Additional Information: Dogon sculpture has long held a prominent place in collections of African Art as examples of the best that the African sculptor has created. This well used figure with the âchildâ in the back projects maternal assurance and protection. Figures such as this of the seated mother holding a child are commonly called âmaternityâ figures. However this term is slightly misleading as the figure in the back is more than a child and is most probably an adult with attributes of an adult. Sometimes a beard, or shown wearing jewelry or adult dress. What appears to occur, as in this figure, is reference to the âmotherâ representing one of the original founding primordial beings who gave us birth(Nummo among the Dogon) or she could represent a lineage mother or simply represent the concept of life and fertility. Maternity figures serve a number of important symbolic roles but all must meet certain aesthetic requirements of representation and symbolic meaning. The Mossi are today the largest single group living in Burkina Faso. They originated from horsemen who made their way north from present day Ghana during the 1500âs. Mossi are renowned for their masquerades and the use of large superbly sculpted and brightly painted masks and colorful costumes. Among the Mossi elders are highly honored with elaborate funerals and the appearance of masked dancers with masks representing ancestors and various spirits and forces of Nature in dramatic and often vigorous dances. Parts of the fingers are missing along with the backs of the ears. There is some damage to the top and back of the head. Both feet have been nicely repaired a long time ago. Only offered once at this opening bid. Up for auction is an original old primitive. well you tell me and we'll both know. It appears to be some sort of wood vessel of some sort. The top comes off and the inside is somewhat hollowed out. I absolutely LOVE the carvings on this piece! It's flanked with carved figures on both sides that look like colonial men. Even the shape of the piece is clever and it is free standing or you could certainly hang on the wall by the string. And whatever it was used for. It was definitely"used" The wood is rubbed/worn in spots to the point where it's smooth to the touch from use. On the bottom there are tape remnants, maybe from a old auction sticker. Hard to say. Or Wanyamwezi, are the second-largest of over 120 ethnic groups in Tanzania. They live in the northwest central area of the country, between Lake Victoria and Lake Rukwa. The term Nyamwezi is of Swahili origin, and translates as"people of the moon" Historically. There have been five tribal groups, all referring to themselves as Wanyamwezi to outsiders: Kimbu, Konongo, Nyamwezi, Sukuma, and Sumbwa, who were never united. You will receive one antique wood carved elephant that measures 8.5"x9" It has some flaws including. Several chips in the feet, it is missing its tusks, and it has one light spot above his ear and one on its belly. I am not sure what caused the spots or if they are removable. 18th / 19th C. COLONIAL MAN FIGURE CARVED WOOD SCULPTURE VESSEL ~ ANTIQUE
Up for auction is an original old primitive carved wood gem. Not sure what it was used for but at this moment in time. it has become a really great piece of art. In a prior life. It appears that it was some sort of wood vessel. The top comes off and the inside is somewhat hollowed out. I absolutely LOVE the carvings on this piece! It's flanked with carved figures that look like men from the colonial period. Even the shape of the piece is clever and it is free standing or you could certainly hang on the wall by the string. And whatever it was used for. It was definitely"used" The wood is rubbed/worn in spots to the point where it's smooth to the touch from use. NO RESERVE… This auction is for a Japanese Hand Made Musical Wood Puzzle or Trick Box. I purchased the collection all from the same estate. I am going to sell them each in single auctions over the next few weeks a few at a time. I find I do not have the patience or interest in trying to figure most out. This means I really do not know how many moves it takes or what the moves are to open most of these. When I went on line to find out who made each one and the values I did figure out how to open one or two of them. There are NO PAPER INSTRUCTIONS with any of them. All are really handsome workmanship with very fine detail work. If you have an interest you can look at my other auctions to examine each of the boxes I presently have up for auction. So if you are outside the U.S.A. better check with me first on your country. The Box in this auction is a piece called the" Dona Dona" by Shiro Tajima. I don't know what the tune is called that it plays. But it might have something to do with the name of the box. This Puzzle Box is pretty simple although I was not the one to figure it out. To wind the music mechanism you just have to rotate the head around. To make the music box play you pull on each end at the same time. The center of the box opens approx. 1/8 inch which turns the music on. It will stop playing when to push the center back together. I have a yellow pencil pointing at this area in a few of my photos. It would have likely taken me some time to figure this out as you have to pull hard on each end. There is also a secret compartment that I have no idea how to open. In one of my photos I have a yellow paper arrow on the end that has the compartment. This box measures approx. 3 5/8 inch long. 2 1/2 inch wide, and about 2 1/2 inch high at the cow's head. Both sexes wore robes called kalasiris by Herodotus. Material and cut varied over the centuries, though the cloth of choice was always linen. The kalasiris women wore might cover one or both shoulders or be worn with shoulder straps. They covered the breasts most of the time, though there were periods when fashion left them bare. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. here is a hand carved African woman Native Tribal Figure. Carved from what appears to be ebony Wood. solid one piece of wood hand carved. She is standing and holding something. Looks like a jug or gord type container. She stands 7 3/4" tall, very well carved. The bottom of the base is not perfectly flat so she will not stand. Will have to be leveled or propped up or stand against a wall very interesting and unique carving to add to any collection.
