made by a now-deceased Santero- Spanish for"saint-maker" who normally made carvings of the Angels and Saints for Catholic churches, but occasionally did carvings of the other"gods" A large hanging hook was added recently to make it easy to display. It measures about 25"high x 7" wide and weighs about 6 lbs. before packaging. This is perfect for any maritime themed room, or man cave or simply as part of your collection ... moreof the Gods! Good used vintage condition; might need some ligh t cleaning. I can see some glue around the drumstick and I don't know if it is original or if the stick came loose at one time and was re-glued. This gorgeous sculpture is that of a partly nude women with elongated arms. Neck, fingers, hands, feet, toes, and body. She is carrying a very detailed basket on her head. The wood looks to be teak however this is only a guess. In Bali fine-grained hardwoods such as teak and strong fruit trees such as jackfruit. Shiny ebony. Tamarind, hibiscus and frangipani are the most popular carving woods. The grain often follows a skin pattern or veins in the arms of the statue. And this carving shows just that. This fantastic hand carved wood kitty cat is very vintage and very cute. It stands 6" tall and is in excellent condition. It looks to be from the 1960s or so and is made of a wood that I cannot identify but it is not a very heavy wood. The wood appears to have been burned to get the dark areas. It has a somewhat shiny finish and may have some sort of varnish on it. It is unmarked as to the maker. Thanks for looking!
